Questions

km
1) The speedometer in your car reads 65 . This is the ...
h
A. average speed of your car
B. instantaneous speed of your car
C. neither of the above

2) If an object is moving, then the magnitude of its ____ cannot be zero.

A. speed
B. velocity
C. acceleration
D. A and B
E. A, B, and C

3) A body in free fall in a vacuum

A. will drop the same distance during each second of its fall.
B. will have the same average speed during each second of its fall.
C. will have a constant velocity during each second of its fall.
D. will not be accelerated during its fall.
E. will have the same acceleration during each second of its fall.

4) Which of the given expressions describes motion with a constant velocity going opposite the
x-axis?
A. 𝑥 = 3 + 2𝑡,
B. 𝑥 = 2𝑡 − 𝑡 2 ,
C. 𝑥 = 4 − 3𝑡,
D. 𝑥 = 5𝑡

5) A ball is thrown horizontally with a speed of 25 m/s from the top of a tower 20 meters high.
Assuming level ground below and negligible air resistance, what will be the magnitude of the
vertical velocity component when the ball hits the ground?
A. 25 m/s
B. 15 m/s
C. 20 m/s
D. 50 m/s
E. 10 m/s
Problems
1. Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant of three displacements having components
(3, 2) m, (-5, 3) m, and (6, 1) m.

2. A bicyclist makes a trip that consists of three parts, each in the same direction (due north)
along a straight road. During the first part, she rides for 22 minutes at an average speed of 7.2
m/s. During the second part, she rides for 36 minutes at an average speed of 5.1 m/s. Finally,
during the third part, she rides for 8.0 minutes at an average speed of 13 m/s. (a) How far has the
bicyclist traveled during the entire trip? (b) What is the average velocity of the bicyclist for the
trip?

3. A train has a length of 92 m and starts from rest with a constant acceleration at time t = 0. At
this instant, a car just reaches the end of the train. The car is moving with a constant velocity. At
a time t = 14 s, the car just reaches the front of the train. Ultimately, however, the train pulls
ahead of the car, and at time t = 28 s, the car is again at the rear of the train. Find the magnitudes
of (a) the car's velocity and (b) the train's acceleration.

4. A woman is reported to have fallen 144 ft from the 17th floor of a building, landing on a metal
ventilator box, which she crushed to a depth of 18 in. She suffered only minor injuries.
Neglecting air resistance, calculate (a) the speed of the woman just before she collided with the
ventilator, (b) her acceleration while in contact with the box, and (c) the time it took to crush the
box.

5. A projectile is fired from the origin O with the initial speed v0 = 100 m/s at an angle θ0 = 53°
from the horizontal. The projectile just passes horizontally above a hill of height H and hits a
point A on the other side, which has a height h and a horizontal distance D, as shown in the
figure. The projectile's time of flight is tf = 12 s. (g = 10 m/s2, sin53° = 0.80, cos53° = 0.60)
(a) Find H, the height of the hill (b) Find the height h and horizontal distance D. (c) Find v, the
projectile's velocity just before it hits the point A. Express v in terms of unit vectors. (d) Find r,
the position vector of the projectile as a function of time.
