1.0 INTRODUCTION

Based on our finding, sensing, monitoring and actuating system are plays a key role
reducing building overall energy consumption. Thus, we propose this case study to develop a
system that can monitor energy consumption inside the building hence reducing building overall
energy consumption. The concepts of energy monitoring system which display real time energy
consumption to consumers are presented using IoT (Internet of Things). This project includes
sensor networks that use modern communication technology to transmit their generated data such
as energy consumption and metering information (voltage, current, power) for effective working
of the system. Besides, using that metering information as state before, the data can be converted
into billing system which will display the total amount of energy usage in real time in form of
Ringgit Malaysia (MYR). Moreover, by developing this system, the consumer also can detect
which devices consume more electricity in electrical bill such as oven to pre-heat the meal. Thus,
as we proposed this case study, it would increase awareness of consumers to use less energy
consumption inside the building by showing the consumers the real time billing of electrical bill
(daily) compared as conventional billing system by TNB on monthly.
2.0 PROBLEM STATEMENT

The development of the social economy, many appliances have been presented in a house or any
building that will use for daily. It comes out a problem that how to manage and control these
increasing various appliances efficiently and conveniently so as to achieve more comfortable,
security and healthy space at home. Nowadays, consumers in Malaysia took social media as
place to express their unsatisfied over the sudden sharp hike in their electricity bills. TNB also
explained that the consumption of the electricity may increase if some devices use high load of
power such as air-conditioners that are not maintained properly. Below show the problem
statement in this case:

 The consumer can’t see the usage of energy by daily because there is no system that can
display energy consumption that need to be paid by them.
 The consumer wants to reduce the cost of electricity used in life by using the effectiveness
energy management technology.
 The consumer wants to know which device or electrical appliances in their house caused
the electrical bill goes high.

In energy consumption requires more innovative solutions to solve this issue. Therefore, from
one innovative solution may help the consumers to use electricity wisely without waste it.
Several methods have been proposed in order for solving this kind of problem such as using
inverter to each appliance. Others have proposed stronger to develop a program that can estimate
the consumption of each appliance. The fast action is needed to maintain and avoid the higher of
bill that need the consumers to pay every month.
3.0 OBJECTIVES

The main objectives for these projects are:

 To design the energy monitoring system that can monitor energy and display the energy
data in term of electricity bill.
 To increase awareness of energy consumption among consumers.
 To identify which equipment, consume more energy inside the building.
 To analyze the monthly energy consumption and make comparison between previous
month.

6.0 RECOMMENDATION

This company consume large amount of energy that need to be monitor. The company
paid large amount of electricity bill for every month. As a solution we propose developing the
energy monitoring system to monitor and analyze the energy data.

Based on our visit to this company, some of their electrical appliances they used can be
divided into two groups which are priority and non-priority. Example of priority is working area
where they have to consume the energy such as light, air conditioning and socket to do their
work and pantry for refrigerator and water cooler and also server room which have air
conditioning act as coolant. While non-priority group, is the area where some or less people used
such as hallway, meeting room and store room.

Thus, we suggest to PESTECH TECHNOLOGY SDN BHD the best location which is
suitable to place the sensing unit. Based on the single line diagram, 20 sensing unit will be place.
Three of them will be place for lighting. Since there are three phase system, 4 will be place on
socket and one for pantry while the rest 12 will be place for each pair air conditioning inside the
building because they used 22 unit of air conditioning.

As a small conclusion, by dividing the sensing unit at different location, the consumer can
detect and analyzing the location where the consumers use most energy. The company can
decide either it is necessary or not to be used and also know the electrical bill they have been
used day by day lastly can bring benefit to consumer from wasting energy and money.

8.0 DISCUSSION

From the case study before, the major problem of PESTECH TECHNOLOGY SDN
BHD was the energy consumption in the building always goes high and the monthly bill around
RM 32K. Due to high monthly electricity bill, the company has to cut the expense in order to
balance the account thus limit the cash flow. Even thought the company has try other method to
prevent wasting energy which they have place sticker “switch off the lamp if not used” and
“switch off the air conditioning if not used”, the effort seems worthless. Thus, the company seek
for our help to solve their problem by developing energy monitoring system where allow reading
of energy consumption from one central point on the measured building.

The system that we develop is energy monitoring system where we place several sensing
units to read the energy data and represent it in term of electrical bill that can be seen by others
employee. The data can be seen on the monitor that we place on the main hall inside the office. By
using this method, we hope that the employee will be aware the energy used and increase
awareness of employee to save the energy thus save company money while making profit. Besides
that, we also can help the company to detect which rooms consume more energy such as pantry
based on the single line diagram as we attach. With this method, the company can detect which
room consume more energy and could bring a better plan to reduce the usage for the room.

Moreover, the system we develop is affordable to implement because it does not required
any wiring in the building and based on our calculation, the ROI can be achieved within 8 years
and below. We believe the system that we develop could save a lot of money besides save energy
consumption and added value to others employee.
9.0 CONCLUSION

In the nutshell, from the innovation we can improve the design and system in the
PESTECH building for the developing the energy monitoring system to monitor and analyze the
energy data. It is can be seen that the energy monitoring system is beneficial for users to further
more understand that the process.

Other than that, users also will be able to monitoring the energy consumption anytime
when users need to know the energy used and also can know the prices of the energy used in the
bill since it available data will stored to user through wireless system. This project will provide a
simple, accurate and useful solution in the form of the energy monitoring system.

Therefore, the energy monitoring system is proposed in the PESTECH building, and a
prototype is built. Although have a prototype, it demonstrated the ease of measurement utilizing
software, and thereby eliminating human errors. The robustness and simplicity of programming
additional features is a great advantage of this energy monitoring system.

It is also an economical choice forward, as the cost implementation is reasonable and

bring more benefit in the future. This show the our project is comes one step to the ultimate
dream of having fully automated energy consumption monitoring system, in which a computer
can provide all the necessary information and incorporate additional features as deemed
necessary by itself.
