Group Counseling Session Lesson Plan

Program Title: Study Skills


Target Group/Audience: College Students
Duration: 30 minutes
Overall Goal: To improve study skills of college aged students

Icebreaker or Attention Grabber:
 Go around group circle introducing ourselves
 Then naming our favorite college class or topic and the reason it is/was our favorite.

Objective: TPWBAT identify effective studying skills to utilize in current routine, with 80% accuracy.
Domain: Cognitive
Generalization: Improving one’s study routine could make learning and preparing for exams a
more positive and beneficial experience.

Discussion on current skills/ strategies
Identification of barriers that interfere with studying
Education and counseling on Study Tips

Objective: TPWBAT identify learning style for effective learning through study strategies, with 80%

Generalization: Determining ones learning style can help identify study strategies that will be most
effective when learning or preparing for an exam

Discussion on strategies for each style (visual, auditory, kinesthetic)

Summary: In summary, studying can be a stressful time for any student trying to learn or understand a new
topic for a class they are enrolled in or an exam they will be taking. Identifying ones learning style and utilizing
strategies can improve the retention of knowledge and provide a positive experience further building effective
study habits for the individual.
Evaluation: The participating members from our group counselling session will return in 2 months for a follow
up session assessing the use of study strategies we talked about in this session and the implementation of their
smart goals. Determining whether they feel they have improved their study habits or need to address different
ways to facilitate their learning.
