This means that renewables, and
solar energy in particular, will play
an increasingly important part in our
endeavour to reduce emissions for a safer
and cleaner future.

What is solar technology?

Solar technology covers two distinct
areas: Solar heating and photovoltaic.

Solar heating: Irradiated light is turned

into heat using solar collectors. The heat
harvested by this process is used to heat
domestic hot water (DHW), to backup
central heating and to heat swimming
pool water.

How does a solar heating system

work? Flat-plate collector principle
All solar heating systems require a Flat-plate
collector that converts the light that collector
strikes it into heat. Flat-plate collectors
are comprised of a transparent cover,
Draw-off points
an absorber, a collector tray and
thermal insulation. Put simply, the
absorber is made from a panel that
absorbs light, it converts the light into
heat and transfers that heat to a heat
transfer medium which flows through
pipework arranged at the back of the
panel. The heat transfer medium is Reheating flow
routed to the cylinder. There it flows
through internal indirect coils (heat and return
exchangers) with a large surface area
and transfers the solar energy to the
water inside the cylinder. As a result,
the heat transfer medium cools down
and returns to the collector, where it is
heated again.

diffusion. Frequency and duration are
crucial values for solar technology.

Diffused radiation
This is created because a part of the
direct radiation is diffused through the

different floating matter, deflecting
the radiation into different directions.
Although diffused radiation is weaker
than its direct form, it can, nevertheless,
be used for generating heat.

Function
The solar heating combi cylinder
SBK 600/150 forms the core of the SBK
system. Inside the cylinder, a 150 l
cylinder for DHW heating is surrounded
by a 450 l buffer cylinder. This DHW
cylinder provides the ideal connection
between DHW heating and central
heating backup. A specially integrated
priority control inside the SOM 8 control
unit ensures optimum energy efficiency
when heating the cylinder.

A patented solar zone heating system

enables the stratification of solar
energy inside the SBK 600/150 combi
cylinder. As a top priority, the upper
cylinder area is heated as soon as
sufficient solar energy is available
(up to the selected temperature). This
makes sufficient hot water available at
any time.
As soon as the selected temperature
has been achieved (or the collector
temperature is inadequate), the
system switches over to the lower
indirect coil. As a result, the cylinder
is thoroughly heated through from
the bottom to the top (until the same
temperature prevails everywhere inside
the cylinder). Should there still be
an adequate amount of solar energy
available, the indirect coils of both
heat exchangers are switched together
(doubling the exchanger area) to
enable extremely rapid heating of the
cylinder to the required temperature.

Technical description
The solar compact installation SOKI SBK-M enables the easy construction of the
solar heating system for DHW heating with central heating backup, and connects
the solar collector array with the solar cylinder SBK 600/150 in an optimum
manner. The three-stage pump used is equipped with a system air vent valve. An
integral non-return valve prevents the undesirable thermo-siphon effect, i.e. the
solar buffer cylinder does not lose its heat when the circulation pump is idle.
Further components that are part of the SOKI SBK-M: Two three-way diverters
valves with integral servomotor, optical flow meter, shut-off valve for filling and
draining, ball shut-off valve downstream of the pump, safety valve 6 bar, pressure
gauge, thermometer for flow and return, PU foam thermal insulation around the
pump.

PIPE PRESSURE DROP DIAGRAM FOR COPPER PIPES

Pressure drop
The pressure drop diagram applies to
the heat transfer medium H-30 L/LS. For
individual pressure drop values, such as
pipe bends, apply a supplement of 30%
to the pipework pressure drop. Where
additional components are installed
into the collector circuit, multiply the
stated pressure drop that refers to
water by a factor of 1.3.

SOM WMZ
The SOM WMZ is a universal heat meter
for solar and conventional heating

precision temperature sensors and the
evaluation of pulses from a flow meter.

Power supply
Provide the power supply of the devices
via an external main isolator. Power is
supplied by a 12 V mains adaptor via
