Many machine components must operate under conditions
that limit the effectiveness of oils and greases.
Such conditions include loads that are so high and/or speeds
that are so slow that a hydro-dynamic lubricating film cannot
be maintained (ftequently the case with plain bearings and
sliding surfaces). In addition adverse environmental condi-
tions may severely reduce the operating life and performance
capabilities of a lubricant to the extent that the machine
component may not function as required.

Up to now lubricating pastes containing metal powders
--.J such as copper, nickel or aluminium have been used in
such cases. Although adding these metal powders enhanced
the load carrying capacity and temperature resistance it is
now recognized that they cause new problems - partly also
relating to health and safety risks.

With copper pastes:

As soon as the carrier oil has evaporated the remaining
metal powder gets into immediate contact with the surfaces
of the component being lubricated, and - owing to the
different voltage potentials of the metals in question -
contact corrosion can occur. Furthermore, copper dust
resulting ftom dry ftiction and wear can contaminate the
environment and drinking water.

With nickel pastes:

At above 200°C the carrier oils of the pastes evaporate
and what remains is pure metal powder which acts as a
separating agent. Nickel powder, however, is known to be
a carcinogenic heavy metal and as such poses severe risks
to human health.

With aluminium pastes:

Although aluminium powder - the key ingredient of such
pastes - is non-poisonous, but it can react at high ftiction
temperatures so violently with the oxygen in the air that a
so-called flash fire can occur.
