5E Lesson Plan

(Graphing Linear Equations)

Teacher: Stephanie M. Turner

Date: November 14- November 20

Subject area/course/grade level: Algebra I, Grade 9

Materials:
❏ Graphing paper
❏ Colored pencils
❏ Rulers
❏ Chromebook or mobile device

Standards (State and ISTE Standards for Students):

13 ) Create equations in two or more variables to represent relationships

between quantities; graph equations on coordinate axes with labels and
scales. [A-CED2]. (ACOS)
1c.) Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves
their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways. (ISTE)

Objectives:
❏ Create equations with two variables (exponential, quadratic and linear).
❏ Graph equations on coordinate axes with labels and scales (exponential,
quadratic, and linear).
❏ Identify an ordered pair and plot it on the coordinate plane.

Differentiation Strategies:
❏ Students will work in small groups and receive one-to-one instruction
from the teacher.
❏ Students will be given worked examples on how to use methods to solve
problems.
❏ Students will use available graphing calculator to graph systems of
equations and linear equations.
❏ Students can use Flipgrid to provide a detailed explanation of each
process orally.
ENGAGEMENT:
Students will watch a brief video that introduces them to linear functions. This video
is used to capture the student’s attention and introduce the content that is to be
covered. Afterwards, allow the students to play the line gem game. This game
teaches you how to draw lines by finding points then drawing a line through them.

EXPLORATION:
Students will investigate the concept of graphing linear equations by play a game
related to graphing lines. The game allows the students to explore, slope, point slope
form, and slope intercept form. By allowing students to explore and record their
progress, the game acts as a pre and post assessment for each of your students.
Students will model and graph linear functions.

EXPLANATION:
In this presentation, we will explore graphing equations without technology. Each
student will use a e-chart graphic organizer for note taking as they follow the
presentation.

ELABORATION:
Group Assignment
Each group will create a Weebly account on www.education.weebly.com to show
different form of linear equations. Each individual has to create a poster (Adobe Spark:
https://spark.adobe.com/edu/ ) that illustrates their part in the project (standard form,
slope, slope intercept form, etc.)The poster should include any vocabulary learned
throughout the lesson as well as the process to graphing linear equations.

EVALUATION:

Each student will complete the performance task to assess their understanding and
evaluate how close they have come to meeting the objectives of the lesson.

Students will play a quick five question Kahoot for an assessment. The Kahoot is in
the survey style so that students will maintain autonomy and you can discuss their
answer choices.
