to pilots. In return, Rabren could set pric-
es for fuel and other services and keep
the profits.
He would replace Claude Hendrick-
son, who served as FBO for four years.
The airport board rescinded his lease in
October after multiple complaints he let
the aviation fuel tank sit empty for long
periods and that he was often not accessi-
ble at the airport.
The city council and county board
of supervisors must ratify the airport
board’s recommendation for Rabren to
officially become the new FBO. Those
decisions are expected in mid-December.
“I was most impressed with his presen-
tation,” said airport board chairman Jeff
Smith, who also serves as
District 4 Lowndes Coun-
ty supervisor. “He’s young
and he looks eager to take
on a bigger challenge. Jar-
ed has experience working
at a very successful airport
(in Starkville), and I’m
hopeful he will bring that Smith
same success and energy
to Columbus-Lowndes.”
Rabren asking for $48,000 in public
money as part of his lease agreement,
which is $8,000 more than what Hen-
drickson was allotted. He also wants to
inspect the fuel tanks before signing the
lease agreement.
He’s requested giving Starkville at
least a month’s notice of his departure be-
fore coming to Columbus.
“Excited is definitely the word for
this,” he told The Dispatch. “It hadn’t
quite hit me yet that the board selected
my proposal. I’m pumped.”
‘Good bones’ but a bad reputation
Rabren, in his proposal to the airport
board, said the local facility has “good
bones” but one big problem.
“The biggest issue here is reputation,”
he said. “It’s hard to get fuel here. It’s
hard to get service here. So pilots have
stopped coming here. I can tell you that
for fact because we’ve been taking a lot
of business from you over in Starkville.”
To stop that, he plans to move to Co-
lumbus and become the face of the local
airport as someone who works there full-
time. He said he would hire part-time la-
bor to help with grass cutting and other
day-to-day operations as needed.
Rabren also plans to sublet the air-

try to hire a staff mechanic. He told the
airport board he had tentatively agreed
with Robert Sorrels of Starkville-based
Circle S Aviation on a sublease for the
hangar from which the company would
provide mechanic services and flight in-
struction. Under that agreement, Circle S
would remain based in Starkville, Rabren
said, and simply expand its operations.
If that agreement falls through,
Rabren said, he would seek another party
for the sublease.
Rabren addressed the need for more,
and updated, hangar space from the
27-plane capacity at Columbus-Lowndes.
He also noted he would support efforts to
extend the now 4,500-foot runway to the
minimum 5,000 feet needed to support jet
traffic, though he said Federal Aviation
Administration grants would almost cer-
tainly have to fund that.
Now, the airport supports mostly
small, single-engine, aircraft.
But speaking with The Dispatch,
Rabren said he sees Columbus-Lowndes,
at least in the short-term, taking the most
advantage of what it already has.
“I would like to see this place become
a general aviation hub,” he said. “Not just
a fuel stop. Something more.”
Part of that will come from rebuilding
a sense of community among pilots who
rent hangar space, he added. To start that
process, he plans to hold a town hall-style
meeting with them after he comes on-
board.
“I want to let these guys tell me what
they need,” Rabren said.
Other proposals
Andy Owens, 54, of Columbus, a long-
time pilot who keeps a plane at the airport,
also presented to the board Thursday.
He asked only for $40,000 annually
from public funds and his presentation fo-
cused almost exclusively on meticulously
keeping the grounds rebuilding pilot mo-
rale.
Russell Sheffield, a Columbus busi-
nessman, submitted a written proposal
asking for $72,000 annually from city/
county sources — which is more than
the entire annual public budget for the
airport.
But when it came time for Sheffield to
present before the board Thursday, he
had left. Instead, he sent an
endorsement text to board

“I’ve never seen that
happen before,” Armstrong told his fellow
board members after he read the text.
A consultant to the process
Rabren also earned the endorsement
of Rick Milburn, who attended Thurs-
day’s meeting to offer his consulting ser-
vices.
Milburn, who now lives in West Point,
has 40 years of aviation management ex-
perience, working in the private sector
for three aviation companies in Illinois —
including in sales, service and appraisals.
The retired Milburn said he wasn’t in-
terested in being FBO but would be will-
ing to contract his consulting services
to either the airport board or the FBO
selected. He sat in on the presentations
Thursday and offered, free of charge, his
opinion of both Owens’ and Rabren’s pro-
posals before the selection vote.
“This is a tough business,” Milburn
told the board. “(Any FBO) is dealing
with a lot of dollars (in expenses) and
very little profit margin. I believe I can
help the airport authority or the FBO
with my expertise.”

According to the LCSO, witnesses said Hubbard had an altercation with one of
the occupants during a family member’s birthday party. Hubbard went outside and
returned with a gun. As occupants tried to block Hubbard from entering, Hubbard
broke out the front window of the home and fired shots. No one was injured in the
shooting.
LCSO said deputies found Hubbard on hiding under a bed at his home at 71
Malone St. in Crawford on Wednesday and placed him under arrest.

New life for a

struggling airport
Pending approval by the Columbus City Council and
the Lowndes County Board of Supervisors, the Colum-
bus-Lowndes Airport will be “under new management,” as
the saying goes.
The airport board unanimously chose Jared Rabren
to serve as the facility’s fixed-based operator (FBO) on
Thursday, and it’s easy to see why.
Rabren checked every box. He is young (25), but well
trained (he holds a degree in aviation management from
Delta State) and experienced (he currently works as oper-
ations manager at Bryan Field in Starkville and previously
worked as an airplane mechanic and lineman at two other
regional airports).
Rabren brought with him an extensive business plan
and was not shy about requesting an additional $8,000 in
funds he said was necessary to implement his plans.
As FBO, Rabren would have an independent contractor
lease for the airport that Columbus and Lowndes Coun-
ty jointly own. He would be responsible for day-to-day
operations and upkeep at the facility, including keeping Mississippi voices

services were available to pilots. In return, Rabren could
set prices for fuel and other services, from which he can
keep the profits.

House said. “It will accom-
modate the increased enroll-
ment, and with the focus be-
ing on STEM now, we really
need to prepare students for
what they’re going to be go-
ing into.”
House added she’s most
excited for the moment stu-
dents enter the building for
the first time.
For McConnall, watching
ACS grow has been a lifelong
journey that has been passed
down to his own children.
“The most satisfying
thing to me, is I have been
able to send my children here
and now my grandchildren,”
McConnall said. “Sustaining
the excellence in education
is the most gratifying. We’re
building a new building. The
school is not really about the
building, it’s really about the
people that are here.”

“I wrote up everything

did not discourage any-
one from reporting abuse,
contradicting other trial
witnesses who said they
had seen her angry and
became too afraid to tell

year of a “roller coaster”
relationship with one of
the twins who she said
had problems controlling

ileges several times and
was taken out of sports
after she threw a book at
one of the counselors —
a punishment which, she
stressed to prosecutors,
was determined by coun-
selors, not by her or her
husband.
“There was just a lot of
lashing out at us,” Kara
Copes said. “...(The twin)
kept referring to ‘she
didn’t like these rules, she
didn’t like these rules.’”
She said the coun-
selors and the twins’
grandparents were all
concerned about the be-
havioral issues.
On the last day of
school before summer
vacation in 2013, she said
she learned the twins had
stolen her daughter’s iPod
and broken it. Kara Copes
told the twins they would
have to pay for the iPod.
About a month later,
Kara Copes said, when
the twins were staying
with an aunt, she texted
them to let them know
she had taken $20 each
from their accounts and
that their debt was paid.
She said the twins
called back offering to
give the daughter a dif-
ferent iPod, and she told
them she had already or-
dered a new one.
“(One of them) start-
ed screaming and get-
ting very angry,” Kara
Copes said, adding she
could hear the other twin
also yelling in the back-
ground.

MSU to play 15 of
first 18 at Dudy Noble

STARKVILLE — The Mississippi State baseball
will waste no time showing off the completed Duty
Noble Field.
The program released its 2019 schedule Thurs-
day, revealing that 15 of the first 18 games are at
home. The only three that will be away from home
will be in the Frisco College Baseball Classic, a pre-
mier non-conference event in which MSU will travel
to Dr. Pepper Ballpark in Frisco, Texas, the home of
the Double-A Frisco Roughriders, for games against
Sam Houston State, Texas Tech, and Nebraska.
The season will begin Feb. 15 with a three-game
series against Youngstown State. MSU will play
host to Alabama-Brmingham on Wednesday, Feb.
20, before completing its home-and-home series
with Southern Mississippi with a three-game set
beginning Feb. 22. Jackson State and Southeastern
Louisiana will visit Dudy Noble Field on Feb. 26 and
27 before the Frisco College Baseball Classic, where
MSU will play Sam Houston State on Friday, March
1, Texas Tech on Saturday, March 2, and Nebraska
on Sunday, March 3.
East Carolina and Arkansas-Pine Bluff will visit
MSU on March 5 and 6 before a three-game series
with Maine beginning March 8. The final home
game of the non-conference slate is against Gram-
bling on March 13 before Southeastern Conference
play begins March 15 with a three-game series at
Florida.

have just tried to stay humble and continued to

Akins issues warning for EMCC opponents

omore defensive back JaQuez Akins
had a word of warning for other foot-
ball-playing junior colleges Thursday
night.
“The boys here are coming for a
three-peat,” Akins said. “They have
all of the pieces on defense. They have
linebackers back. They have linemen
back. They have everything they need.
Now that the program is playing back
to its standard on defense, that changes
everything. (EMCC) has never done
the three in a row, but that’s coming
next year.”
On Thursday, No. 1 EMCC beat No.
2 Garden City C.C. 10-9 at Carnie Smith
Stadium to repeat as National Junior
College Athletic Association (NJCAA)
national champions.
The EMCC defense stifled Garden
City C.C. en route to the victory. EMCC
held its opponent below its nation-best
11.4 points per game allowed average in
the regular season. Six of 12 opponents
were held to nine points or less.
When hearing Akins’ claim, fresh-
man Fred Hervey — the team’s lead-
ing tackler this season — was eager to
agree.

For the first time, the NJCAA na-
tional championship game was held

pionship was decided in this stadium.

EMCC left Scooba on Monday and
stopped at the University of Arkansas
for practice Tuesday. A dinner was
held Wednesday.
“The entire event was spectacular,”
EMCC coach Buddy Stephens said.
“They went out of their way to make
this a first-class experience for our
players and our coaches. Junior college
football has always been important in
the state of Kansas. This is one of those
places where it is done right. Hopefully,
we can come back next year and watch
it as it grows.”
EMCC has won three national ti-
tles in Mississippi and one in Yuma,
Arizona.

place Thursday night, when No.
1 EMCC beat No. 2 Garden City
C.C. 10-9 to win the National Ju-
nior College Athletic Association
(NJCAA) national championship
at Carnie Smith Stadium.
“This was just an unbeliev-
able experience,” McIntosh said.
“The program (at EMCC) has
a reputation. I found it to be so
much more than that. It was a
life-changing experience. Fortu-
nately, we ended it with a national
championship.”
EMCC won its fifth national
title in the past eight seasons.
Coach Buddy Stephens has led
EMCC to back-to-back titles
twice. The EMCC sophomore
class finished 23-1.
McIntosh wasn’t at EMCC for
the first half of that record. He
relishes being part of the second
half.
“It’s just been special,” McIn-
tosh said. “There is just a lot of
talent here. That doesn’t mean
the championship is automatic.”
The win was anything but
automatic. The EMCC defense
forced four turnovers and picked
up the slack on a night EMCC
gained only 211 yards. The Li-
ons were outgained in their last
two games of the 2018 campaign
after not having it happen in
18-straight games.
“The defense really had our
backs,” said EMCC sophomore
wide receiver Kalem Reddix,
who was also here for one year
after transferring from Missis-
sippi Gulf Coast C.C. “It was
always a team effort. However,
our defense was just special this
year. They held things together
when we had some three-and-
outs. Winning this championship
is just an amazing feeling. I have
never been a part of something
like this.”
Messiah deWeaver was 17-for-
29 for 96 yards. The Michigan
State transfer held up his end of
the deal by not throwing any in-
terceptions.
For an offensive-minded coach
like Stephens, the win was unusu-
al. EMCC has been held below 20
points three times in 123 games
under Stephens. Two of those
have been in the last two games.
The win came on the heels
of a 19-14 victory against Jones
College in the Mississippi Asso-
ciation of Community and Junior
Colleges (MACJC) State champi-
onship.
“This is not how we have gone
about winning some champion-
ships in the past,” Stephens said.
“However, defense wins champi-
onships. This year, we won with
one of the best defenses we have
ever had. It was one of the best de-
fenses our league has ever seen.
They were lights out the entire
season.
“We had our chances on offense
in this game, too. We just couldn’t
finish our scoring chances.”
McIntosh broke off a couple of
nice runs to finish with 69 yards
on 18 carries. Dontario Drum-
mond — the state’s best receiver
— had six catches for 39 yards.

tackle away from going the dis-
tance.
Drummond turned the game
against Jones College around
with two long catches from Ty-
Quan Ulmer. The Lions tried
to find another spark by insert-
ing Ulmer midway through the
game. Unfortunately, EMCC
didn’t receive a big lift.
“The offense had an off night,”
Drummond said. “However, it’s
about winning the championship.
Two of the best defenses bat-
tled in this game. We just made
enough plays to come out on top.”
For McIntosh and deWeaver,
a move from Division I to Scooba
paid off. For Ulmer, Reddix, and
others, a move from another com-
munity college to Scooba paid off.
For Mississippi boys, such as
linebacker Untareo Johnson, it
was all smiles as a group of fans
that made the 10-hour trip from
Scooba took to the field for pic-
tures with their favorite players.
“This was for the Mississip-
pi boys,” Johnson said. “Garden
City has hardly any Kansas boys
(the roster listed two). Our team
is full of Mississippi boys. Maybe
they can learn from something
from us. That is how you win
championships.”
