ABSTRACT

A common idea among readers is that a specific type of text can affect the success of the

reader. The problem is that readers don’t completely understand the relationship between the

specific type of text and the success of the reading that occurs. This lack of understanding causes

readers to make uninformed decisions about which type of text to use to have the most success in

accomplishing their reading purpose.

This study identified the book preference (physical book or e-book) of junior high school

students, while analyzing the success of the students in the class that corresponds with that text.

There were four questions addressed in this study: What is the profile of the respondents? What

are the learning tool preferences of junior high school students? What are the perceived

advantages and the disadvantages of e-book? Is there a significant difference on the academic

achievement between junior high school using physical books and e-book? The data for this

study were collected using a standardized questionnaire, and the results of this questionnaire

were analyzed to draw conclusions.

The results demonstrate that there was no significant difference in the academic

achievement of the students in terms of learning tools of the two groups, suggesting that the e-

book is as effective for learning as the physical book.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge those who help and stay with me in

the completion of this research. First, I would like to thank my assistant leader, Ms. Lorraine

Dela Pena, for the countless hours and superb effort she put forth in being with in times of need.

She read an endless number of drafts, and provided corrections, comments, and suggestions

throughout the entire writing process. Ms. Lorraine also helped a great deal in making our

thoughts and ideas become realities, and was instrumental in putting me in contact with the

necessary people to help me in gathering our data. Without her constant support and guidance,

the completion of this research would not have been possible.

I would also like to acknowledge the other members of my group: Ms. Ella Mae De

Jesus, Ms. Alexandrea Manabat, Ms. Raven Jezreel Flores and Ms. Beryl Pauline Gumasing.

Their guidance and suggestions were greatly appreciated, and their ideas evident in this final

product. The perspective and support of my four hardworking members was necessary in further

developing the research and reporting the data that were a part of this research. I sincerely thank

them for their time and effort.

Furthermore, I would like to thank the school administrators and high school teachers for

allowing us to come into their classes and take time to administer our survey and collect data.

Without their cooperation, the data collection process for this research would not possible. I

thank them for their time and willingness to cooperate.

iv

Finally, I would like to thank Dr. Marilou Galman for her tremendous support and

patience throughout our research. She have provided constant encouragement and stability in our

research, especially throughout the school year at St.Paul College of Bocaue. I sincerely thank all

of them for always standing by me in all that we do and have surpass while making this research

possible.
