SPECIALTY DOORS AND FRAMES
1. GENERAL
1.1 Contract Documents
1.1.1 All Work of this Section shall comply with the requirements of the Contract
Documents for the Main Building Works, with the Drawings, Schedules and with
all other Contract Documents.
1.2 Work Included
Shall include but not be limited to :-
1.2.1 Supply and fix purpose made roof / ceiling hatches
1.2.2 Supply and fix purpose made floor hatches
1.2.3 Supply and fix purpose made fire hosereel hinged covers
1.2.4 Supply and fix standard tile-fronted wall access panels to toilets
1.2.5 Supply and fix automatic sliding operation doors complete with all control gear,
safety gear, seals and all parts necessary to complete the installation
1.2.6 Supply and fix acoustic doors and seals in locations specified
1.2.7 Supply and fix purpose made stainless steel doors and frames
1.2.8 Provide detailed shop drawings

1.4 Quality Assurance
1.4.1 Furnish each door type as a complete unit produced by the same manufacturer
1.4.2 Insert and Anchorages
Furnish inserts and anchoring devices which must be set in concrete or built into
masonry for the installation of the units. Provide setting drawings, templates,
instructions and directions for installation of anchorage devices. Coordinate
delivery with other work to avoid delay.
1.4.3 Wind Loading
Design and reinforce exterior door units to withstand maximum anticipated wind
pressures for the location of the work. Submit design calculation supporting same.
1.4.4 Coordination
Coordination work of this Section with all related work specified elsewhere but
necessary to the proper completion of the Work.

1.4.5 Manufacturers must provide proof of approval for use in Kingdom of Bahrain and
the ability to provide parts and/or service on 24-hour notice, and have available
personnel and equipment for routine maintenance service.
1.4.6 All testing shall be done by the Contractor in the presence of the Manufacturer's
Representative and the Architect shall be given adequate notice to witness the
test. Make all repairs and adjustments required and retest.
1.4.7 Refer to Section 01 02 10 Reference Standards to comply with the requirements
of the referenced Standards
1.5 Submittals
1.5.1 Shop Drawings:
a) Indicate door and frame elevations, sections, materials, gauges, finishes,
fabrication and erection details.
b) Provide setting drawings, templates, instructions and directions for
installation of anchorage devices.
c) Locate and dimension finish ironmongery and details of glazed vision
panels.
1.5.2 Samples:
a) Door : 300mm x 300mm corner section showing door
construction
b) Welded Frame : 300mm x 300mm head and jamb corner section
showing welded corner construction.
c) Anchors : One of each type appropriate to the wall or partition
construction.
1.5.3 Certification:
a) Submit as required laboratory test data indicating that doors and frames
of the types proposed have been tested for the required hourly rating.
b) Submit acoustical test reports from a recognized independent laboratory,
in accordance with ASTM E90 to assure acoustical performance of the
acoustic doors have previously been attained.
2. PRODUCTS

2.2 Materials
2.2.1 Purpose made ceiling hatches to be steel framed and to the size and positions
shown on the drawings. Infill finishes all as shown on the drawings.
2.2.2 Purpose made steel framed floor hatches set into concrete floors, complete with
chequer-plate metal flaps. All to the sizes, locations and details shown on the
drawings.
2.2.3 Supply and install fire hose reel hinged covers to the sizes and locations shown.
2.2.4 Construct, supply and install stainless steel doors and frames. Construction
similar to that of standard galvanised steel doors. Minimum sheet facing thickness
1.5mm. Refer to drawings for sizes details and locations.
2.2.5 Supply and install to the positions and sizes indicated on the drawings "ALPRO"
(or similar) tile fronted wall access panels all to manufacturer's recommendations.
2.2.6 Supply and install automatic sliding doors to the selected manufacturer's
recommendations and at locations indicated on the drawings. Ensure all tracks,
ironmongery, electrical motors, fusible links and control devices are correctly
installed. Safety photo cells shall be concealed in walls or ceilings. Automatic
sliding doors shall be wired to the Fire Alarm System
2.2.7 Supply and install automatic casement doors all as item 2.2.6.
2.2.8 Supply and install all ironmongery. Refer to Section 08 80 00 - Ironmongery and
coordinate with same for quality, type, finish and operation unless otherwise
specified herein.
2.2.9 Supply and install "Bunka" RE 17 acoustic door seals to all acoustic doors.
2.3 Delivery, Storage and Handling
2.3.1 Special door units shall be delivered, stored, handled and installed so as not to be
damaged or deformed. Abraded, scarred, or rusty areas shall be cleaned and
touched up immediately upon detection, with the type paint used for shop painting.
Damaged surfaces that cannot be repaired to the satisfaction of the Architect, will
not be accepted, and shall be replaced.
2.3.2 Store all components in a dry, protected location, off the ground, and in a manner
to prevent damage until installed. Provide waterproof factory packaging that will
not damage components and that can, and shall be, kept around components until
ready for installation.
2.3.3 Glass shall be stored in a dry, well ventilated location. Handling of glass shall be
kept to a minimum, and all glass shall be carefully protected from soiling and from
condensation and other moisture.
2.4 Finishes on Stainless Steel
2.4.1 Finish shall be uniform and free from blemishes, discolourations and other defects.
2.4.2 Finish for stainless steel shall be non-directional SUS 304 BA V1B.0.B.2 finish.

2.4.3 Touch-up finish on site as required.
2.5 Automatic Sliding Doors
2.5.1 Automatic sliding doors shall be custom made including all hardware and controls,
as per details, materials and finishes shown on Drawings.
2.5.2 Acceptable model:
a) Tormax Tmx
b) Stanley Auto-Slide 8000 - Custom
For the above acceptable models, include the following:
 Radar module type both sides
 Manufacturer of automatic sliding door. Hardware shall have a permanent
service agency in Kingdom of Bahrain.
2.5.3 Control shall be by radar - Stanley Magic Scan on both sides of doors with
additional control from remote console.
2.5.4 Controls shall be integrated with the house fire protection alarm system with 24V
DC operation.
2.6 Acoustic Doors
2.6.1 All doors with acoustic requirements shall be provided with STC value as shown
in the Door Schedule, and of dimensions indicated in the architectural drawings or
door schedules.
2.6.2 Design
The door design shall be provided complete with door frame, anchors, sound seals
on the frame and threshold seal under the door panel. The door installation shall
be in true flatness with the frame to effect acoustic sealing. The hinges shall be
smooth on door opening and closing. Raised threshold will not be acceptable
unless approved by the Architect.
The door frames shall be steel-anchored and grouted solid to supporting wall
structure. All welding shall be ground smooth. The complete fabrication shall be
primed and painted to approved colour selected by the Architect.
The architectural design of the acoustic door shall be complied with, this includes
the door leaf and door frame.
Every acoustic timber door shall be constructed of solid timber of a density not
less than 780 kg/m3. It shall be finished with a flush panel surface free from bowing
or bending.
The timber shall be treated to prevent any vermin attack after installation. The
door leaf shall be supplied painted with two undercoats to receive final painting or
veneer finish as instructed by the Architect.
The full construction shall be designed to allow for necessary level adjustments at
site but will not degrade the desired acoustic and fire properties of the door.
2.6.3 Shop Drawings and Fabrication
The Contractor shall submit detailed door drawings for approval. All fabrication
shall not deviate from the approved details. All doors shall be rigidly framed,
accurately fitted, neat in appearance and free from warping or buckling with all
corners true and welds dressed smooth and made invisible.
After fabrication, each door panel shall be stored in a supported condition to
ensure that the panel will remain true in shape and flatness until installed.

The door leaf with frame shall be delivered to site complete with door frame, well
protected from any delivery-damage or cause a downgrading of the required
acoustic property of the door.
As a requirement of the acoustic door installation, the complete door leaf in the
frame shall be installed in place as as a unit and in accordance with the
manufacturer’s instructions.
Where specified, each fire-rated door shall bear a fire-rating and approval label to
fire authority requirements.
2.6.4 Acoustic Testing
The door design and fabrication shall follow an accredited and proven test
performance to meet specified STC value based on either
ASTM E90 or ISO 140 on Laboratory Measurement or Airborne Sound
Transmission Loss of Building Elements and their Classification of Sound Rating.
Once installed, the doors shall be tested to meet field sound reduction of not less
than 5dB lower than the STC value when tested with a pink noise and sound level
measured at 1.5 metres from door face for both sides of the door.
The Main Contractor shall supply acoustic doors which shall comply with the
specified STC ratings and shall ensure compliance with the specified
performance.
The performance of the acoustic door shall take into account the specified
ironmongeries.
2.6.5 Special Consideration
Where viewing windows are specified, the glazing thickness shall be selected
appropriately to render the complete door assembly meeting the acoustic criterion.
The Contractor shall stipulate in his shop drawings the maximum viewing window
dimensions allowable in order not to adversely affect the performance of the door
design.
Where double glazing is required to be provided, the Contractor shall be fully
responsible for the airtight seal such that no condensation will take place in the
glazing cavity. Each glass panel also shall be made to be capable of being
removed independently for cleaning and replacement.
2.6.6 Fire Rating Requirement
Where doors are required to meet a specified fire rating, the Contractor shall be
responsible to ensure that the necessary fire test documentation has been carried
out.
2.6.7 Surface Finishes
The door finishes shall be selected to Architect’s approval and where required
shall match other door finishes.
3. EXECUTION
3.1 Inspection
3.1.1 Prior to all Work of this Section, carefully inspect the installed work of all other
trades and verify that all such work is complete to the point where this installation
may properly commence.
3.1.2 Verify that Work of this Section may be installed in strict accordance with the
original design, the approved Shop Drawings, and the manufacturer's
recommendations.
3.1.3 Do not proceed with installation in areas of discrepancy until all such
discrepancies have been fully resolved.

3.2 Installation
3.2.1 Install all work of this Section firmly anchored, secured, positioned, level and
complete with necessary ironmongery and wiring where required, in accordance
with final Shop Drawings and approved Door Schedule.
3.2.2 Provide all parts and fittings including all drilling and cutting required to make the
installation complete.
3.2.3 After installation, touch up steel shop coated surfaces which may have become
scratched, abraided or damaged. Use same paint material as used for shop
application and as specified.
3.2.4 Final painting by others will be site applied as specified under Section 09 80 00 -
Painting.
3.2.5 Manufacturer's Standards
a) Materials, components and systems incorporated in the work shall be
mixed, applied, installed and otherwise used in accordance with the
standards and procedures of the appropriate manufacturers.
3.2.6 Architectural Stainless Steel Work
a) Stainless steel doors, transom panels, vestibule and lobby components
and all other stainless steel work shall be fabricated from Grade 316
stainless steel and constructed to provide a total flatness, giving true non-
distorted reflections, following jointing and details as per Architect’s
Drawings.
b) Sheet shall be 1.6 mm thick or as shown on Drawings of selected quality,
fully stretcher levelled to perfect flatness.
c) Finish shall be as specified under Finishes and as per approved samples.
d) Joints are permitted only where shown on Drawings. Joints shall be set to
a uniform width, hairline joints tightly fitted.
e) Care shall be taken at joints and corner areas to assure a flat finished
surface without “pillow” or “roll-off” effect. Edges of bent shapes shall be
finished to have consistent and small arrises.
f) Where exposed fasteners are used, provide ovalhead countersunk screw
of smallest possible head size; with screws properly finished and seated.
g) Joints at door shall be welded and finished; glass top shall be on one side
only.
3.2.7 Acoustic Doors
a) The installation shall be carefully performed by skilled workmen under the
supervision of a suitably qualified Engineer. Special care must be
exercised to follow the manufacturer’s printed instructions including
recommended tolerances to achieve required acoustical seal.
b) Store doors and frames at the building site under cover. Place units well
above the ground to prevent rust and damage and to provide room for air
circulation. Avoid the use of non-vented plastic or canvas shelters which
create humidity chambers.
c) Install frames plumb, rigid, in true alignment, and fasten them to retain
their position and clearance during wall construction. Fill frames in
masonry walls with mortar as the wall is laid up.
d) Install doors plumb and in true alignment. Operate doors and verify that
doors open and close smoothly with no binding. Inspect fit of all door
seals. Inspect final erection and fit of all assemblies and components.

e) Cut and form all joints to hairline measurements. Intersecting corners of
frames and related components shall be neatly fitted, mitered and welded
continuously. Make all exposed joints smooth and invisible. Grind all
exposed welds smooth and flush, form all arrises sharp and true. Mitre
all face joints.
3.3 Protection, Cleaning and Acceptance
3.3.1 Upon completion of the work and at such time as directed, all protection shall be
removed and the exposed surfaces of all work cleaned and left free of smears,
scratches, and abrasions. Any damage to finishes shall be restored to original
condition at no additional cost to the Employer.
3.3.2 Manufacturer's delivery or job markings on glass and adhesive for manufacturer's
labels shall be either a neutral or slightly acidic material. In no case shall such
material be alkaline. Any staining of glass by alkaline material shall be cause for
rejection of the glass.
3.3.3 Immediately upon completion of installation of each pane of glass, markings and
labels shall be carefully and completely removed from the pane. Thereafter, no
markings or labels of any sort shall be placed on the glass.
3.3.4 Glazed openings shall be identified by suitable warning tapes or flags of cloth or
paper attached with an approved, non-staining adhesive or other suitable means,
as approved, to the framing of the opening. Tapes or flags shall not be in contact
with glass.
3.3.5 All work refered to in this Section shall be effectively protected against weld
splatter, spray-on fire-proofing, concrete droppings, alkaline masonry washes,
paint drips, and other deleterious substances. Any such soiling not promptly and
completely removed, and resulting in flaws to the finish shall be rejected and
required to be replaced.
3.3.6 The finished installation shall be sound, watertight, and free from defects of
materials and workmanship. After inspection of the installation, all smears, stains,
soiling, markings, droppings, splatter, dust and other foreign material shall be
removed and the metal and glass washed clean with a mild neutral or slightly
acidic solution as recommended by the material manufacturers. In no case shall
alkaline or abrasive agents be used to clean any surface. Care shall be taken
during cleaning to avoid scratching of the surfaces by grit particles.
3.3.7 Final acceptance of any of the specialist acoustic door systems will only be made
upon verification on site by a qualified representative of the manufacturer that all
work has been executed in accordance to approved drawings, conforming to the
manufacturer’s recommendations and meets the required acoustic performance
standard.
3.3.8 As part of the handover for acceptance provide instruction sessions to the
Employer's personnel on the operation and maintenance procedures of all
acoustic doors.

3.4 Testing
3.4.1 Work of this Section shall be site tested for :
a) Closing and locking operation, including ease, speed, sound and
tightness of resetting door after manual closing.
b) Chain operation.
c) Motor operation.
d) Water testing for door seals.
3.4.2 Contractor's representative and manufacturer's representative shall be present
during testing.
