4. Helaman 13–15. Prophecies of Samuel the Lamanite

a. As you read Helaman 13–15, make a list of the significant prophecies of Samuel the Lamanite.

Scripture References

1. Helaman 13:5, 8–11; 15:17

There will be wars, famine and pestilence and destruction because of the hardness of hearts of the Nephites.

2. Helaman 13:6–7

Many shall be slain and they will be destroyed except they exercise faith and repentance on the Lord Jesus Christ.

Fire will come down and destroy their homes and cities except they repent.

4. Helaman 14:1–9

The Son of God will be born and will fulfill His role as a Savior and Redeemer. There will be lights and no darkness in
heaven. There will be two days but the night will not be darkened. A new star will appear at His birth and there shall
be many signs and wonders in heaven.

5. Helaman 14:20–27

When the Son of God will die, the sun, moon and stars will refuse to give its light and there will be darkness for three
days. There will be thunderings, lightnings, earthquakes, and moving of lands, great tempests, mountains and valleys
to be deformed, highways broken, cities become desolate and graves or righteous but dead saints will be resurrected.

6. Helaman 15:11–16

In the latter days, the Lamanites will return to the Lord and come to the knowledge of their forefathers, brought to
the true knowledge of the gospel and their Redeemer and be numbered among His sheep because of His mercy. While
the Nephites will be destroyed if they will not repent.

b. Share in writing your thoughts about the following questions:

• As you analyze the chart above, what insights do you gain?

Analyzing the many prophesies of Samuel the Lamanite, tells me how the world and its influence will bring us to
darkness and destruction. That’s why our leaders have taught us to live in the world but not out of the world. In order to
win the challenges of this world, only the Savior that we must rely and depend on.
• How were the signs of the Lord’s birth related to light?
Relating to the signs of the Lord’s birth, it gave light to the night adds a special day during the night time. In regards
to light, the Savior’s light will dispel all the darkness that surrounds us. Darkness may mean confusion, effects of sins like
guilt and sorrow, sadness and the power of the adversary.

• What happened to the light at the time of His death?

When the savior died, the sun hides its light for three days.

• What do these signs teach us about what life is like with the Savior and without Him? How could these signs relate
to His Second Coming?
Symbolically and literally, the savior is the only source of true light. When we drew away from him, darkness creeps
into our lives and the light will get dimmer. This also symbolize how our faith in Him represents the light in us. As we
increase in faith, light and inspiration leads us to happiness and blessings while a weakened faith will counterfeit all the
blessings in store for us.

c. Study Helaman 14:28–31; 15:1–5; 16:4–5.

According to these verses, write an explanation for the purposes of these signs to the Nephites and Lamanites.
These signs given to them were in a form of judgment on their part. The way they respond to these signs tell
whether they will exercise faith or doubt. Based upon how they deal, this will give them righteous judgment and
blessings after mortality or condemnation when they heed not to the prophesies of the prophet Samuel the Lamanite.

d. Read the student manual commentaries “Helaman 14:11: ‘That Ye Might Know the Conditions of Repentance’” and
“Helaman 14:15–19: The Atonement Overcomes Death” (pages 283–85). Write a paragraph explaining how each of us
has already experienced spiritual death. Write another paragraph detailing what is required in order to escape the
second spiritual death.

In the beginning, Adam and Eve sinned because of eating the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil to
which God forbade them to partake. As a result, they have experienced physical death and spiritual death. Physical
death is the separation of spirit and body, while Spiritual Death separates us entirely to the presence of God. All sons
and daughters of God, and children are now subject to Physical and Spiritual Death, since we are born naturally and
carnally.
The process of repentance includes sorrow for sin, abandonment of sin, confession of sin, restitution of sin,
obedience to all commandments, and recognition of the Savior. Sorrow for sin means godly sorrow not worldly sorrow.
Worldly sorrow is sorrow because they are caught and punished for their actions. While Godly sorrow leads to
repentance, to recognize and realize the depths of sin and sorrow that he/ she offended our God. This is also called the
broken heart and contrite spirit. Abandonment of sin means not doing it and permanently abandoning the
transgression. Confession is between the Lord, the victim and to the Lord’s servants as to the manner and degree of sin
committed. Restitution for sin means restoring all that is stolen, damaged, inflicted or defiled from the victim.
Obedience to all commandments means applying throughout your life the gospel and doing All and not partially the
commandments as written and taught by old and new prophets. Recognition of the Savior means, that only He can
forgive us and has the power to strengthen and help overcome our weaknesses contrary to the knowledge that we
alone can overcome without any help from the Savior.

2. Helaman 12:1–6. The Lord’s Chastening

a. According to Doctrine and Covenants 95:1 and Hebrews 12:6, make a list of those whom the Lord chastens and for
what purpose.
The Lord chastens us because He wants us to learn, change and improve. He also loves and wants us to live with Him
someday to dwell in His presence. Because of His unending mercy and forgiveness, he teach and chastens us. The only
way for us to be delivered from transgression is for us to be chastened by Him. When we know the purposes of our
Chastening, we are humbled and let the Lord change us.

b. From Helaman 10:14–18; 11:1–6, 24–37; 12:1–6, answer the following questions:

• What were the people doing that led to the Lord’s chastening?
They were chastened because they revile, harden their hearts to Nephi which is the Lord’s prophet. Also because of
their contentions, secret combinations, wars and murder intentions.

• What kind of chastening did the people experience?

The Lord lets them experience famine in the land. The land gave no grains and fruits. There was a complete drought
and destruction.

• Why is chastening sometimes necessary to help people turn to God?

Chastening is sometimes necessary so that they will remember to turn to their God and repent of their evil doings.

5. Helaman 15:3–16. The Process of Conversion

a. Read about the word conversion in the Bible Dictionary (page 650). Explain in writing how the people in Helaman
15:3–9 demonstrated they were truly converted.
They were truly converted by truly doing their duties, walking circumspectly before God, observing to keep the
Commandments, its statutes and judgments according to the Law of Moses. They strive to be diligent and not be weary
in converting their brethren to the Gospel by faith and repentance. They buried their weapons of war and take an oath
not to kill anymore. They were steadfast in what they believe.

b. Read Helaman 15:10–16. List ways the Lord promises to bless the future family members of these converted
Lamanites.
The Lord promises to bless the future family of converted Lamanites by:
 They will prolong their days.
 They will come to the knowledge of the truth.
 Promises will be extended to their brethren and next generations.
 They will be numbered among the Savior’s sheep.

c. Write a short paragraph that shows how your own conversion to the gospel of Jesus Christ can influence those
around you as well as provide blessings for your future family.

When you are converted to the gospel, you will be able to leave those important principles to your future
generations by teaching my children the gospel culture. The legacy of leading them to the truth and building a strong
traditional gospel standards, they will be able to carry also to their future children. As they adopt these important
practices, my family and their future family will also be blessed.
