Text: Discrete and Combinatorial Mathematics (5th edition) by Grimaldi. We will cover most
of chapters 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13. The School of Mathematics has prepared Course
Materials for all courses, including Math 3012.

Homework/Quiz/Piazza: If you have not done so, please activate your Piazza account for this
class. (You should have received an activation email.) We will use Piazza for announcements,
homework assignments, etc… You can view/participate in course-related discussions at Piazza.

Check Piazza for the homework, assigned weekly and collected at the very beginning of the
lecture on the indicated due date. You should make every effort to complete the homework
assignments and seek help with problems you have not been able to solve. Selected problems
from each assignment will be graded. Homework is extremely important as it helps you to attain
a deep understanding of the materials. Write up your work clearly so that you can understand it
yourself upon review. You may collaborate on homework problems, but you have to write up
your own solutions. No late homework papers will be accepted.

Occassional pop quizzes may be given, usually at the beginning or the end of a class.

Penalty for not turning in homework: If you turn in less than 50% of the assigned homework
you will get an F, regardless of the results of exams and tests.

Examinations: There will be 2 full period in-class tests and a final exam. The exact dates of the
two tests will be announced 1-2 weeks in advance in class. Tentatively the first test will be on
September 25, 2018. There will be no make-up tests. When absence from an in-term exam has
been excused, the relevant portion of the final exam will be used as a "make-up" test. The final
exam will cover all course materials and will be administered on the date assigned by the official
school calendar. All examinations will be closed-book and closed-notes unless otherwise
indicated. Calculators and electronic devices will not be permitted on any of the exams or
quizzes. Showing work is required on all written assessments.
Absence from quizzes and examinations: If absence is due to a legitimate reason, I require, on
the day of the exam, an e-mail message briefly describing the reason, and later, good evidence
(in writing) of why you were absent (such as doctor's notes...).The penalty for an absence not
excused is an exam of 0.
Attendance: Attendance is required for all lectures. You are expected to come prepared and
actively participate in every lecture. In the event of an absence, you are responsible for all missed
materials, assignments, and any additional announcements or schedule changes given in class.
Class disruptions of ANY kind will NOT be tolerated and may result in your removal from the
classroom and/or loss of participation points for that day. Please show courtesy to your fellow
classmates and instructor by adhering to the following class rules:

 Turn off all laptops, cellular phones, and other electronic devices, unless you have a
documented need to use such devices for note-taking, during class.
 Come to class on time and stay for the entire class period.
 Refrain from conversing with your fellow students.
 Put away any reading materials unrelated to the course.
Grading: Grades are computed so that the two in-class tests count 45%, final 40%, and
homework and quizzes 15%. (However, see penalty for not turning in enough homework.)Letter
grade cut-offs: A 90, B 80, C 70, D 60.

Academic Dishonesty: All students are expected to comply with the Georgia Tech Honor Code
(the honor code can be found at http://www.policylibrary.gatech.edu/student-affairs/code-
conduct). Any evidence of cheating or other violations of the Georgia Tech Honor Code will be
submitted directly to the Dean of Students. Cheating includes, but is not limited to:

 Using an unapproved calculator, books, or any form of notes on tests.

 Copying directly from any source, including friends, classmates, tutors, internet sources,
or a solutions manual. Allowing another person to copy your work.
 Taking a test or quiz in someone else's name, or having someone else take a test or quiz
in your name.
 Asking for a regrade of a paper that has been altered from its original form.

Regrading of Papers: If a problem on your test has been graded in error, you must submit a
regrade request to me in writing, along with your paper, no more than one week after the tests
have been returned in class. Should you wish to have your paper regraded, do not change or add
to the work on your paper! You MUST check your answers with the solutions BEFORE
submitting such a request.
Learning Disabilities: Any student with a certified learning disability can request necessary
accommodation. Such requests must be made well in advance of the time that the
accommodation is required. Follow the ADAPTS office’s instruction.

How to do well in this course: Unless you have studied this subject before you will probably
need to spend 2-3 hours on the average to review each day's lecture and complete the
assignments. Learning mathematics requires steady effort. Cramming is very risky. Get help
(from instructor, lecture assistant, MathLab, etc…) as soon as you begin to fall behind. It is
important to keep a good set of lecture notes. If you miss a lecture, borrow notes from a
classmate.
