Starting the EFB System

The following steps are required to be followed by the Engineer on powering

up the aircraft for departure before the Flight Crew arrive :

1. When aircraft power is established Laptop Docking Station is shown as ‘Off’

2. Lift the Guard and Press the “OFF” Switch

3. “OFF” Light will extinguish
4. “Start” Light appears after approximately 10 seconds

5. Start Laptop by pressing “Start” Switch

6. “Start” light extinguishes
7. The laptop will take around 2 minutes to complete the boot process
8. If no images are displayed on the DU, adjust the brightness and if necessary
press the ‘Display’ power button on the DU.

Should the laptop fail to start after completing the above steps please refer to
alternate method of Starting the EFB System

When a new laptop has been fitted to the LDS, or following certain non-normal power
interruptions, the normal start up process will not work as described above.

1. To start the laptop in these circumstances the affected LDS should be opened
and the laptop carefully removed from the housing, taking care not to unplug any
wires.
2. On the front face of the laptop a power switch can be located. Sliding this switch
will manually boot the laptop.

3. Return the laptop to its LDS and ensure the 3G aerial is extended and UMTS
light is white (and not orange) as shown in “Connecting EFB to the internet”.
Failure to extend the aerial can limit 3G connectivity.

4. If the DU doesn’t displays CUBE following this process – open the laptop and
establish if CUBE is displayed on the screen. If it is, consider disconnecting all
cables and using the laptop as a Class I device. It must then be switched off and
stowed during critical phases of flight.

Connecting to the Internet and Charging

1. Check aerial extended on the laptop(s) in the LDS.

2. Check the UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) light on the

radio button on the corner of the laptop is illuminated white. This indicates it is on
and working. If orange it is not.

There are two 12.1“ Display Units (DU’s) located outboard of each pilot. The display
units are secured into the Mounting Device. Neither the DU or the Mounting Device
are adjustable in any way.

Screen control is on the left hand side of the DU. The screen may be powered on
and off and brightness adjusted using the top three buttons. An ‘View Offside‘ button
allows each screen to view the content of the other pilots DU.

There are 2 USB connectors at the top and bottom of the control area. The use of
these USB ports is prohibited. Towards the lower USB port there is a light sensor
that is not used at present.

3. When the EFB is on the battery indicator is located in the picture below:

If the battery is not charging the “lightning bolt” will not be displayed in the middle
of the battery. If this is the case check the power leads to each laptop in the LDS
and in the power sockets or ARINC connections.

If still not charging raise a defect in the technical log

connected via the LAN cable.

5. Check Vodafone coverage is present. If there is no coverage (or roaming is not

enabled for the country you are in) “NO SIG” will be displayed above the battery
indicator

Potential issues:

Screen Calibration

If any defects referring to screen calibration are reported in the Techlog, please be
aware that there is an ongoing investigation by Airbus and Rockwell Collins but we
do not yet have a definitive answer to the issue. Therefore any reported screen
calibration defect can be cleared from the ADD.

Reset user

For certain software bugs and faults this procedure might be necessary to reboot the
system. In order to correctly reset the user on the device please follow the steps
below:

1. Connect to the LAN (remember to turn updates off), by removing the laptop
from the aircraft and connect to a router in the appropriate line office using an
Ethernet cable, and not a Thomas Cook network. If you cannot connect to an
external network please email cube@thomascook.com .
2. Select the Thomas Cook Airlines icon (a) then CUBE command (b) illustrated
below.
