Florida agriculture officials have completed preparations to
grow hemp in the Sunshine State and say they’re ready to plant seeds in 2019.
According to Growing Produce, a trade publication for specialty-crop growers,
that’s far sooner than originally expected.
Florida legalized hemp production in 2017, but officials warned it could take
several years to find a cultivar that could grow under the 0.3% THC limit in
Florida’s tropical and subtropical climate.
But the initial work at the University of Florida has wrapped up, and three cities
have been identified for hemp cultivation in 2019:
Quincy (panhandle area). Hague (north-central Florida).
Homestead (south Florida).
University agronomist Zachary Brym told Growing Produce that the school
received DEA clearance to import live hemp seeds.
There is no timetable for private commercial hemp production to begin, but
Brym said research is just around the corner.
“We will be importing seeds ASAP and plan to put plants in the ground during
spring 2019,” he said.

DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH
Offers Free Prevention Program
The Florida Department of Health in Walton recognizes November as Diabetes
Awareness Month, a month set aside every year to raise awareness about diabetes and
promote the importance of taking steps to confront diabetes as a critical health issue. The
theme for this year is The Family and Diabetes, strengthening the role of the family in the
management, care, prevention, and education of diabetes.
The number of people diagnosed with diabetes has more than tripled in the last 20 years in
the U.S. In Florida, it is estimated that over 2.4 million people have diabetes and over 5.8
million have prediabetes. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in Florida.
There are three main types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes (diabetes
while pregnant). Women with diabetes have more difficulty conceiving and may have
poor pregnancy outcomes, so it is especially important for women to be aware of their risk
factors for developing diabetes, including having a family history of diabetes as well as
age, weight, and physical activity level.
When your blood sugar is higher than normal but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as
type 2 diabetes you may be at risk for prediabetes. Prediabetes is a serious health
condition that increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
Eighty-six million American adults have prediabetes. Nine out of 10 people with
prediabetes don’t know they have it. Fortunately, making healthy lifestyle choices can
delay or prevent type 2 diabetes and other serious health problems. A simple blood sugar
test to find out if you have prediabetes. Talk to your health care provider if you should be
tested.
Holly Holt, Health Officer, urges residents to participate in the free Diabetes Prevention
Program beginning January 15, 2019, at the DOH-Walton clinic located in DeFuniak
Springs, FL. Holt said “Due to better treatments, people with diabetes are now living
longer—and with a better quality of life—than ever before. Healthy lifestyles can also
reduce the impact that diabetes may have on your life. A blood test from your health care
provider can determine if you have diabetes. Early treatment can prevent serious problems

The art of losing weight

Achieving a healthy weight is a balancing act, and calories are

part of that equation. Fad diets may promise that counting carbs or
eating a mountain of grapefruit will make the pounds drop off, but
when it comes to weight loss, it is calories that count.
In basic terms, weight loss comes down to burning more calories
than are taken in. That is done by reducing extra calories from food
and beverages, and increasing calories burned through physical
activity. Simply put – eat less and exercise more.
Once we understand that simple but immutable concept, we are
ready to set realistic weight-loss goals and make a plan for reaching
them. Instead of relying on fad diets listed in magazines at the
check-out stand, talk to a physician about what is right for you.
Enlist the help of family and friends by asking them to support your
efforts and avoid preparing high-calorie meals or suggesting lunch
at a fast food restaurant. Anticipate how to handle situations that
challenge your resolve, such as eating out at restaurants or at a
friend’s home. Understand and accept that there will be minor set-
backs. You may give in to a craving for something you know you
should avoid. Instead of using that setback as an excuse to abandon
your weight-loss program, get right back to your healthy eating
regimen the very next day.
When considering a weight-loss program, consider the following
questions. Does it include various foods from the major food
groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, low-fat dairy products, lean pro-
tein sources and nuts? Does it include foods you like and would
enjoy eating for a lifetime — not just for several weeks or months?
Can you easily find these foods in your local grocery store? Will
you be able to eat your favorite foods, or better yet, all foods? Does
it fit your lifestyle and budget? Does it include proper amounts of
nutrients and calories to help you lose weight safely and effec-
tively? More importantly, is regular physical activity part of the
plan? The answers to all these questions should be yes.
The other important factor in losing weight is exercise. Although
working out in a gym or spa is a great way to trim fat and tone mus-
cle, exercising does not mean becoming a body builder. Exercising,
like all things, should be done in moderation, especially for anyone
unaccustomed to strenuous physical activity. Swimming, bicycling
and tennis are excellent forms of exercise. Aerobic exercise like
Zumba and stretching exercise like Tai Chi helps tone the body. A

A German shepherd is being hailed a hero
after alerting a Delaware family to a
potentially fatal gas leak.
The News Journal reports that 5-year-old
Greta barked to wake up her owner in the
middle of the night earlier this month and
alerted him to a leak from a propane stove.
The gas had filled several rooms in the
house.
Owner Ken Walsh called Greta, a rescue dog,
a “hero” for alerting him to the gas leak
before it hurt him, his wife, and 14-year-old
son.
Walsh said Greta was rewarded with a steak
and sweet potatoes.
