LAB REPORT #4: Digestive System

Biology I, Pre-Health Sciences – Durham College, Fall 2018

Name: /25 marks

EVALUATION NOTES

Read before submitting:

The pre-lab quiz and lab report are worth 5% of

your final grade.

This lab report is due by 11:59 pm on the due

date established by your instructor.

a. A report submitted after this due date is

considered late and will result in a grade of
0 unless a late submission is negotiated.
b. A negotiated late submission is a lab report
that has been submitted late for valid
reasons with the written permission of the
instructor. It is the responsibility of the
student to request permission to negotiate a
late submission no later than 48 hours prior
to the due date. Late submissions are
penalized 10% per day up to a max of 3
days (including weekends). After that a zero
is assigned.

This lab report should be submitted online to the DC Connect Assignments folder.

a. The report should be submitted using a fillable PDF available on DC Connect.

An instructional video is posted on how to use a fillable PDF (or click here).
Unless otherwise directed, submissions made by other means (E.g. email or
hard copy) will not be accepted and will result in a grade of 0.
b. Computer malfunctions or technical issues are not accepted as excuses for
late or missing reports. TIP: Submit your report early so that you have time to
resolve any potential technical issues prior to the deadline.

While students work in pairs to complete labs, each student must submit their own
original work.

PART 1 – GUESS THAT ENZYME (9 marks)

1. (3 × 0.5 marks) Use your lecture slides and lab manual to fill-in-the-blanks below :
a) Amylase breaks polysaccharides into __________________ like maltose.
b) Peptidase breaks smaller polypeptides into __________________.
c) Bile is a chemical that acts as a detergent to emulsify lipids while lipase is an
enzyme that breaks triglycerides into monoglycerides and free _____________.

2. (3 × 0.5 marks) Indicate whether the following statements are TRUE or FALSE:

a) ___________ A solution containing monosaccharides or disaccharides would

turn green, yellow, orange, or red after adding Benedict’s solution and heating.
b) ___________ A solution containing amino acids would turn pink (not violet)
after adding Biuret’s solution.
c) ___________ A solution containing triglycerides would contain red droplets
after adding Sudan IV solution.

3. (3 × 1 mark) Fill-in the following 3 three tables by placing a “Y” or “N” in each box
below. Base your answers off of evidence collected in Table 4.1 of the lab manual
(p. 53).

4. (3 × 1 mark) Match each of the three unknowns with the potential enzyme choices
(amylase, peptidase or the cocktail of bile salts, lipase, and amylase). Justify
your choice by referencing data from the table above. NOTE: If your data doesn’t
correspond perfectly, suggest possible sources of error that could have impacted
your results.

PART 2 – ANATOMY (3 marks)

5. (6 × 0.5 marks) Match the anatomy in the chart below to the sticker label present
on lab model (p. 54 of the lab manual).

Anatomy Sticker Label

Common bile duct

Duodenum

Epiglottis

Salivary glands

Pyloric sphincter

Pancreas

PART 3 – ENZYMES: FROM FOOD TO FUEL (13 Marks)

6. (6 × 1 mark) In the chart below, submit your six photos of the models that you built
in the lab at Stations 1-4. For full marks, make sure the following criteria are met:

Your photo is cropped/zoomed if necessary so that it is clear to the viewer.

Each photo contains all 4 models (carbs, proteins, nucleic acids, lipids)
Each photo clearly shows how the models are being digested. Comments
are added to the “additional comments” box if anything is unclear.

STATION 1 (p. 58) STATION 2 (p. 59)

Mouth Pharynx/Esophagus

STATION 3 (p. 60) STATION 4a (p. 61)

Stomach Small intestine – liver/gall bladder

5
STATION 4b (p. 61) STATION 4c (p. 62)

Small intestine – pancreas Small intestine – brush border

7. (6 × 0.5 marks) Indicate which digestion station corresponds to the descriptions

below. Answers may only be used once.

a) _____________ All 4 biological molecules can be broken down

b) _____________ Disaccharides are broken down into monosaccharides
c) _____________ Bile is released
d) _____________ No enzymes are secreted
e) _____________ Pepsin is released
f) _____________ Amylase begins the digestion of carbohydrates

6
8. (4 × 0.5 marks) Use the photo that you took in Station 4d (p. 62 of the lab manual)
to complete the table below and explain how digested carbohydrates, proteins,
nucleic acids and lipids are absorbed into the blood stream. Remember to answer
IN YOUR OWN WORDS.

Carbohydrates

Proteins

Nucleic
Acids

Lipids

9. (1 mark) Fully explain how your model in Station 4c would change for a person who
is lactose intolerant? Remember to use correct terminology.

10. (1 mark) Explain what is occuring when some one

accidentially squirts their drink out of their nose
(opposed to their mouth). Remember to use correct
terminology.
