40th Precinct by BIG

BIG’s 40th Precinct project in the Bronx, New York has been designed to
upend the societal conventions of police stations, removing physical and
psychological barriers between officers and the public to encourage a
new level of trust between these groups. The firm’s process of material
selection for the project was aided by Architizer, as they searched for the
products that would strike the perfect balance between safety and
openness for this key building in the local community.

“Here at BIG, we’re always trying to push typology as far as we can, but
this is definitely a client who had, by far, the most stringent set of
requirements that we’ve ever worked with before,” said project leader,
Elizabeth McDonald. “Using Architizer allowed us to research multiple
materials at the same time while quickly establishing that they met the
specific performance criteria of the NYPD. As a research tool, it

Pyrok - National September 11 Memorial Museum

Pyrok, one of the leading building-product manufacturers in the United

American Copper Building by SHoP

The architects at SHoP work directly with the firm’s materials librarian
