VISIT TO TEFKOT

Observations
TEFKOT has installed new extruder for FEP for which it
needed technical assistance.
Setup: FEP wire extrusion system in TEFKOT essentially
consists of following components:
1. Extruder – HYL300G SERIES
2. Primary water-cooling system
3. sSecondary water-cooling system
4. Wire conveying
5. Testing
6. Spool

a) Extruder- Extruder that TEFKOT use is a 24:1, HYL300G

SERIES, single screw extruder. It has feed temperature of
about 330 degree Celsius, metering temperature was about
340 degree Celsius and compression temperature was
about 330 degree Celsius.

Operation parameter:

Page 3

Line speed: 30m/min

Line diameter: 0.92mm
Error max: 0.95mm
Error min: 0.95mm

Primary water-cooling system: This water-cooling

system has water at a temperature of around 65 degree
Celsius. Immediate cooling is avoided because of possible
brittleness of the material.

Secondary water-cooling system: Secondly water is

cooled at room temperature to reduce its temperature
further.

Wire conveying: A wire conveying system is provided to

convey the wire to spool and maintain the tension for good
wrapping.
Testing: Testing at 1KV is done to ensure there is no
leakage or failure of insulation.

Spool: Then at the last wire is wrapped on the spool and

sent for further testing.

Problem and Solutions

Prob. 1: Insulation thickness was uneven after coming out

of the extruder.
Sol. 1: To increase the speed die of 5.5mm was being used
for which nozzle of 8.3mm was to be used. However, nozzle
of 5.59 was being used which was recommended for 2mm
die (which was being used previously). As soon as the
nozzle was changed, problem was resolved.

Prob.2: The set temperature was higher than

recommended (360,370,380).
Sol.2: Temperature was reduced to (330,340,350).

Prob 3: Off white color was observed.

Sol 3: First masterbatch concentration was increased to

4% but no improvement was seen, then it was again
reduced to 2% and after sometime color was improved
itself. As it turned out, the material remaining in the barrel
was interfering with the color. As soon as the material was
purged out, color was improved.

Thank you
Current challenges:
The team was having an issue while setting up the Skiving machine.
The common problems that they faced were:
1. The vibration in the machine was vigorous.
2. Waves or protruding lines were observed on the surface of the billet.

Problems Identified:
The hardness of the surface of the mandral was not adequate. From
consultants, it was proposed to use a mandral having high edge
thickness to increase hardness.

Solution Proposed:
A solution of annealing was proposed in which material is heated at
high temperature and then quenched in oil. Resulting crystallization
results in brittle material. However, this idea was refused on grounds of
being ineffective and inaccurate.

Final practice:

New mandral was arranged and was tried to fit on the machine.

Equipment seen:
1. 500 ton press: It is used for making sheets. They usually use 610
material.
