Check list has been provided (see relevant test sheet in Appendix A) to facilitate the
recording and preservation of installation records and test results.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE:
1) Big Fink Test Posts (7No), one each required at each of the isolation flanges
Each test post will be provided with a conduit that will be cast on a concrete surround
to allow for self-standing.
The location of the test post wrt the pipe is based upon site considerations; however it
is preferred to locate the test post close to the isolation flange and within 2-3 metres
from the pipe, if possible, however in a safe area.
The following cables will be traced to the conduit and be terminated inside the test
post:
Note that the magnesium anode cable and the cable from the
‘protected’/underground end of the pipe are linked together.
Likewise one of the two coupon cables are also linked to the protected section
of the pipe.

The reference electrode is soaked in a bucket of water for 15 minutes and the potential
difference against a portable (similar type) electrode is recorded.
This is then ready for installation. The reference electrode is to be located within 200-
300mm from the ‘protected’ pipe close to the isolation flange.
3) Coupon installation
The coupon must be again located close to the protected end of the pipe, within
300mm and close to the isolation flange. It is important to note that the coupon ‘steel’
face must face the pipe.
The magnesium is made available in coils. The ribbon anode is to be laid alongside
the pipe and on one side of the pipe. The anode will be located around 250mm from
the pipe and at a depth of 100mm below the invert land of the pipe.
The steel core within the magnesium ribbon must be exposed to make a cable
connection as well as extension to the magnesium ribbon. Refer drawings provided for
details.
5) Cable connection
Cable connection to the pipe will be thermite welded. Thermite weld will be
encapsulated using a
Cable connection to the magnesium anode will be made by connecting the
exposed core to the cable , using split bolt and bitumastic tape/ two part epoxy
putty encapsulation
Cable connection between magnesium anode lengths will be done likewise.
