Lesson
This activity can be described as a large group activity to start and then we will break it down into
Summary:
stations once we have finished with our circle time. We will begin our large group by reading a book,
however we will only read a chapter a day that way we can break it down and go over in more detail
what happened so everyone understands. If we have time and the chapter is short, we may try for
another chapter, but that depends on the mood of the room and the length of the chapters. The book I
chose to do is “Because of Winn-Dixie”. After we are done with each chapter I will have daily questions
written on the board that will correlate with each chapter that we will discuss as well as 4-5 new
vocabulary words that we will go over for later acitivities. After we are done discussing that chapter we
will break up into stations, some will go to computer time and work on studying vocabulary cards on
quizlet while others will do a short kahoot quiz over the chapter we all read together on the class set of
ipads.
Estimated The time duration is something you do have to be flexible with in an early childhood classroom because
Duration:
kids are just learning to do all the things like comprehend books and reading. Because of this and
because all kids work at a different pace, I would allow them to have an hour (60 minutes) for all of it
and then when they are finished, if they finish early they can all choose an area to play in quietly while
everyone else finishes up their work.
Preparation What preparation is needed?
of materials The preparation time for this activity is minimal. I will make sure we have the book in our
and bookshelves or out on my chair so it is ready to go as soon as we go sit down. I will prepare the
environment kahoot quiz the day before we do it so that way it is done and ready to go when the children
get on it. I will also be sure to create a quizlet that every kid has access to so they can
create/edit and study their vocabulary words.
What materials will be used?
1. Winn-Dixie Book
2. Ipads
3. Computers
4. Kahoot website/app

How will the learning environment be set up?

We will have circle time on the rug with our white board easel with the questions and
vocabulary words on it. Our computers will be turned on and loaded to the quizlet sight and at
the tables our ipads will be laid out and ready for the kids to get on kahoot.

Instructional Procedures:
Before we get started on our activity, I will explain to the students the game plan for the next few days that way they
have an idea of what we will be doing and they can process what it is they will need to do to mentally get ready whether
that mean read ahead at home if they go that route or mentally prepare to use their listening ears while we are reading
the book so they can answer in class questions and their kahoot quiz questions.

First 10 minutes: Introductory activity- Students will review vocab words and make an educated guess on what they
think that word means

 Define the vocab words and what they really mean
 Break up into stations, computer area and table area (ipad area)

Differentiated Instructional Support: Give the students who are accelerated and ahead of everyone else a worksheet
that has sentences with fill in the blanks and see if they can plug in the right vocabulary word in the sentence.
Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the material:
Create time to work with the kids one on one who are struggling or maybe create more time during large group do break
it down even further what that chapter was about or what the vocabulary word means.
