Introduction to the Project

ATHENA is a funded project under the H2020–TWINN–20I5

Specific challenge: The specific challenge seeks to address networking gaps and deficiencies
between the research institutions of the low performing Member States and regions and
inter-nationally-leading counterparts at EU level.
Scope: Twinning aims at significantly strengthening a defined field of research in a particular
knowledge institution (a research active university or a public research organisation or a private
non-profit research organisation) by creating a link between this institution and at least two
internationally-leading research institutions in other Member States.

Twinning will:

1. Enhance the capacity of the linked institutions.

2. Help raise staff’s research profile as well as the one of the institutions involved.
Remote Sensing Science Center for Cultural Heritage–ATHENA

The Idea:

Cultural Heritage sector has always been facing a number of challenges which have been
increased by the European financial crisis (e.g. decrease of public budgets, urbanisation, and
technological changes).
Within this context, Cultural Heritage professionals are seeking to improve currently used
methodologies, to better understand, protect and valorise the common European past and
common identity.
“ATHENA aims to improve and expand the capabilities of collaboration between low-
performing and leading institutions, involving professionals dealing with remote sensing
technologies for the support of the Cultural Heritage sector”.

ATHENA Centre:

The ATHENA Centre is devoted to the development, introduction and systematic use of
advanced remote sensing science and technologies in the field of archaeology and Cultural
Heritage.
ATHENA is exploiting the current capabilities of the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT),
both in terms of capacity as well as of equipment, performing advance research and support to
the Cultural Heritage sector.
The Centre aims to be in close collaboration with both national as well international research
institutes and stakeholders, providing integrated remote sensing services and solutions in the
area of the Eastern Mediterranean.
The new perspectives on archaeological and cultural heritage in the region will position
ATHENA as a centre of knowledge and a standard lab in the field of Remote Sensing
Archaeology.

Consortium:

Cyprus University of Technology (CUT)

Remote Sensing and Geo-Environment Lab es-
tablished at the CUT is consisted of more than 40
researchers and is the largest research group at
the University. Its multidisciplinary personnel has
already established research expertise on Geo-
graphical Information Systems, Remote Sensing for
Cultural Heritage, archaeology, 3D modeling, risk
assessment, civil engineering and architecture, etc.
The Lab includes state-of-the-art equipment that
will be mobilized for the implementation of the
project.

amongst the participating partners of the project and beyond, depending on the nature of
each activity. The up to date accomplished training activities of the second year are hereunder
briefly described.

Workshop: Remote sensing for Cultural Heritage beyond Europe

The second workshop of the ATHENA project, entitled “Remote sensing for Cultural Heritage
beyond Europe”, has been successfully accomplished during the RSCy2017 International Confer-
ence in Cyprus. The workshop attracted several scientists dealing both with remote sensing and
Cultural Heritage protection, while interesting examples from areas beyond Europe have been
presented.

The workshop concluded with a discussion of the use, potential and specificities of remote sens-
ing techniques for the study of human past and management of cultural heritage in the various
regions of the world.

New Special Issue “Advances in Remote Sensing for Archaeological Heritage”

The ATHENA team participated in the Special Issue

“Advances in Remote Sensing for Archaeological Heritage”
Topic: The year 1999, when the launch of the first high resolution satellite sensor, IKONOS,
was achieved, consisted of a landmark for the, henceforth, development of remote sensing and
the ever-growing exploitation of its capabilities. During these 17 years, significant technological
improvements have been made, both in space sensors, as well as in other non-contact remote
sensing technologies, providing new tools for scientists to aid in archaeological research, as well
as to analyze built heritage monuments and sites.
This Special Issue invites research and review articles related to current and novel practices of
remote sensing and non-invasive investigation, analysis, and monitoring methods. The issue aims
to cover existing research and future trends of remote sensing, covering the full spectrum of
topics, techniques, time spans, and global applications, intended for archaeological heritage.
Therefore, research related to the following (but not exhaustive list) topics is encouraged:
■ Sentinel and Copernicus data
■ Big Data for heritage applications
■ Object recognition, pattern analysis and image processing
■ Data fusion from new remote sensing sensors
■ Satellite based estimation of impact of climate changes on cultural heritage sites
■ Unmanned aerial vehicles and low altitude platforms
■ Monuments and sites, environmental monitoring and risk assessment
■ Thermal image prospection
■ Shallow underwater prospection
■ Field spectroscopy and spectral libraries.

Athena was presented at the Researcher’s Night which was coordinated by Eratosthenes
Research Centre/Excelsior.
During this event the public had the opportunity to take part in research activities under the
guidance of the researchers, and at the same time to be informed for various scientific issues,
within a festive atmosphere, promoting the idea that researchers are “simple people”, whose
inclination is scientific curiosity and passion for research.
The main objective of the events organized by the local Research Promotion Foundation of
Cyprus (www.research.org.cy) was to strengthen the public image of researchers and of the
important role that they play within society, and at the same time to encourage young people to
follow professional careers in research.
