INTRODUCTION

Culturals play a very important role in Pragati every year. They are one of the
major attractions for the visitors coming to Pragati. During daytime when the
footfall is low, culturals pull the crowd to the ground making it viable for the stall
owners to put up their stalls. Thus, culturals have a very important part to play
for convincing the shopkeepers, luring people to the venue, and thus for the
overall success of Pragati as a rural marketing fair.

Culturals in Pragati include the competitions as well stage shows. Competitions

are again of different types: for kids, college students, housewives etc. Stage
shows are performed by different dance and music troops like Bongale group,
and other paid performances. Since last year, special schools like Blind school
have also been invited to put up performances, thus, helping Pragati to
contribute to a social cause.

Every year culturals promise to bring in not just more footfalls, but also
revenues through sponsorships of events. So before designing the events and
the complete framework for culturals of Pragati 2010, it is wise to know the
different aspects that it encapsulates and the expectations with respect to them.
This project gives an insight into the different dimensions of culturals of Pragati.
It also helps us to understand how culturals can be used more effectively for the
success of Pragati.
ASPECTS:
There are different aspects that encompass culturals. We need to understand them
clearly before conducting a research for the expectations regarding the cultural events.

The expectations can be divided into two main categories:

A. Schools, colleges and general public
B. Stall owners

A. SCHOOLS, COLLEGES AND GENERAL PUBLIC

1. Competitions: What are the different competitions being organized

2. Performances: What are the different stage shows being performed

3. Timings: What are their timings and what is their duration

4. Participants: Which competition is for whom

5. Judges: Whether or not the judges are experts in their fields

6. Fairness In Judgment: Whether or not the judgment will be fair

7. Stage Management And Conduction: The stage management should be

hassle free and non chaotic

8. Proper Information Regarding Rules And Regulations: Whether or not

complete and prior information is given about the rules and regulations of the
events

B. STALL OWNERS

1. Footfalls: Will the culturals benefit in increasing footfalls

2. Target Customers: Will the culturals bring their target customers to Pragati

3. Promotion of Shops: Will they help in promotion of their business

TARGET GROUPS:

We need to design the cultural events keeping in mind the target groups for
them. We’ll also conduct the research based on the same target.

The Target Groups for Pragati culturals are:

1. Parents
2. Schools (Management And Children)
3. Colleges (Management And Students)
4. Housewives
5. Stall Owners
EXPECTATIONS FROM CULTURALS

STALL OWNERS

The expectations of stall owners can be understood well. They can be listed as
following:

1. They want more footfalls of their target customers

2. They want better promotion of their business through cultural events.
3. They want events that can promote their stall and encourage people to come to
their stall.
4. They are also concerned that events don’t restrict the public near the stage and
competition area, and are such that public takes interest in viewing the stalls as
well.
5. They expect cultural events to bring more public during daytime.

SCHOOLS, COLLEGES AND GENERAL PUBLIC

We try to gauge the expectations of the other target groups through a questionnaire
which will be helpful for creating the complete framework for culturals.

REVELATIONS

Data collected from seniors, teachers and some visitors of last Pragati reveal the
following information:

1. Schools and colleges do not have any specific preference for types of
competitions, but they want competitions that are mentally intriguing and
challenging and help in showcasing the talents of students. For them most
important part is the intellectual growth of the students.

2. They prefer to have the competitions completed by evening so that students can
be sent safely to their homes.

3. Housewives prefer competitions during the daytime.

4. Choice of language for event and stage conduction is largely towards Kannada
for easier understanding.

5. Schools and colleges are encouraged to participate if provided with Event

Participation Certificates.

6. Schools prefer gifts as rewards while colleges prefer cash. Housewives do not
make any specific choice.

7. On the spot registrations give greater scope for participation, so they are also
preferred.

8. Kannada volunteers are preferred over English/Hindi speaking college students

for crowd management.
RECOMMENDATIONS:

Based on the above revelations, our group would recommend the following points
for designing the culturals of Pragati 2010:

1. A blend of competitions should be kept so that all types of participants can be

attracted.

2. Competitions should be so scheduled that they are completed by evening so

that both housewives and students can participate without any disturbance.

3. Competitions need to be grouped according to interest of people and should be

thus scheduled during day or evening. For e.g. dance programs should be kept
in the evening.

4. As February is quite hot and dusty in Harihar, sufficient arrangements should be

ensured for shade and drinking water.

5. Stage and event management should be done in Kannada so that locals also
take more interest in them. Volunteers for stage conduction have been coming
from nearby colleges for past years.
More volunteers should be called this year. Also we can enquire about
locals who may be interested in volunteering.

6. ON THE SPOT registrations have created lot of chaos during previous year’s
Pragati. The major reason is the difference in language which makes it difficult
to manage the crowd.
So On the spot registrations should be avoided. If kept, they should be
for limited number of events and there should be an upper limit on the
number of entries.

7. Kannada volunteers are required to manage the crowd especially for on the
spot registrations. So more volunteers should be called from colleges.

8. Participation certificates should be provided so that more registrations and

eventually more footfalls can be brought in.

9. Rewards should be preferred as gifts to avoid any dispute.

10. Instead of repeating the same competitions every year, some novelty should be
brought in to arouse the interest of people. The events where participations
have been very good, should not be changed.
11. More schools and colleges should be approached for greater awareness and
participation.

12. Culturals should be designed to bring in revenues. So this year culturals should
be so designed that they can persuade more shopkeepers to give sponsorships
for the events.
