BMW 2.0d (N47)
the first production diesel to more than 100 hp / |
After having replaced the cast iron engine blocks of all its 6 diesel cylinders with an aluminum
block, BMW does the same for its 4 cylinders which lose 17 kg. These are completely revised
versions, with a new cylinder head and complemented by a host of ingenious innovations.
Like those powered by the brand's new gasoline direct-injection engines, the latest diesel
models have electrical equipment that offloads the alternator during acceleration , charging it
as much as possible while decelerating, In addition, the engine is automatically stopped
during stopping in neutraland on manual transmission models, a tell-tale tells the driver
when the gearshift is optimal. The balance shafts rotate in needle bearings and the power
steering is electro-hydraulic, Thus, the standard consumption of the BMW 118d latest vintage
falls to 4.71 / 100 km.
The icing on the cake, this diesel can be equipped with a 2-stage regulated turbosurling for ...
150 kW, 204 hp!

Cylinder Block
The aluminum block with closed tablature and deep
skirt is cast according to the "Core package system"
process of Hydro Aluminum Alucast, just like that of
the Mercedes 320 CDI (OM 642). This process, using
siliceous sand molds bundled with @ pheno-urethane
binder, provides exceptional fatigue resistance that
exceeds even that of gray cast iron. Combined with 2
high-strength AlSi8Cu3 alloy and optimized heat
treatment, this casting system provides the new block
with the required strength for a 180 bar combustion
pressure.

Aluminum provides significant weight savings, even
compared to vermicular graphite cast iron (CGI). In this case the weight of the block is now 28 kg instead
of the 45 kg of the block gray cast iron (M47TU2). The aluminum alloy offers better thermal conductivity
and facilitates the manufacture of precision parts with complex shapes incorporating the support of
auxiliary bodies, water passages and oil pipes. Cast in the same metal as the cylinder heads, the aluminum
blocks avoid different expansion coefficients at the cylinder head gaskets
The cylinder spacing remains at 91 mm for a bore of 84 mm, despite dry jackets and an oblique cooling
channel pierced between the cylinders. The cold shirts are fitted into the pre-heated cylinder block. It
retracts during its cooling, enclosing the shirts and thus ensuring their immobilization,
