Specific heat of water :
is the amount of heat per unit mass required to rise the
temperature by one degree Celsius . the specific heat of
water is 1 calorie/gm •C=4.186joule/gm.c which is higher
than other common substance .the specific capacity (Cp)
of liquid water at room temperature and pressure
approximately 4.2J/g..C. this mean it takes 4.2 joule of
energy to rise 1 gram of water by 1 degree Celsius . this
actually quite large . the specific heat capacity of water
vapor at room temperature is also higher than most other
materials as a result ;water plays a very important role in
temperature regulation . the specific heat per unit gram
for water is much higher than that for metal .the grater
the materials specific heat ,the more energy must be
added to change its temperature .

Purpose:
The purpose of this experiment is to measure the specific
heat of water by electrical method .and learn use our
device to measure the specific heat of water .by adding
voltage from power supply and also the current from it
.put the water in calorimeter and linked by our power
supply.
Materials :
1-power supply .
2-thermometer .
3-multimeter .
4-stop watch
5-caolrimeter .
Description Equipment :
The calorimeter bowl that input the water inside
and also it is a waste in thermal insulation to
prevent the heat leak and also contains
thermometer to measure the temperature inside the
calorimeter .
Procedure :
1-find the mass of the empty calorimeter(mc).the put 150
gm water (mw=mass of water)
2-switch on the power supply and put voltage =8 volt
3-after that we wait for 2min.and switch off the power
supply then mixing the water to get an equilibrium
system.
4-use a clock or a stopwatch to keep track of the time .
every minute record the temperature reading on the
thermometer . continue doing this this for 10 minutes.
5- finally calculate the value of specific heat of water by
using equation below
1 𝑉𝑡𝐼
Cw=𝑚 [4.19∗∆𝑇 − 𝑚𝑐 𝐶𝐶 ]
𝑤

Where Cc is the specific heat of calorimeter

=0.215cal/gm..c, while mc and mw mass of calorimeter
and water respectively ,∆T=t final -t initial .
Calculation :
t=480 , V=8v
I=1.66 A , ∆T=31-23=8c
mc=69.7g , mw=151.1g

1 𝑉𝑡𝐼
Cp= 𝑚 [4.19∗∆𝑇 − 𝑚𝑐 𝐶𝐶 ]
𝑤

1 8∗480∗1.66
Cp=151.1 [ − 69.7 ∗ 0.215]
4.19∗8

=1.15 cal/gm.c

Result :

Variables Values Definition

mc 69.7 gm
mw 151.1 g
V 8v
I 1.66 A
∆T =31-23=8c
t 480 sec
Cw =1.15 cal/gm.c
Discussion :
1-define heat capacity ?
Heat capacity : is the amount of the temperature to be
required to rise the material temperature of 1.℃
2-caculate the specific heat of copper given that 204.75J
of energy raises the temperature of 15g .of copper from
25° 𝑡𝑜 60° ?
Solution : ∆𝑇 = 𝑇2 − 𝑇1 = 60 − 25 = 35℃
mass =15g Q=204.75 J
∆𝑄 204.75 𝐽
𝐶𝑃 = = = 0.39
𝑚∆𝑇 15 ∗ 35 𝑔. ℃
3-describe your analyses ? compare the value of specific
heat of water that you obtained practically , with
theoretical value ?
Solution : the theoretical specific heat of water is equal to
𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑜𝑟𝑖𝑒
1 and the practically result we obtained its equal
𝑔.℃
𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑜𝑟𝑖𝑒
to 1.15 so the difference between its equal to
𝑔.℃

|𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑜𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙−𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑙 |
Difference =|𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑜𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙+𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑙|/2 × 100

|1−1.15|
= |1+1.15|/2 × 100 = 13.9%
4-the grater the material specific heat capacity ,the more
energy must be added to change it is temperature?
