BHERI-BABAI DIVERSION MULTIPURPOSE PROJECT

PROGRESS UPTO FYSCAL YEAR 2074/75
1.Background
Bheri-Babai Diversion Multipurpose Project (BBDMP), located in Surkhet district of Karnali
Pradesh of Nepal, aims to divert 40 m3/s of water from Bheri River to Babai River to
irrigate 51,000 ha of agricultural land in Bardiya and Banke districts of Nepal and also to
generate 400GWH hydroelectric energy annually from a powerhouse with installed capacity
of 48MW. The project is conceptualised into three main components

 Water Diversion
 Generation of Hydropower
 Irrigation

The diversion component comprises

 Headworks
 Headrace Tunnel (HRT).
 Powerhouse

Geologically, the project area lies in the region occupied by the rocks of Siwalik Group. The
rocks present in the project area can be divided into the following units.

 Upper Siwaliks (US)

 Siwalik Mudstones (SM)
 Middle Siwaliks 'B' (MS 'B')
 Middle Siwaliks 'A' (MS 'A')
 Lower Siwaliks (LS)

The project shall be implemented component-wise. Considering the geology of the tunnel
alignment as well as associated technical difficulties, the HRT sub-component is being
implemented first. BBDMP has grouped the works under construction of HRT into contract No.
01/HRT/BBDMP.

The main work under the above mentioned contract is the construction of the HRT which is
about 12.2km long with a bored diameter of 5.06m and a final inner diameter of 4.2m. The HRT
is lined with 300mm thick precast concrete segments. In preparation of the TBM tunnelling
following works have been done.

 an access road of about 2km,

 a TBM platform including workshops and rotary muck dumping plant,
 a TBM entry portal,
 150m drill & blast starter tunnel,
 a precast segment factory,
 a crusher plant,
 Contractor’s/Engineer’s/Consultant’s camp/offices
1.Headrace Tunnel Excavtion and asscociated works
Inlet of the HRT is located at Ramghat & the outlet at Hattikhal of Bheri Ganga Municipality,
Surkhet District. The tunnel is being constructed using Robbins double shield hard rock tunnel
boring machine (TBM) from the outlet portal at Hattikhal.
5507.8m of TBM tunnel was excavated during FY 074/75. Cumulatively 5658.5m (46.30%) of
headrace tunnel, including 150.7m of DBM tunnel, has been excavated. Monthly TBM
excavation progress is presented in the table below. A daily maximum excavation of 52.88m was
recorded on 18 April 2018 and maximum monthly excavation of 1001.06m was achieved in
April 2018.

The planned progress of the headdress tunnel was 4216.56 m at the end of F.Y. 074/075. It can
be seen from the table above, the cumulative excavation progress is ahead of the planned
progress.

Erection of segment rings was carried out simultaneously with the TBM. Following erection of
segment rings, pea gravel was blown into the annular space between the rings and the excavated
rock surface. After erection of segment rings and backfilling of the pea gravel, mortar backfilling
in the annular space under the invert segments. Pea gravel grouting was carried out from the
grouting units located on Deck # 4 and Deck # 22 of the TBM trailing back-up system.

With a view to assess the rock condition ahead of the tunnel face in the Bheri Thrust Zone
(ch.5+900 to ch.6+300), the Contractor has employed Horizontal Sonic Profiling (HSP) method
of geophysical investigation. The first HSP test was carried out on 25 June 2018 at ch.5+212.
About 1000m of the tunnel length is planned to be investigated using the HSP method. As at the
end of the F.Y. 074/75, 533m of the tunnel has been investigated using the HSP method.

1.Precast Concrete Segments Production

Production of hexagonal honeycomb shaped precast concrete segments was commenced on 3
August 2017 using 7 sets of segment moulds –4 sets of Type 1 and 3 sets of Type 2. strength of
the segment concrete cubes sampled and tested consistently meet the specification requirements
for M50 concrete.
A total of 20340 segments have been produced during the F.Y. 074/75 which is 58.85% of the
total requirement. Monthly production of the precast concrete segments is as shown in the table
below.

दातृष्ट्नकायका प्राष्ट्वष्ट्धकहरुिँग पैिाको ष्ट्मलेमतोमा ष्ट्नमाश ण कायश
गराएका कारण राज्यको अरबौिं रकम दु रुपयोग भएको प्रमाष्ट्णत

ष्ट्ििंचाई ष्ट्वभागका एक अष्ट्धकारीका अनुिार ठे केदारले नहर
ष्ट्नमाश णमा तोष्ट्कएको गु णस्तरको ष्ट्िमेन्ट लगायतका ष्ट्नमाश ण
िामग्री प्रयोग गरे नगरे को िुपरष्ट्भजन गने काम कन्सलटे न्सीको

इआरएमिीले क्वाष्ट्लटी चेक गनशका लाष्ट्ग आयोजनािँग िम्झौता
गदाश ष्ट्वज्ञ इन्ष्टजीनीयरलाई ष्ट्टमष्ट्लिरको नेतृत्वमा क्वाष्ट्लटी कन्टि ोल
इन्ष्टजीनीयर, कन्ष्टरिक्सन म्यानेजमेन्ट इन्ष्टजीनीयर र िपोष्ट्टशङका लाष्ट्ग
अरु इन्ष्टजीनीयर र िबइन्ष्टजीनीयर िमेत १० जना भन्दा बढी
हरबखत िुपरष्ट्भजनका लाष्ट्ग राख्ने भनेको छ ।

िाढे बषशको अवष्ट्धमा अष्ट्धकािं र् िमय १ जना इन्ष्टजीनीयर
रामप्रिाद यादवलाई मात्र िुपरष्ट्भजनका लाष्ट्ग राखेर ९ जनालाई
राख्दै नराखी आयोजनाबाट एक जनाबराबर माष्ट्िक १ लाख
५० हजारबराबरको तलव कन्सलटे न्सीका ििंचालक उद्धव
चौलागाईले तिालीन आयोजना प्रमुख ष्ट्दलीप काकी र
त्यिपष्ट्छका रमेर्कुमार बस्नेतिँग ष्ट्मलेर भोजन गरे का कारण
िुपरष्ट्भजन नभएकाले नहर भत्किन पुग्दा १४ अबश भन्दा बढीको
ष्ट्िक्टा आयोजना अन्योलमा परे को छ ।

ष्ट्िक्टाका आयोजना प्रमुखिँग ष्ट्मलेर इआरएमिी कन्सलटे न्सीले

िुपरष्ट्भजनका लाष्ट्ग िम्झौता अनुिार राख्नुपने जनर्त्कि

अरुणकुमार चौधरी लगायतका इन्ष्टजीनीयरहरुलाई १–१ लाखका

र्जी काम गने इआरएमिीलाई परामर्शको ठे क्का ष्ट्दिंदै गए ४०
