Traffic Survey Report 2016

I. NAME OF THE REPORT

Road Inventory and Traffic Volume Count Survey of R. Magsaysay - F. Ma.

Guerrero St. intersection

II. PURPOSE OF THE REPORT

This report aims to attain the following objectives:

 Present the physical characteristics of the intersection at the time of survey;

 Provide information about the number and movement of vehicles through the
intersection; and
 Discuss the findings of data collection and the methodology applied from the road
inventory survey and traffic volume survey.

III. DESCRIPTION OF THE SURVEY AREA

3.1. Location

The survey was conducted at the intersection of R. Magsaysay Avenue and F. Ma.
Guerrero St. located within the University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City.
The intersection was bounded by the International Center on the Northeast, Romulo
Hall on the Southeast, and Bocobo Hall on the Southwest, as shown in the following
figure.

3.2. Date and Time of Survey

The survey was carried out on Monday, 5 September, 2016 from 4:00PM to 6:00PM.

3.3. Weather

A sunny/ bright weather was experienced during the conduct of the survey.

3.4. Traffic Condition

 The intersection is commonly traversed by “Ikot Jeepneys” going northward along

F. Ma. Guerrero St. and Jeepneys going to and from Katipunan Avenue, which
uses the gate located along Magsaysay Ave.
 The campus had no classes on Mondays (except for special classes/graduate
classes), therefore, the count of private vehicles (used by students/faculty) may
be less compared to other weekdays.
 Medium trucks (delivery trucks) and large trucks are not banned within the
campus, thus some may pass in this intersection.
 Continuous flow of traffic along Magsaysay Ave. was observed during the survey,
which is presumed to be caused by the proximity of the Campus Entrance/Exit
Portal for vehicles going to/from Katipunan (East of the intersection).
Furthermore, during the survey, the sticker system was observed to be not strictly
implemented for this gate.

V. METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION

5.1. List of Surveyors and Responsibilities on-site

Joanne Marie Parafina - Volume Count / Inventory Surveyor

Maricar Rabonza - Volume Count / Inventory Surveyor
Emman Rodriguez - Volume Count / Inventory Surveyor ; Timer
Drexler Sibal - Volume Count / Inventory Surveyor
Anne Sibayan - Volume Count / Inventory Surveyor
Niki Jon Tolentino - Volume Count / Inventory Surveyor

5.2. Road Inventory - Data Collection

Surveyors looked into the current conditions of the road by measuring and taking
into account all nearby landmarks, signposts, lamps and other objects that might
have an impact on the traffic in the area. Furthermore, the dimensions of the
intersection were measured using a surveyor’s wheel. Photos were taken on-site
for selected road inventory items. A scaled drawing of the road intersection’s plan
view is then produced in a CAD software.

5.3. Traffic Volume Count - Data Collection

A total of 12 traffic movements was observed at the intersection. Each movement

was assigned a letter from A to L. ‘Manual tallying’ is the method chosen to count
the number of vehicles in each specified intersection movement. A vehicle
classification count field sheet was used by the surveyors.

VI. ANALYSIS

6.1. Analysis of Road Inventory Data

Table 1. Description and Findings

Physical Remarks
Characteristics

Road R. Magsaysay Avenue is overlain by concrete while F. Maria Guerrero

St. is overlain by asphalt. R. Magsaysay Avenue is of much newer
construction than F. Ma. Guerrero. There are humps in both roads to
prevent vehicles in going high speeds.

Sidewalk R. Magsaysay Avenue, due to its recent reblocking, has better sidewalk
condition than along F. Ma. Guerrero. F. Ma. Guerrero on the other hand
has cracked sidewalk. Most of the sidewalks are 1.5 meters in width, but
the cracked sidewalks are 1.2-1.3 meters wide.
Wheelchair access ramps found along R. Magsaysay Avenue are
observed to be in good condition. There are no similar facilities in the F.
Ma. Guerrero St. side.

Traffic Survey Report 2016

Road Markings Both have pedestrian crosswalks made of paint, a material which tends
to deteriorate easily. Sidewalk curbs are not painted, visibility at night
may be a potential hazard. Furthermore, there are no intersection box
markings.

Road Signages Road Signages marking the streets and nearby buildings (Romulo Hall,
Bocobo Hall) are visible. A directional sign for the University Hotel is also
seen at the intersection.

Service There are four manholes, three of them located in the intersection and
Provisions one in the F. Ma. Guerrero street just a few meters away from the
intersection. All manholes are covered in good condition and are not
considered as hazard to vehicles.

6.2. Analysis of Traffic Volume Count Data

 Going north, majority of the vehicles come from the south, along F.
Guerrero St. Jeepneys and private cars are the vehicles which mainly use
the intersection. Furthermore, compared to other directions, the most
number of vehicles use the intersection toward this direction.

 Going east, main component of the volume of the vehicles come from the
west, along Magsaysay Ave. This volume is mainly consist of cars and
taxis.

 Going south, majority of the vehicles come from the east, along
Magsaysay Ave. Private cars and taxis are the vehicles which mainly use
the intersection.

 Going west, main component of the volume of the vehicles come from the
east, along Magsaysay Ave. This volume is mainly consist of cars and
taxis.

 Evidently, passenger cars, presumed to be used by the university

community, mainly use the intersection, either to navigate within the
university or use it as a shortcut to other main roads.
