What’s appropriate
❄ Learning more about your gift’s recipients and their preferences. It’s OK if you’re unsure and
have to check with colleagues or human resources personnel. Gifts that are tailored to personal
tastes pay dividends in loyalty, corporate gift experts say.
❄ Avoiding seasonal overload by giving gifts out either just before Thanksgiving or after the
holidays in January. This is an emerging trend, but trust the experts maintaining that it’s not only
appropriate — it makes the gift resonate more.
❄ Presenting presents to business clients comes highly recommended, and those in the corporate
gift industry even say it’s acceptable to have the gifts differ in cost and value than those given to a
company’s employees.

❄ Gifting nuts or other food that people can have serious allergies to — if it may be a problem,
skip it; also avoid goods that containing high levels of sugar when someone might be diabetic.
❄ Alcohol — it’s not always inappropriate, but companies have to know when to hold off.
Businesses need to consider employees’ possible histories of alcohol abuse or adherence to
religions that forbid it, according to those in the corporate gift industry.
❄ Playing favorites isn’t cool. Giving gifts around wintry holiday celebrations that are attached
to some conditional basis or are otherwise reflective of employee performance are just ill-advised.

❄ The IRS has different rules for the taxes that it’s best to stay conscious of even during
the happiest time of the year. Companies can possibly deduct a gift valued up to $75.
Over a certain benchmark, gifts to employees have to be reported as income.
❄ A growing trend in corporate gifts is philanthropic donations instead of something

material. Placing donations in someone’s name goes over well with millennials, in
particular, but make sure it’s something everyone can agree on — not a donation to
a religious organization or a political cause, gift gurus say. And, related to the last
