国阵首个唱反对赌球合法化成员党·民政反对赌球合法化
民政党反对赌球合法化，成为国阵第一个反对政府颁发
赌球执照的成员党。
民政党主席丹斯里许子根今日（周六，6月19日）在民
政党总部主持中委会後，在记者会上宣布，民政党中委会一
致通过反对赌球合法化，同时赞同政府暂时不发赌球执照。
他强调，民政党十分关注赌博对社会所带来的影响，尤
其是年轻族群。
因此，他说，民政党认同政府的决定，暂时不正式发赌
球执照给爱胜阁公司。
他认为，政府不应该为国人开拓更多的赌博场所，而是
收集民众的意见和心声，再分析赌球合法化的後遗症。
“赌博将引起许多社会问题，它将给人民带来困苦，也
影响正确的社会道德观。”

霹雳民政党主席拿督郑可扬吁请政府，在此阶段暂时不
要将赌球活动合法化。
也是霹雳州务大臣顾问的他认为，一旦政府发出赌球准
证给有关集团，无疑是鼓励非回教徒赌博，进而造成社会问
题。
他说，如果政府合法化赌球准证，赌博活动将涉及财务
问题，一旦赌徒睹输钱，将可能会怪罪政府，因此他促请政
府暂时不要让赌球合法化。

民青团全国署理总团长胡栋强今日针对民政党中委会正
式表态反对赌球合法化一事，发表文告时表示全力支持党中
央的这项决定。
他说，民政党母体表态正式反对赌球合法化一再显示，
民政党虽然身为国阵一份子，却从来不做应声虫，只要符合
人民利益的事情，民政党领袖一定会通过国阵内部管道有效
的表达以及解决人民的问题。
就有如这个赌球课题，我们民青团与母体，从一开始就
立场鲜明和坚定，就是反对赌球合法化，因为，一旦合法化
之后，非但不能消灭非法的赌球活动，反而让这不健康的赌
博活动更加猖獗，社会问题也日益增多。
他说，如果说合法化赌球可以减少非法赌球，这其实
是自欺欺人的说法，因为，以万字票为例，已经合法化多
年，非法的地下万字仍然在市场上横行，这显示了，政府一
旦合法化赌球，也不能减少非法赌球活动。

KUALA LUMPUR: Gerakan is against gambling and betting,
said its president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon yesterday. He
said the party was concerned with the increasing number of
gambling activities in society, which was affecting students.
“It is right for the government to put on hold the legalisation
of sports betting as this might add more avenues for people
to gamble. We have to look at what is happening in a society
overtaken by gambling and betting, especially in creating
family problems.”

Gerakan deputy president Datuk Chang Ko Youn agreed on
rejection of licensing sports betting.
“As a matter of principle, we don’t agree with [the] licensing
of gambling,” Chang told The Malaysian Insider today.
However, he said that the government’s action in legalising
sports betting is understandable as the government was
losing revenue, particularly to overseas betting operators.
“The government will be responsible to make sure there is
no negative repercussion from legalising sports betting,” he
said, adding that Gerakan would keep a close watch on the
matter.

National Gerakan Youth deputy chief Oh Tong Keong in a
statement called on the Government to reconsider legalising
sports betting operations in Malaysia.
He said regulating sports betting operations would create
more unhealthy activities.
“Sports betting will not only encourage loan sharks to gain
more opportunity, it also causes family income to be spent
unnecessarily,” he added.
Following Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), Selayang City
Council (MPS) and Ampang Jaya City Council (MPAJ) to
freeze the sports betting license, Oh said MPPP should also
take similar steps.
“Instead of legalising sports betting, the government should
encourage more sports participation among the people for
the sake of unity.
“Let us look at the recent Thomas Cup tournament as a
good example. Malaysians regardless of race and religion
had joined hands together to cheer for our national team.
“We do not want Malaysians to be cheering for different
countries because of their bets on the different teams”.

Gerakan proposes automatic tax exemption for donations to all non-profit education institutions in the
party’s memorandum on the 10th Malaysia Plan (the 10th MP) to the government.
Gerakan Vice-President and Head of Central Economic Bureau Sdr Mah Siew Keong said the party’s
memorandum contains forward-looking, radical and inclusive recommendations and suggestions from
Gerakan for the 10th MP after having extensive consultation with various bodies and experts.
The party’s memorandum focuses on achieving the following objectives for Malaysia under the 10th
MP:
(A) Enhancing Talent and Human Capital Development:
i. automatic tax exemption for non-profit education and research institutions to strengthen the
capacity (funds, infrastructure and specialization) .
ii. recognizing Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) for the purpose of admission into public
universities and teaching colleges as part of the overall national strategy to halt brain drain.
iii. absorb all partially aided schools’ expenditure for maintenance and repairs as part of operating
expenditure (OpEx). This move would benefit SRJK(C), SRJK(T), mission schools as well as
Sekolah Agama Rakyat.
(B)  Generating Robust and Sustainable Growth:
i. cutting red tape by introducing a “one-in, one-out” rule whereby no new regulation is to be
brought in without other regulation being cut by a great amount.
ii. promoting local SMEs procurement by introducing an aspiration that at least 30% of
government contracts should be awarded to local SMEs via open tender, calling for open and
transparent tender for all government projects etc
(C)  Safeguarding Social Justice and Inclusiveness:
i. a specific strategy based on merits and needs must be formed to ensure access to quality
educational and employment opportunities for the 30% lowest household income-earners.
ii. providing incentives to encourage the private sector as well as NGOs.
(D)  Sustaining Ecological Balance and Quality of life:
i. promoting the radical concept GWB (General Well-Being) and not the mere growth of GDP as
a perquisite for a more holistic and ideal development.
ii. proposing the police to publish detailed local crime data statistics every month as well as
requiring the police to hold regular “beat meetings” so that the public can hold the police
accountable.
(E)  Advocating Good Governance & Integrity:
i. suggests having full online disclosures of all government spending and contracts and creating
a “right to data” so that certain government-held data can be requested and used by the
public;
ii. advocates opening up civil service recruitment to all Malaysians in line with the spirit of
1Malaysia by publishing job vacancies online in order to make civil service a 1Malaysia civil
service.
Meanwhile Gerakan Sabah,calls for the removal of the Cabotage Policy, adoption of the Open Sky
Policy, formulation of a workable and practical policy on foreign workers etc.

 The 3rd Vote Dilemma
Local Government elections were abolished in 1965
and the call to revive it was part of the DAP’s Manifesto
for the 12th General Elections. Since then, various
groups and non-government organizations (NGOs)
have been pushing Pakatan Rakyat controlled states
to revive the 3rd vote.
The question now is whether there should or should
not be local government elections.
“There must be an intellectual exchange of ideas
and views on the pros and cons of having Local
Government elections,” said SEDAR Institute
Chairman Sdr Mah Siew Keong.
He said the implications, consequences, energy and
money spent on campaigning should be thoroughly
considered, before our country opted for such a
course.
“Recently, there have been lots of public debates
on the subject. The third vote phenomenon has also
triggered many actions and reactions from various
political parties, non-governmental organizations
and the society at large,” he said in his welcoming
speech at a half-day roundtable discussion on
Local Government elections at Wawasan Open
University, Kuala Lumpur, recently. The event was
jointly organized by SEDAR Institute and Institute for
Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS).
Mah said certain political parties and non-governmental
organizations have advocated restoring the third vote
elections in Malaysia.
“From the outset, the subject appears to be relatively
straightforward but there is a host of concerns in
terms of practicality, feasibility and legality,” he said.
IDEAS president Tunku ’Abidin Muhriz, in his
opening remarks, stressed the importance of
“shedding light” on various angles relating to local
government elections, and getting the people
educated on issues of democratic representation
and participation.
During the first session, panelist Sdr Dr Chin Fook
Weng, a former Penang Municipal Councillor for 23
years, gave a historical account of how the council
was run during what he termed “the golden days.”
Derek Fernandez, a lawyer and an expert in Local
Government and Planning Law, spoke about the
various legal aspects that need to be considered and

possible ‘breakthroughs’ in the implementation of
Local Government elections.
He stressed that the principle ‘there should be no
taxation without representation’ is a congent reminder
on the need for a 3rd vote which is a is an essential
part of a growing modern democracy.
Andrew Khoo, a member of the Coalition for Good
Governance (CGG), who was a panelist during the
second session , , spoke on the need to encourage
and instill good democratic practices as part of the
reforms of the voting system in Malaysia.
“The idea is to ensure a thriving healthy democracy
and maintaining basic rights of the people to vote for
candidates who can perform and vote out those who
cannot discharge their public duties,” Khoo said.
Former Penang Municipal Councillor, Dr Goh Ban
Lee urged the participants to read some of the
reports pertaining to local government elections in
detail so as to understand why there are hindrances
and technical or political difficulties.
The first session was moderated by SEDAR Institute’s
director-general Khaw Veon Szu while the second
session’s moderator was Wan Saiful Wan Jan, the
chief executive of IDEAS.
Overall, from the feedback received, the participants
felt that it was a good event as the opportunity to
engage in a closed door session with various NGOs,
government officials, members of civil societies and
councillors or former councillors regarding this issue
will assist increasing awareness and understanding
of local government elections.

Q: How do u feel since joining Gerakan 5 months’ ago?
A: I believe I have finally found a home - Gerakan. There
are many challenges ahead, but no matter how difficult, I
will do my best to protect and serve the interests of my
constituents. Cameron Highlands residents, in particular,
are facing land problems and I will strive to address the
problems. I want to plant the ‘Gerakan seeds’ in Cameron
Highlands.
No doubt, joining Gerakan has helped tremendously in
solving problems much easier and smoothly, compared to
the time when I was an Independent State Assemblyman
for Tanah Rata after winning the seat in the 2008 General
Elections.
Within 5 months after joining Gerakan, I have set up a
division and 6 branches in Tanah Rata. Initially, there were
mixed feelings as everything started from zero. Now I feel
it is not practical to fight alone but better to lead a team to
serve the people under the Gerakan’s flag.
Q: Before choosing to join Gerakan, what is your
consideration?
A: Frankly, before getting involved in the political arena,
I was in education line for 30 years, so I am used to the
Barisan Nasional government’s form of administration. I am
clear that I must be in the BN system in order to have a good
platform to serve the people better. Gerakan has a good
and efficient organization structure and is a component
party of the BN. This is why I join Gerakan.
Before the March 8, 2008 General Elections, most of the
farm land in Cameron Highlands are illegal. If I am still an
independent ADUN, I cannot effectively fight for the rights
of the residents there.

Q: After joining Gerakan, what are the differences of being
an independent ADUN and a Gerakan ADUN in terms of
serving the people?
A: As an independent ADUN you will face a lot of problems,
such as no proper channel to get local problems information,
you will not be invited to attend any dialogue or civil activities.
You will be facing pressure from political parties and this will
hamper your path to move forward.
But all these problems are settled after I joined Gerakan.
Generally speaking, my service to the constituents is now
smoother.
Q: Formerly, you were from the MCA, a Chinese-based
political party but Gerakan is a non-racial party. Will it make
a difference in your political ideology?
A: When I was a school headmaster and teacher, I worked
well with my multi-racial colleagues and students. Race is
not a problem to me. For me, I only care about the merits
and the results.
Actually, Gerakan is more close to my style in solving
problems, so there is nothing different with my political
ideology.
Q: How is the response on the ground regarding your new
party background?
A: When I join Gerakan, there were ‘some opposition and
resistance’ from some quarters who did not agree with my
move. The opposition parties had wanted me to join them.
Some MCA leaders in Cameron Highlands did not expect
me to join Gerakan.
But my choice to join Gerakan is in tandem with the wishes

加入民政党5个月后，请问您有何感想？ 在我做老师及校长期间，我一直面对不同种族的老师

民政党已有很好的组织架构，更何况民政党也是国阵
成员党之一，所以才毅然加入民政党。在308之前，金马仑
的农民地，大部分已是非法地。如果我还是独立人士或身
在反对党，我无法更有效地为他们服务和争取，对农民肯
定不是一件好事。
请问，您加入民政党后，在为民服务的层面上而言，是否
与独立议员身份进服务有所差别？怎样的差别？
身为独立议员，在为民服务上确实面对许多难题。例
如，我很难从政府部门获取民生的资料，任何有关民生问
题的集会，对话我都不被邀请参与。这导致我无从下手来
服务选民。再加上有些政党的打压和排挤，使到我步步维
艰。
在加入民政党之后，这些事情都有了三百六十度的转
变。虽然还有一些零星的阻碍，一般上我的工作还算顺
畅。

and addressing them without thinking of race

We cannot accept taunts such as “Apa Cina
Mahu?” (What do the Chinese want?) and

grateful” and “the government should revise policies
deemed favourable to the Chinese”.
After more than 52 years of Independence, we should
be asking: what Malaysians want? This question is
certainly more relevant. We should be moving forward
along non-racial lines and as a “Bangsa Malaysia.”
In fact, it is more pertinent to ask: Apa Anak Malaysia
Mahu?
Gerakan must not dance to the racial tune set by others,
instead Gerakan should reassert its non-racial political
approach by asking “Apa Anak Malaysia mahu?”
Gerakan must regain its rights and ability to master
political vocabulary and articulate political ideas that are
closer to the heart of the People like good governance,
social justice etc, and not to allow itself to be dictated or
stifled by others.
Gerakan deputy president Sdr Chang Ko Youn said:
It is high time for the BN leadership to “bite the bullet”
and work together as a team to address the Chinese
community’s woes and to regain their confidence and
support.
We don’t need uncalled for and racist remarks from
leaders like former Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk
Seri Mohd Khir Toyo, who had asked for a revision
of government policies deemed favourable to the
Chinese.
It is an extreme and vindictive remark that calls for
deprivation of fair and just treatment for all Malaysians
and is clearly against the concept of inclusiveness and
social justice advocated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri
Najib Tun Razak’s 1Malaysia leadership.
Gerakan vice-president Sdr A. Kohilan Pillay stressed:
By calling on the government to “punish” the Chinese
community it would do the PM and BN a disservice in
their attempt to regain the confidence and support of the
people of Selangor, especially the Chinese community.
This is a nonsensical and irresponsible statement by
the former Selangor MB.
Gerakan deputy secretary-general Sdr Liang Teck
Meng said: Gerakan slams Perkasa for yet another
irresponsible statement by stating that “the Chinese
voters in Sibu do not appreciate BN” during the Sibu
by-election campaign.
He wants BN leaders to distance themselves from
Perkasa as it is doing more harm than good to the BN
coalition.

Actually what an Anak Malaysia wants is simple and
straight forward, that is a Malaysian society where:
(i) Rule of law and constitution can be upheld;

(iii) Ecological balance and Quality of Life can be
sustained; and
(iv) Social Justice and inclusiveness can be
safeguarded.
BN should realize that giving ad hoc aid during by-
elections is not the answer to win support. BN must also
make substantial policy reforms to regain the people’s
trust and support. The immediate task for BN is to
condemn racist statements from individuals and groups
such as Perkasa and made it clear to them that BN will
not tolerate or accommodate racism and extremism, in
whatever form.

The era of the government telling the non-Malay voters
to be grateful to it is long gone.
Any ruling coalition which wants to stay in power should
take the initiative to resolve the problems facing the
people, instead of asking them the question, “What
more do you want?”
The Barisan Nasional (BN) government should
understand and meet the needs of the Chinese
community. Only then can it win the support of the
Chinese voters.
What the people want now is a clean and corruption-
free government, which takes care of the poor, ensures
that there is no hanky-panky in public project tenders,
enhances public security, and provides them with a roof
and basic infrastructure.
On the dissatisfaction among the Chinese that the
government is biased towards bumiputras in its policies,
Daim said Malays, too, are now educated, and should
be standing on their own feet unless they are lazy.

Chye berkata, sejak 8hb Mac 2008, Gerakan telah
menubuhkan 3 bahagian baru , dan telah mendapat
sambutan yang baik dan juga dapat memikat banyak
ahli etnik India menyertai Gerakan.
“Sementara itu, sejak Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri
Najib melancarkan beberapa dasar baru, rakyat
Pahang semakin yakin dan mengubah pandangan
terhadap BN. Justeru itu, saya yakin bahawa BN akan
mendapat sokongan rakyat sekira BN teruskan polisi
yang menguntungkan rakyat.”
Sementara itu, dengan penyertaan Sdr Ho Yip Kap
ke Gerakan, ia telah membantu Gerakan Pahang
memperluaskan kawasan perkhidmatan.
Sdr Dr Ng juga merupakan Ahli Dewan Undangan
Negeri bagi kawasan Ketari.
Sdr Dr Ng berpendapat bahawa Pahang merupakan
negeri yang dipimpin oleh BN, ini telah memberi
saluran untuk Gerakan menyampaikan mesej kerajaan

示，彭亨州是国阵执政的州属，因此民政党拥有“下

把政府利民政策传达给人民。

ialah ketidaksahan tanah kawasan perumahan. Beliau
akan terus mengadakan hubungan rapat dengan
pihak-pihak tertentu agar dapat melindungi hak-hak
rakyat sementara menyelesaikan masalah tersebut.
“Kita juga akan terus memberi perkidmatan kepada
rakyat KADUN Triang dengan melalui ahli Majlis
Perbandaran dan Ahli Majlis Daerah.”
Akhirnya, beliau berharap rakyat memberi sokongan
kepada Gerakan di pilihanraya umum akan datang
dengan mengundi calon Gerakan supaya Gerakan
dapat memberi perkhidmatan yang lebih sempurna
kepada rakyat.

议席，可惜只赢了吉打里州议席，无法顺利夺下属于
国阵黑区的直凉州选区。此外，我们也没有获得州行
政议员官职，因此造成无法参与州政府治州蓝图与策

“彭亨州几十年以来都面对非法住宅区的土地
问题，一直无法获得彻底的解决，这也是国阵政府最
棘手的挑战。因此，我将与有关当局保持密切合作，
尽力协助选民获得他们应有的福利与权益。至于直凉
区，我们将会通过县市议员为选民提供服务。”
黄恭才医生同志希望选民在下届大选大力支持民
政党，让民政党顺利赢取吉打里、直凉及金马仑丹那
拉打区州议席，及被委任州行政议员，以便能通过多
方位的管道给予选民更完善的服务。

semula kawasan pilihanraya Terengganu selama 30

mempunyai wakil rakyat dalam Undangan Negeri atau
Parlimen, tetapi Gerakan mempunyai hubungan erat
dengan organisasi tempatan.

Beliau memberitahu bahawa sekira SPR
membahagikan kawasan pilihanraya semula, Gerakan
pasti akan berjuang untuk bertanding di mana-mana
kawasan.
“Ini akan memberi ahli parti satu pentas untuk
berkhidmat kepada pengundi Terengganu.”
Sdr Yap berkata, Gerakan Terengganu ditubuh pada
tahun 1981. Semenjak 8hb Mac 2008, ia memainkan
peranan pembantu kepada BN untuk memantau dan
membantu perlaksaan dasar oleh Kerajaan supaya
kebajikan rakyat Terengganu dapat dipertahankan.
Parti juga mengadakan kegiatan-kegiatan seperti
kelas tarian, kelas nyanyian dan sebagainya untuk
mengeratkan hubungan ahli.
Mengenai kes kerajaan Terengganu merombak
portfolio lima Exco, Sdr Yap berpendapat ini tidak akan
memberi impak yang meluas kepada rakyat Negeri
Terangganu kerana pendekatan dan dasar kerajaan
negeri yang sudah banyak membawa manfaat kepada
warga Terengganu di bawah pimpinan Menteri Besar,
Dato’ Ahmad Said akan diteruskan.

 It is truly Malaysia when this beloved country was born,
its citizens are able to live in peaceful and harmonious
coexistence. Our country had faced numerous crisis
-- confrontation with Indonesia, May 13 racial riot,

recessions, and now race and religious ‘intolerance’.
We have Rukun Negara, NEP, Vision 2020, Bangsa
Malaysia and now we have 1 Malaysia to create the
spirit of being Malaysian.
All of this is to nurture and cement us together as
Malaysian.
In 1954, our first Prime Minister or Bapa Kemerdekaan
or even being called as Bapa Malaysia, Tunku
Abdul Rahman led a delegation to London to seek
independence for Malaya, but the trip proved to be
unfruitful.
The British were reluctant to grant independence
to Malaya at that time, using the excuse that there
needed to be evidence that the different races in
Malaya were able to work together and cooperate
before independence could be obtained.
Race relations was the core point at that time. Infact,
the founder of UMNO, Onn Jaafar, who was visionary
– had first mooted the idea of a multiracial party by
opening up UMNO to other race but UMNO members
at that time were not ready to accept this.
When this failed, Onn Jaafar decided to step down.
However, it was not all lost when Onn’s successor,
Tunku Abdul Rahman managed to find a way around
to address this issue – by forming a political alliance
with MCA and MIC called Alliance Party.
In his latest book, The Alliance Road to Independence,
Dr Joseph M. Fernando (whose earlier books included
“The Making of the Malayan Constitution” and “Federal
Constitution won wide acclaim”), has provided the first
detailed historical account of the Alliance struggle for
independence of the country.
Contrary to what earlier writings have suggested,
and is widely believed Fernando reveals that the
independence of the country was not given on a silver
platter by the British.
It was rather “the result of a concerted and sustained
political struggle pursued by the Alliance Party which
represented all the main races in the country”. All
races fought for independence.
Following the Alliance Party victory in 1955, Tunku
Abdul Rahman made another trip to London to
negotiate Malayan independence. 31 August 1957
was decided as the date for independence.

of Merdeka, have become familiar icons of Malaysian
independence. Infact he upheld the independence
social contract of a secular Malaysia with Islam as its
official religion.
On the occasion of his 80th birthday, Tunku stated
in the The Star newspaper of 9 February 1983 that
the “country has a multi-racial population with various
beliefs. Malaysia must continue as a secular State
with Islam as the official religion”.
In the same issue of The Star, Tunku Abdul Rahman
was supported by the third Malaysian Prime Minister,
Hussein Onn, who stated that the “nation can still be
functional as a secular state with Islam as the official
religion”.
The Pemasyhuran Kemerdekaan records Tunku’s
vision that this country should: “be forever a sovereign
democratic and independent State founded upon
the principles of liberty and justice and ever seeking
the welfare and happiness of its people and the
maintenance of a just peace among all nations”.
Some have argued that Bapa Malaysia Tunku Abdul
Rahman would have instinctively – convened and
preside over an inter-religious roundtable to end the
religious dispute if “Allah” controversy had arisen
during that time.
It was Tunku who had initiated the inter-religious
council in the early decades of nationhood to resolve
inter-racial differences and conflicts and promote inter-
racial understanding, goodwill and harmony.
After the May 13 racial riot, right minded and principled
politicans have come together to reduce politiking and
concentrate on development.

BOLEH LAND!?
NATIONALIST!?

They knew, the root cause to the May 13 incident was
the excessive politicking and our Bapa Pembangunan
Tun Abdul Razak took the initiative to minimise the
much politicised environment, extending the olive
branch to work with all political parties in country.
Tun Razak set up the Barisan Nasional or Nasional
Front on January 1, 1973 to replace the ruling
Alliance Party as well as increased the membership
of its parties and coalitions in an effort to establish
“Ketahanan Nasional” (National Strength) through
political stability.
It was due to his effort that Gerakan, which was an
opposition party and the ruling state government of
Penang that time became the founding member of
BN.
Is Malaysia still a boleh land after all? We have prided
ourselves in term of political stability, trumpeting to the
whole world about our success story but now some
have wondered whether we are still politically stable?
But we now have ‘cow head’, mosque sanctity being
violated and torching churches incidents.
There is so much politicking and unnecessary posturing
now and are we going back to the pre May 13 1969
political environment? What had gone wrong?
We boast of a harmonious race-relation, religious
tolerance and mutual respect but what had happened
recently showed that something had gone wrong. The
question is “what had gone wrong”? and can we afford
to continue like that?
Launching Ideas, a new think-tank set up to promote
democratic ideals, at the Tunku Abdul Rahman
Memorial recently, the veteran Umno leader Tengku
Razaleigh Hamzah has said that the original founding
ideals laid down by Malaysia’s first PM Tunku Abdul
Rahman had become warped and the “founder” would
not recognise today’s Malaysia because it has been

replaced by a domineering style of leadership with the
“cult of the great leader”.
“ I quote”, we have left it to deranged for too long…To
expect change from the incumbents is to expect, in
the Malay saying, the mice to repair the gourd…”Bagai

In this situation, as member of the party, I wondered
what role the party should play. What is the role of
Gerakan or do we still have a role to play?
We must go back to the basics of our founding father.
Go back to our constitutional struggle. We are a
social justice party. What has gone wrong? Are we
becoming too capitalist? Are we so embroiled in power
and position seeking that we miss the real meaning of
participating in politics.
I suggest that we go back to the basic of our Ideological
struggle as contained in Article 7 of our party
constitution. We should not allow people to abuse
democracy for political heritacy. We too must reform
and restructure ourselves or else we may become
redundant as well as irrelevant.
We must be committed towards building a stable
political environment in Malaysia.
Such stability can only come about through continued
commitment to our current long-tested system
of constitutional monarchy and parliamentary
democracy.
Malaysians must renew their pledge of commitment
towards this system and resist efforts aimed at its
replacement. Equally important, consultations as
a means of resolving conflict and differences must
continue to be built into our political culture.
Corollary, confrontation must be eschewed as an
instrument of conflict resolution.
As is the party’s ideology: Parti Gerakan has never
relented, and will never relent, in our struggle for a truly
Malaysian identity in a non-racial approach towards
the attainment of a united, secular and socially just
Malaysia. The forms and modes of struggle may vary
according to changing circumstances BUT we must
steadfastly remain truly NATIONALISTIC.
This was the line of our party’s founding fathers. It
remains our line to-day. It will be our line tomorrow.
We must continue to shoulder on this noble struggle
even after the the 2008 dismay. We must think and
act as Malaysian. SATU HATI.
