Chemical Compounds Defined

A chemical compound is a chemical combination of two or more elements that can normally be broken
down into simpler substances by chemical means and have properties different from those of its
component elements.

Types of Chemical Compounds

Ionic bonds are formed when two or more atoms of an element are joined together when one of the
elements gains or loses electrons. Covalent bonds are chemical bonds that form when two or more
atoms of an element share electrons. Metallic bonds are formed when metallic ions are attracted to the
electrons of another element.

Chemical compound
is a chemical substance composed of many identical molecules (or molecular entities) composed
of atoms from more than one element held together by chemical bonds.

Types
Molecules held together by covalent bonds
 May be homonuclear, that is, it consists of atoms of one chemical element, as
with oxygen (O2); or it may be heteronuclear, a chemical compound composed of more than
one element, as with water (H2O).

Ionic compounds held together by ionic bonds

 Ionic compounds containing hydrogen ions (H+) are classified as acids, and those containing
basic ions hydroxide (OH−) or oxide (O2−) are classified as bases.

Intermetallic compounds held together by Metallic bonds

 (also called an intermetallic compound, intermetallic alloy, ordered intermetallic alloy,
and a long-range-ordered alloy) is a type of metallic alloy that forms a solid-state
compound exhibiting defined stoichiometry and ordered crystal structure.

Certain complexes held together by coordinate Covalent bonds.

 consists of a central atom or ion, which is usually metallic and is called the coordination
Centre, and a surrounding array of bound molecules or ions, that are in turn known
as ligands or complexing agents

Examples of chemical compound

bm=isch&tbs=rimg:

1. Sodium chloride
 also known as salt (though sea salt also contains other chemical
salts), is an ionic compound with the chemical formula NaCl,
representing a 1:1 ratio of sodium and chloride ions.

Calcium oxide
 Commonly known as quicklime or burnt lime, is a widely used
chemical compound. It is a white, caustic, alkaline, crystalline
solid at room temperature.
2. Calcium carbonate
 is a chemical compound with the formula CaCO3.
 is the active ingredient in agricultural lime and is created when calcium ions in hard water react
with carbonate ions to create lime scale.

3. Aluminum sulfate
 is a chemical compound with the formula Al2(SO4)3. It is soluble in
water and is mainly used as a coagulating agent (promoting particle
collision by neutralizing charge) in the purification of drinking
water[3][4] and waste water treatment plants, and also in paper
manufacturing.

5.Iron(III) oxide
 Iron(III) oxide or ferric oxide is the inorganic compound with the
formula Fe2O3. It is one of the three main oxides of iron, the other
two being iron(II) oxide (FeO), which is rare, and iron(II,III) oxide
(Fe3O4), which also occurs naturally as the mineral magnetite.
