PME 801 Process Account

Cathy Hynes, Amy Sundher, Sarah Jordan, Vivian Cai

“Develop a Design/Problem Brief about the selected problem/issue, including the contextual
concerns, past solution concepts, and related literature that supports an understanding of the
problem and the proposed solution. You can focus the project on ANY topic - a problem of
practice you are all mutually interested in or something specific about CI, either works. The point
is to engage in a collaborative inquiry.”

Nov. 18 - Video Conference - What’sApp Notes

Keep links in? Are they too much information or add to the information already there?
Decided on keeping it with a small description with what it is about

Move Roles section up underneath Steps for procedure as it flows more naturally.

Contextual Concerns will follow the same order as our document so that it flows smoothly.

Will submit as PDF to allow for easier access for those reading it.

Action for end of project:

Will read through process account and project one more time by Monday.
Everyone will message on Whatsapp when it it has been read through and ready to go
Vivian will post Tuesday in PDF form for the group.

Nov 13 - 18 - What’sApp Notes

Check ins from team members about what is done, what still needs do be done

Reviewed the introduction and splitting it up into two: Introduction and “Inquiry Question”

Everyone is still good to meet Sunday to finalize the project.

Nov. 13 - Video Conference - What’sApp Notes

Reworded our question again as it was not open-ended

“How do protocols (agreed upon guidelines) help increase the effectiveness of CI?”

Referencing - can we all double check them to ensure they are correct and all APA

Related Literature? - we have embedded this literature in our sections on the contextual
concerns and the solutions so have decided this doesn’t need to be a section on it’s own. We
each need to go back and cite our ideas and where they came from to show these literature
connections
2

To do for this week:

Intro: Sarah/Vivian
Definitions: Vivian
Contextual Concerns: Amy
Conclusion: Cathy
-Everyone go through their sections and include in-text citations & add them to reference
section
-Add graphics in your own sections and intro
-proofread each section for errors or disconnect
- Vivian will go through project and do some final formatting

Next Meeting: 10:00 am PST/11:00 MST - Sunday

Nov 1 - 13 - Messaging - What’sApp Notes

Clarification of problems - is there too much overlap between Cathy and Amy?
- Decided it is okay as they are different enough and overlap will happen due to the topic
being the same. Overlap is okay and shows consistency
Concern about the wording of our question - it is an closed ended question, not allowing for an
open ended solution. Will review this Nov. 13
shared some resources (videos, protocols and links that might help for the different solutions)

Nov. 1 - Video Conference - What’sApp Notes

Have decided that Slides isn’t the way we want to go for organizing our final project due to the
amount of text.
Vivian is setting up a template in Google Docs that will we will add our part to. We will read each
other’s and meet in 10 days to organize, make suggestions and work on our draft.

We found our original problem too broad so we made it more specific:

New Inquiry Question: Do protocols (agreed upon guidelines) help increase the effectiveness of
CI?

Specific to Norms and Protocols

Intro will include more about what protocols are and why they are important for CI to work
effectively.

How has this supported our own professional learning?

We have started a new document for our project - there will be a page with each person’s name
and topic - we will add our ideas in (bullets, sentences, paragraphs). We will read each other’s
through the week to find overlap

Action for Next Meeting:

Post articles that will be useful
7

Type 1 - 2 notes under the article so we know what it is about or what is important about it for
our CI
Next Meeting start to work on step 3 - Analyzing Evidence -
Meet Nov. 13 - 7:00pm pst/8:00pm

Oct 29 - Nov. 1 - What’sApp Notes

Some difficulties with everyone seeing the slides that were set up for our final project
Communicated shared resources added to the document
Question about whether our topic is specific enough - will review on Nov. 1 at Video
Conference.
Clarification on some of the solutions to our problem - looked for advice from team to ensure the
solution was effective.

Oct. 28 - Video Conferencing Notes

Deeper learning?
This revolves around the process we have been talking about in our course
Austin’s butterfly
How do we get everyone to be accountable
Engaging students - do we want to revolve this around our CI process?

Inquiry Question: **How can a teacher implement a culture of CI in an elementary classroom to

create engagement to students?**
- Social Studies
- Involve students if possible but doesn’t need to be all in the classroom
- Look at student engagement before the process and how it would be after the
process
- Literature that supports it - can we each find some literature that supports using
CI in the classroom - if we can find some within subjects great, but if not general
is okay

Contextual Concerns
- Time - this is embedded in the other concerns
- Teacher understanding - Cathy
- Teacher and student buy in - Vivian

“What does a genuine collaborative learning culture look like? Are we there yet? If not, how can
we move beyond structural change and bring about this kind of deep cultural change? What are
the necessary conditions for establishing an authentic collaborative learning culture? How can
we evolve from an organization of individual learners to a true learning organization in which
knowledge is shared, developed and applied and practice is deprivatized? How can we build
networks beyond our own individual walls to embrace – and benefit from – a system-wide
collaborative learning culture? And how can we help ensure that the work of educators coming
together results not only in more knowledge, but also significantly improved practice in
classrooms?”

Action for next meeting:

➢ Each find literature to support CI in the classroom
➢ Each take some time to look closer at our contextual Concerns
➢ Meet Thursday night - 8:00 pm/7pm PDT
➢ Will do final project on Google Slides - Cathy will set up

Oct 21: Group Chat made on Whatsapp - Notes

Shared Google Doc made to brainstorm ideas for problem brief
9

● How can a leader implement a culture of collaborative inquiry in a work setting?

● How can we help staff see the collaborative inquiry process as valuable and not an “add
on”
● Are extroverts better collaborative partners vs introverts?
● How do we build trust/relationships before the team begins a collaborative inquiry?

A thought: we can use our burning questions however it is stated that we can engage in any
problem. Does anyone have a passion or a real life problem that we could support with?
