Army Vice Chief awards new heroes

Naval Station Felix Apolinario, Panacan, Davao City- Major General Romulo
C. Supapo AFP, Vice Commander of the Philippine Army will visit 10ID Headquarters
on Friday, October 15, 2010 to personally award the Special Financial Assistance (SFA)
to soldiers who were wounded or killed in action while performing their mission. Hailed
as new heroes, 7 soldiers and one CAFGU member, who will be represented by his
mother, will receive the SFA sourced from the President Social Fund.

Mrs. Luzviminda Sam-o, will receive the amount of P250,000.00 for his son’s
death. As member of the CAFGU Active Auxiliary, Harim Sam-o died on April 26, 2008
while defending members of indigenous cultural communities belonging to the
Dibabawon tribe from the attack of the communist New People’s Army. He belonged to
the 72nd Infantry Battalion.

Corporal Juvael A. Arpa was seriously wounded after he was hit by the explosion
of an improvised explosive device on January 29 last year in Paquibato District, Davao
City. Corporal Arpa was then with the 1003rd Infantry Brigade whose mission was to visit
ground troops deployed in Barangay Lumiad for community works. He will receive a
check amounting to P100,000.00.

Six other enlisted personnel will receive P50,000.00 for the minor injuries they
suffered in the performance of their duty.

Private First Class Bayan M. Guibar of the 39th Infantry Battalion was wounded in
an ambush staged by the NPA on May 5, 2008. For his gallantry in action, Pfc. Guibar
received the Military Merit Medal. Pfc. Larry L. Plana of the 25th Infantry Battalion was
slightly wounded by a shrapnel at his left shoulder and head during the encounter
against NPA extorting from the small miners in Sitio Susu Dalaga, Mt. Diwata, Monkayo,
Compostela Valley on November 27, 2008. Pfc. Eldefonso L. Aliperio Jr. of the 67th
Infantry Battalion was slightly wounded by the explosion of an improvised explosive
device at Sitio Macopa, Mahan-ub, Banganga, Davao Oriental on December 1, 2008.
Pfc Aliperio belonged to unit conducting pursuit operations against more or less 40 NPA
members who were causing trouble in the area.

Cpl. Danny M. Lumamba, Pfc. Bernabe C. Maghanoy, and Pfc. Ruel V. Ynion, all
belonging to the 67th Infantry Battalion, were slightly wounded during an encounter
against more or less 45 NPA members at Sitio Bisay, Barangay Batawan, Baganga,
Davao Oriental on June 14, 2009. Their sacrifices resulted to the recovery of several
anti-personnel mines and prevented the loss of many lives.
Enacted by the 8th Congress in 1990, Republic Act 6963 grants SFA and benefits
to the family of any police, military personnel, or fireman who is killed or wounded in
action in the line of duty. The SFA is granted in recognition to the sacrifices of the men
in uniform who risk their lives in service to the Filipino people.
