In this paper Maximum power point tracker battery charger is proposed in order to extract maximum
power from a photovoltaic panel to charge the battery. The output power of the PV system continuously
varies with change in irradiance and temperature to improve the efficiency of charger. The proposed
system have used Perturb & Observe (P&O) MPPT algorithm for the design and implementation. When
irradiance and temperature are constant or slowly varying, the P&O method tracks MPP steadily and
calculate the operating point at which maximum power is produced. In this method, the controller
provides the PWM signal to adjust the voltage, adjustment is done by converter and measures power, if
the power increases, further adjustments in that direction are tried until power no longer increases.

So we have small microcontroller that controls the lead acid battery charging process and also the
correct used of the lead-acid battery. The control algorithm executes the P&O maximum power point
tracking function allowing, according to solar irradiance, the transfer of maximum energy generated by
photovoltaic panel to the battery and increase the efficiency power transference in comparison to
systems that have not a MPPT (direct connection), reducing the size and the cost of the PV panel. From
the results it is expect that the charging process using the MPPT algorithm will be faster.

T.Halder “Charge Controller of Solar Photo-Voltaic Panel Fed (SPV) Battery”India international conference
on power electronics 2010

In this paper work is related to the proposal of novel design and simulation of a dc to dc switching
converter system suitable for charging a battery from a solar photo-voltaic (SPV) panel and a load
controller circuit which is necessary to disconnect the load from the battery when the voltage of the
battery falls below a certain value and to reconnect it again when battery charges. The load controller
circuit disconnects the load from the battery in case the former draws higher than normal current from
the battery. The charge controller section converts the varying voltage from the SPV panel to a constant
voltage, current limited power to change the battery along with temperature compensation of the
charging with constant voltage to ensure long life of the battery.

So it can be concluded that the Input is variable voltage, but output voltage remains more or less
constant at 14V. Thus the circuit with special closed loop control is well suited for design and
implementation in solar photovoltaic applications. It is completely free from greenhouse gasses,
pollution and potential conformist resource of power and it encourages the vow the energy coming from
the sun free of cost.
