Analysis
Learner Analysis

● The students who will completing this WebQuest have all different
learning styles. The students range from 504 plans to severe autism
nonverbal. The more severe students will be accompanied with a
paraprofessional. These students will be 7th graders. Most all the students
in the school will have health at least one quarter each year. The students
will be educated on internet safety and cyber issues they may come across.
(PSC 2.5, 2.6)

Context Analysis

● Class characteristics – This WEBQUEST will be used for my 7th grade

Health students. I see these students 53 minutes a day for 9 weeks. I
usually have around 31 students in a Health Class. Our school is not very
diverse but a large number of Autistic students who are in a small group
class all day but come to connections. (PSC 2.5)

● Technical considerations – HTMS is a very tech savvy school with not

many tech savvy teachers. We are working on becoming STEM certified
and we are fortunate to have a PTA Foundation whose main focus is
TECHNOLOGY. Last year I wrote a grant for 5 iPad mini’s for our PE
class and it was fulfilled within a week. (PSC 2.5).
HTMS has a high number of Autistic students which gives us access to a
wide variety of devices specific to the needs of those students. We use a
lot of video game based products to increase cardiovascular endurance and
movement. In the health room we use audio notetaking, behavior belts
(similar to fidget spinners) If our students need technology assistive
devices we enlist the support of our SSA or Adaptive Physical Education
teacher. Those teachers can get anything we need as long as it does not
cost too much. (PSC 3.4)

● Teacher characteristics – I love technology. I am comfortable using it but

I am not as comfortable having my students us it. I love using all types of
technology for my lessons but I need to step out of my comfort zone and
allow students to try all there is to offer. My only concern is internet
safety. Middle School students do not always make the best choice!
Taking the time to address this across all subject areas would be
beneficial.
● Standards – This project address the following Cobb County School
District Health Standards:
 H71e (Nutrition) Summarize foods in the food groups listing key
nutrients and daily servings for each.
 H71f (Nutrition) Compare fast food and healthy food choices on
nutritional intake for calories, fat, and sodium.
 H78c The learner will select a health-enhancing position and
support it with accurate information.
 H72c (Nutrition) Examine the influence various forms of media
(television, magazines, music, video) have on eating habits of
teenagers.
 H73d (Nutrition) Analyze food labels for nutrient and nutritional
claims
 H73g The learner will access valid health information from home,
school, and community.
 H73h The learner will determine the accessibility of products that
enhance health.
This project addresses the following NETS-S standards:
 Empowered Learner
 Digital Citizen
 Knowledge Constructor
 Computational Thinker
 Creative Communicator
Task Analysis

● Learning Objectives –
 The Students will analyze the influence of culture, media,
technology, and other factors on health.
 Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid health
information and health-promoting products and services.
 Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing
behaviors and reduce health risks.
 Essential Questions: What is in your WATER? Why is it
important to drink WATER? As a consumer, what should I look
for when buying/filling a bottle of water?
(PSC 2.1)

Design
Overview
WebQuest: Why that H2O?
Task:
Your body is 75% WATER. It is necessary to SURVIVE. You are on a mission
to find the BEST WATER for your body. What type of WATER do you
drink? On your mission you will be given 7 different types of WATER to dive
into. You will assume the role of: scientist, research/investigator, statistician and
reporter.
Instructional activities:

Step 1:
Start RESEARCHING the Importance of H2O.
Below are 2 very helpful sites to develop an understanding of what our body
needs and why?

 http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-
eating/in-depth/water/art-20044256
Step 2: Check out the following websites on the pH levels of the assigned water
types. Use your SCIENTIFIC ears/eyes and record your findings

 http://www.jasonswatersofteners.com/what-is-the-ideal-ph-for-drinking-
water/
*After you have checked out the websites VIEW video 1 and video 2 on the
LEFT side of the page. This will help you develop a good understanding on what
the water pH levels are and why.
Step 3: Use Walmart.com and Kroger.com to help research the cost of each
water type.
Step 4: Take all your findings and develop a Group (4) VoiceThread answering
all the blanks in the chart.

Project development through:

 VoiceThread

Details
Differentiation: (PSC 2.5)

 Content- The content will not need to be differentiated for students with
disabilities. The topic can be addressed the extent of the findings might
differ.
 Process- The process is clear and concise. If students need help with the
process I will print of the pages on paper so they can follow along on the
WebQuest.
 Product - Students with disabilities might not be able to figure out the
components of VoiceThread. I will provide students with the option of
presenting their findings through iMovie or PPT.
UD strategies (PSC 2.6):
1. Class Climate: I tried to develop at MDP that would engage my
student’s. My students have a lot of access to technology and they thrive
on self-directed learning. If my students think they are in control of their
learning they can product great work.
2. Delivery Method: I, personally, get bored with the same type of lecture
class every day. Delivering the importance of WATER and researching
what you put into your bodies in a fun and interactive way will spark
student involvement. Delivering the topic in multiple ways: student lead
and teacher lead.
Assignment type:

 Groups of 4 or less
What multimedia elements did you use? (PSC 2.6)

 YouTube
 VoiceThread
 Audio/Visual component’s
 PowerPoint

Development
The development process of “Why that H2O” was broken down into two pieces:
the LESSON and the technology to create the WebQuest.
First, I reflected back on past projects in class that needed to be more technology
rich. I narrowed it down to CPR and Essential Nutrients. This process took about
a week I finally decided on WATER because the importance of overall health was
larger.
The next step I took was I drew out what I wanted my WebQuest to look like.
This was a very rough draft but it helped me arrange my thoughts. All my
thoughts were on paper now I needed to figure out what program I was going to
use to create my WebQuest. This took a few hours of surfing the internet
researching all there was to offer. I am comfortable with Weebly so I chose wix.
I ended up choosing wix because I allows for visually appealing graphics and is
fun to personalize. This program was easier than Weebly.
Once I had my design and site decide it was time to play. I went through all I
learned in web page design and made sure I checked off as much as I could. I
decided to go with a “water” theme. I made sure each page was consistent with
my design and layout. I used graphics that I use in class to hammer home the
importance of H2O. When I look at the pages I wanted to add a graphic/video to
each page to keep the student’s engaged.
The finalizing stage. I must of published and saved a million times. This process
took forever. I had students and adults give me comments on the visual aspect
and grammar aspect.

Implementation
I plan to implement this project in my 7th grade Health class this fall.
Resources I will need:

 Wifi passwords (if changed)

 7 Water bottle types
 VoiceThread tutorials
 iPads (charged) 6
 2 desk tops
 3 lap tops
What will I need prior to the lesson:

 Test all desktops and iPads for internet accessibility

 Buy 7 types of water bottles
What classroom management strategies:

 Reminder of Digital Citizenship – Internet Safety- Code of Conduct

 Visual assessment will be made on a daily basis. Teacher floating around
the room and asking “check point” questions to make sure students are
staying on track and completing work in a timely manner.
What’s the timeline for the WebQuest?

 This WebQuest will be completed over a week. Students will come to

class for 53 minutes each day. Ten minutes at the beginning of each class
will be focused on “check points”. I will let the students know where they
should be in their project to complete it on time.
What will students do at school vs. do at home?

 This project is designed to be completed all in class. If the students do not

complete all the “check points” they might need to work on it at home.
VoiceThread is a very easy program for students to work from home and
still provide a group project. Goal is not to work on it at home but they
have the ability to do so.
Will you work with or collaborate with other teachers?

 I will work with other Health teachers on this project but I will not work
with other subject areas – this time. I want to perfect my project then
learn how I can link it to the science classroom and math classroom.

Evaluation
Student Learning –
Product: Students will be expected to develop a VoiceThread presentation, with a
group, answering the questions addressed. The process of the Project will engage
students to take on the roles of investigator, reporter, and researcher to develop
the findings.
Self-Assessment/Peer-Assessment:

 Student’s will be given a paper to rate their self and peers on the effort
towards the final project. They will have a scale of 1-5. 1 = did not
contribute anything to project. 5= carried their weight and provide a great
amount of help towards the project.
Assessment:
 Assessment will be provided as visually during the project and with a
rubric at the end of the final project.

Product Design –
How will I know if the project is designed WELL?

 I will be visually assessing the process the students are going through and
taking notes on areas I would change.
 I will be taking short video clips of the process the students are going
through to create the project-brainstorming, drafting, and developing. I
will use these clips to demonstrate for future classes my expectations –
good and bad. (PSC 2.6)
 Usability Test: I will test 4 students (a group). I will ask questions on each
component of the WebQuest.
o Are the directions clear?
o Do the links work?
o Are you able to download the rubrics and charts?
o Is it visually appealing?
o Do you think you gained any incite on “The importance of quality
H2O in your body”?

Reflection
Project Development – I learned a lot from this project. I have learned that
technology is difficult and fun at the same time. I have learned it does not take a
lot of time to create a WebQuest (when you have your ideas laid out). I have
learned that there are a lot of good quality WebQuest and some not so good ones.
I believe the visually aspect is a huge component in student engagement.
Providing the student’s with a detailed PROCESS will allow students to complete
the quest with little questions.
I decided to switch from WEEBLY to WIX for the WebQuest creation site. I was
very familiar with WEEBLY so I had to learn the basics but I was very pleased at
how user friendly WIX was.
Instructional Design –The WebQuest was designed from student driven research
on the WHYS of water choices and to bring awareness to cost and ingredients in
what they are drinking. I provided the students with basic videos on how water is
tested and the importance of alkaline water. Next time I will add a page/tab of
student projects and give students an example of past works. I think this will have
students motivated to create a better product then the past. I also will add a lab
component. I will set up a corner of my room and have all the water samples out
and provide the students with the pH drops so they can run the experiment
themselves. They can video their findings and embed into their VoiceThread.
Personal Growth – What did I learn? Yikes. I learned that I can do a lot more
with technology then I do and it does not take that much more time out of my
lesson planning. I also learned how much I rely on YouTube for tutorials on
audio/video/coding. If this type of technology was not assessable I would have
thrown my computer out the window. Now I know how to create many different
multimedia projects and the time is minimal. I have grown so much confidence in
Technology. I cannot wait to coach my peers into how to engage more student
learning and assessments.
For Others – Chose your topic/project from something that you
LOVE/PASSIONATE about. It makes all the headaches of learning technology
programs worth it. Pick your program early on – I love WIX now! Be
adventurous and be willing to fail. Your peers offer great help especially when
they are not in your subject area.
