LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 9

Section and Time: Date:

Learning Level 9
Competency Explain how the structure of the carbon atom affects the type of bonds it
forms; S9MT-IIg-17 Quarter 2

Learning Week 7
Objectives Knowledge: Identify the properties of common organic compounds No.
Skills: Observe the properties of common organic compounds
Day 3-4
Attitudes: Relate the properties to their uses

Topic Properties of Common Organic Compounds Duration: 120

min (two
meetings
Resources Needed LM, TG, materials needed for the activity(refer to LM.p.133)

PROCEDURE:
Element of
Suggested Activities
the Plan
Awareness Word Wall (Activating Prior Knowledge)
Ask each student to choose a word from the vocabulary list below.
a. Phase of matter
b. viscosity
c. volatility
d. flammability
Have the students create signs to be displayed at the four corners of the classroom in which:
a. The word is written in letters large enough to read while sitting at their desk
b. The meaning is conveyed using words, pictures, or “props” in a way that is meaningful to
all students.
Activity 1. Have the students observe safety precautions on the conduct of the experiments. Have
them wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as lab gown, mask and goggles. Make
sure that each group has complete materials.
2. Ask the students to do the Activity 2-Properties of Common Organic Compounds (LM. p.
132-135)
Analysis 1. What are the properties of organic compounds?
2. Why is it important to know the properties of these kinds of organic compounds?
Abstraction 1. Properties of organic compounds:
a. Viscosity –is a measure of a liquid’s resistance to flow. If the viscosity is high the flow of
the liquid is low or the liquid is thick
b. Volatility - is the measure of the tendency of a compound to evaporate or turn into gaseous
state.
c. Flammability – is the measure of how easily a material burns.
2. It is important to have knowledge about the properties of organic compounds so people
will be aware of their behaviour, uses and effects to people.

Application Complete the table below with the correct information

Compounds Properties Uses
lubricating oil
Kerosene
ethyl alcohol
diesel oil
Assessment I. Identify the properties of organic compound being describe in each number by writing
each of the letter on the word blank provided to complete the answer:
___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ____ ___ ____ ____ ____
1. It is the measure of how easily a material burns.
___ ____ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ____ ____
2. It is the measure of a liquid resistance to flow.
___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ____ ___ ____
3. It is the measure of the tendency of a compound to evaporate or turn into gaseous state.

II Relate the properties of each compound to its uses by completing the chart below. One is
given to you as an example.
Compounds Properties Uses
lubricating oil viscous use to lubricate the parts of
machines and protect metals
for rusting
kerosene
ethyl alcohol
diesel oil

Assignment Ask the students to read about hydrocarbons and search for the uses of the following
compounds: methane, butane, octane, ethane, ethyne, propene and propyne.
