FACTORS AFFECTING ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN READING AND

WRITING SKILLS OF GRADE 7 & 8 STUDENTS

Introduction

The issue of students’ performance at schools has been of concern ever since

modern education was introduced. The rapid changes and growth development of

these days teenage of the new generation brought about by enhanced knowledge of

modern technology and social media. 0ne can only infer that issues on accessibility

and integration are major concerns, one can only infer that issues on accessibility

and integration are major concerns. More and more children are growing in the

midst of illiteracy and poverty due to a certain imbalance of educational

opportunities and prevailing among societies.

This makes students have limited time in reading and writing with their

parents-teachers and no time for revision, therefore, affecting their academic

performance. Many countries have come to realize that students are the heart of

educational process and that without good performance; more research conducted

in the same study, all innovations in education are doomed to failure. The students’

academic performance at schools has been of concern ever since modern education

was introduced. There is a wide dissatisfaction with the current situation of

schooling in many countries and parents come in for the share of the blame. This is

because majority of parents involve their children in garden and other domestic

work. And other results pertains to each respective stage were then analyzed in

terms of sibling-status, birth-order, family configuration and family size.


The quality of students’ academic performance remains of top priority for

educators. The Heart of any development effort of man is education. This is further

aggravated by the widening gap among different sectors of the society in terms of

addressing socio-economic and cultural diversities. And it is quite saddening to

know that the educational system has, ironically, fallen into the same trap.

Environment shapes behavior patterns of person in them, just as person’s influenced

their environment. Classroom activities are influenced and conditioned by internal

as well as external forces at school level, division level and beyond.

While it is true that the teachers structure learning opportunities and provide

instruction to the learners are the central focus of effecting influenced on the

achievement and behavior of students. However no amount of performance

teachers exerted will not be affected by internal factors that greatly enhance

dynamic effect to student’s attitudes toward studying. Despite the innovative

educational reforms launched by the Department of Education, (DepEd) still, the

quality of learning is not fully realized.

With the conflicting behaviors and status shown by the students toward

studying, the researcher got interested on giving some intervention on students

reading and writing activities to further develop their skills. Through this study, the

researcher will bridge the gap on poor reading and writing interest of students in

English despite the innovative teaching learning process and the effect on academic

performance.
Statement of the Problem

This study sought to determine the factors affecting students’ academic

performance in reading and writing and intervention activities during the school

year 2017 -2018. The following specific questions were answered:

1) What are the students’ profile and factors affecting on students’ academic

performance along: (a) personal attributes, (b) parental education & occupation,

(c) home environment, and (d) school environment?

2) What are the effect of socio-economic status, parental status, and educational

attainment of the parents, home environment and school environment on

students’ academic achievements in reading and writing skills in English?

3) What are the academic performance in reading and writing skills in English are

being developed by the Grade 7 & 8 students along: reading comprehension,

writing and accomplishing assignments, time spend for the research, time

management of study period, preparing for the test and focus on studying?

4) Is there a significant relationship on the students’ academic performance along:

(a) reading skills, and (b) writing skills?

5) What are the intervention activities conducted to enhance academic performance

in reading and writing skill of grade 7 and 8 students?

Assumptions

This study was premised on the following assumptions:

1. That the Grade 7 & 8 students developed study habits along reading

comprehension and writing skills in English vocabulary;


2. That there were factors obtaining among the Grade 7 & 8 students in terms of

their personal attributes, family background, learning facilities at home and

school environment;

3. That there were problems that hinder effective studying of the students along

their interest, health and facilities needed; and

4. That the academic performances of the students from first grading to third

grading were unsatisfactory.

Hypothesis

There is no significant difference between parental-structure, school

environment and the student academic performance in relation to the use of

intervention activities in reading and writing skills.

Significance of the Study

This study was considered important to the following:

 Students - The learner is considered the most powerful actor who gave meaning
to what has been taught in the teaching-learning process. Learners will be fully

understood by teachers on how they react on prevailing conditions that affect

their learning.

 Teachers - The key factor to successful teaching is the teacher, for he/she molds
the child’s educational growth. Appropriate reinforcement in teaching could be

done in order to suit the need of the learner.

 Parents - One of the functions of the parents is to monitor periodically the

activities of the students while they are enrolled in school. And since there is a

periodic monitoring of the students activity.


 Home - is a dwelling used as a permanent or semi-permanent residence for an
individual, family, household or several families in a tribe.

 DepEd Officials – The result of this study may be used as basis for evaluating the
curriculum and priorities of DepEd especially in achieving quality education.

 Future Researchers – Teachers with the same interest with the present study,

the findings and recommendations could be used as basis for their study.

 Researcher Herself – As a teacher and being responsible of providing quality


teaching to the students, findings will serve as baseline information in planning

the basic skills to be developed particularly on their reading-writing

performance.

 School Head – Most of the time school administrator asked some unrealistic

demands from teachers setting aside the prevailing condition that affect the

learning capacities of the students.

 Community – The environment specially the community is considered a vital

group that can exert more help and serves as a group that can protect and

guide our young individuals to be a good citizen.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study focused on the factors affecting academic performance and the

relationship of these factors to students’ performance in reading and writing in

English of Grade 7 & 8 students in Goa National High School, Division of Camarines

Sur during the school year 2017-2018. The selected ninety six (96) students, forty

seven from Grade 7 and forty nine from Grade 8 and was surveyed and investigate
the factors obtaining in them including home environmental, school environment,

problems/difficulties and socio-economic status that affect academic performance in

the 1st to 3rd grading grades of the students as their academic performance.
