GATE 2018 Counselling

There is no counselling for GATE 2018. Candidates will have to separately apply
for the M.Tech admissions. Candidates will have to apply to the IITs, register
separately through COAP and check their admission letter. NIT admissions are
through CCMT while other institutes and state universities have their own
admission process.

GATE COAP 2018

Starting 2017, IITs have designed a common offer acceptance portal (COAP) to
enable candidates to check heir admission letters at one place. All GATE 2018
qualified must apply to the IITs of their choice, register through COAP and check
the admission offer letters at GATE COAP. They must accept the offer that suits
them best and complete the admission formalities at the respective IIT.

GATE 2018 Answer Key

IIT Guwahati has announced the GATE 2018 official answer key for all papers and
sessions along with the corresponding question papers. Candidates can use the
given GATE answer key 2018 to cross check their answers and calculate their
probable scores. Candidates who have appeared for the GATE exam can now login
through GOAPS and check their recorded responses. The final answer key of
GATE 2018 is available from March 13, 2018. IIT Guwahati has announced the
same on February 14. The answer key of GATE 2018 have been announced by
leading coaching centres like GateForum, The GATE Academy, ACE Academy
and Made Easy after the conclusion of the test on each of the four dates.

GATE 2018 Paper Analysis

 The paper analysis of GATE 2018 will allow candidates to get an idea of the
difficulty levels of the test papers, weightage of the questions topic wise, a general
idea of the expected cutoffs. After each test paper of GATE 2018 is over, most of
the leading coaching centres like GateForum, The GATE Academy, Made Easy etc
has released the paper analysis giving details of the weightage of topics, difficulty
levels and more. The GATE exam analysis can be used by candidates to gauge their
performance in the test and check if they will be able to qualify.

GATE 2018 Exam Pattern

Candidates who are preparing for the exam can check the paper pattern of GATE
2018 to know the subjects, topics covered, marks distribution, duration of test from
the table given below:

 Mode of Examination: The exam is computer based Test (CBT)

 Duration of Examination: The exam is of 3 hours duration

 Number of Papers: There are 23 Papers. The candidates have to appear for the
examination as per their selected discipline.

 Common section: General Aptitude (GA) is a common section in all subjects

(papers).
 New Section: In XE paper, new section (H) - Atmospheric and Oceanic
Sciences has been included from the year 2017 onwards.

 Number of Questions: The exam consists of 65 questions including 10 questions

from General Aptitude.

 Total Marks: The test will be held for total of 100 Marks.

 Types of Questions: The exam consists of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)

and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions

 Design of Questions: The questions are designed to test the following abilities:
Recall, Comprehension, Application, Analysis and Synthesis

 Marks Carrying: The questions will have weightage of 1 and 2 marks

 Negative Marking - Yes, there is negative marking. 1/3 marks to be deducted for
incorrect responses in the questions carrying 1 mark. 2/3 marks to be deducted for
incorrect responses in the questions carrying a weightage of 2 marks. Therer is no
negative marking for NAT questions.

 Distribution of Questions in All Papers except AR, CY, EY, GG, MA, PH and
XL: Engineering Mathematics - 15% (15 Marks), Technical Questions - 70% (70
Marks), General Aptitude - 15% (15 Marks)

XL: Questions from Subject Concerned - 85% (85 Marks), General Aptitude - 15%

GATE 2018 Marking Scheme

General Aptitude (GA) Questions: GA section carries a weightage of total 15

marks. 5 questions carry 1 mark each and 5 questions carry 2 marks each.
 Question Papers other than GG, XE and XL: These papers contain 25 questions
carrying 1 mark each. 30 questions carry 2 marks each.

GG (Geology and Geophysics) Paper: The GG paper consists of 2 parts - Part

A and Part B.

 Part A is compulsory for all candidates. Part B consists of 2 sections: Geology

(Section 1) and Geophysics (Section 2). Candidates will have to attempt questions
from Part A and questions in either Section 1 or Section 2 of Part B.

 Part A consists of 25 questions and each question carries 1 mark. Both sections
(Section 1 and Section 2 ) of Part B consists of 30 questions each carrying 2 marks
each.

XE Paper (Engineering Sciences):

 Engineering Mathematics (Section A) is compulsory for all candidates and contains

11 questions carrying a total of 15 marks. 7 questions carry 1 mark each and 4
questions carry 2 marks each.

 Any 2 of XE sections from B to H – The section contains 22 questions. 9 questions

carry 1 mark each and 13 questions carry 2 marks each.

XL Paper (Life Sciences):

 Chemistry (Section P) is Compulsory for all candidates and contains 15 questions,

carrying a total of 25 marks. 5 questions carry 1 mark each and 10 questions carry 2
marks each.

 Any two of XL Sections Q to U: The section consists of 22 questions for a total of

35 marks. 9 questions carry 1 mark each and 13 questions carry 2 marks each.
GATE 2018 Syllabus

GATE 2018 is being held for 23 subjects (papers). The syllabus of GATE 2018 for
each branch is different. Candidates who are preparing for GATE 2018 must check
the detailed syllabus for the paper which they wish to appear for. It is a known fact
that the syllabus is broadly based on the topics covered in graduation. GATE 2018
syllabus for General Aptitude paper is common for all papers and based on verbal
& numerical ability.

NPCIL Recruitment through GATE

Application forms will be available tentatively within ten days of announcement of

Important Features for PSU Recruitment through GATE:

 The GATE scores will be the basis for shortlisting of the candidates.

 After shortlisting candidates may have to participate in a group discussion. Some

may even hold their entrance test like NTPC.

 All candidates will have to face a personal interview.
