Historia
Panamá Canal
The Panama Canal is an inter-oceanic route between the Caribbean Sea
and the Pacific Ocean that crosses the Isthmus of Panama at its narrowest
point, whose length is 65 km. There are locks at each end to raise ships to
the Lake Gatun, an artificial lake created to reduce the amount of work
required to excavate the channel, 26 meters above sea level, and then
descend them to the Pacific or Atlantic level.
In the year of 1514, Vasco Núñez de Balboa took the Spaniards to discover
the eastern Pacific, and, built a simple road that he used to haul his ships
from Santa Maria la Antigua del Darién on the Atlantic coast of Panama to
the bay of San Miguel and the South Sea (Pacific). This road was
approximately 300 to 400 miles (645 km) long, but it was soon abandoned.
