Unit Title: Functions Name: Breanna Rodriguez

Content Area: Building Functions Grade Level: Algebra 1
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
F-BF Build a function that models a relationship between two quantities. [For F.BF.1, 2, linear, exponential, and quadratic] 1. Write a
function that describes a relationship between two quantities. a. Determine an explicit expression, a recursive process, or steps for
calculation from a context. b. Combine standard function types using arithmetic operations. For example, build a function that models the
temperature of a cooling body by adding a constant function to a decaying exponential, and relate these functions to the model. 2. Write
arithmetic and geometric sequences both recursively and with an explicit formula, use them to model situations, and translate between the
two forms. Build new functions from existing functions. [Linear, exponential, quadratic, and absolute value; for F.BF.4a, linear only] 3.
Identify the effect on the graph of replacing f(x) by f(x) + k, kf(x), f(kx), and f(x + k) for specifc values of k (both positive and negative); fnd the
value of k given the graphs. Experiment with cases and illustrate an explanation of the effects on the graph using technology. Include
recognizing even and odd functions from their graphs and algebraic expressions for them. 4. Find inverse functions. a. Solve an equation of the
form f(x) = c for a simple function f that has an inverse and write an expression for the inverse.

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

What are common characteristics that is seen with a function?
How can the concept of functions be used in the real world?

Unit Summary:
In this unit the students will be learning everything there is to learn about functions. They will first learn what a function is and be able to define it, how to
determine if it is a function using the vertical and horizontal line tests. The students will also need to understand how to find the following: a) the vertex, b) max
or min c) the domain and range, d) the x and y intercepts. Students will also learn how to graph and determine what the domain and range of the function is.
They will also understand how functions will work in the real-world, and be able to provide examples of how functions work in the real world.
Assessment Plan:

Flashcards:
 The students will make flash cards that have
functions. (must have a minimum of 25 flash
cards)
 One side a graph, other side a function.

Quiz:
 Quiz would be on any type of vocabulary. (i.e
vertex, x-intercept, y-interepect)
