IN THE ISLAMIC WORLD

Overview:
The Award is destined to encourage and
stimulate interest in joint environmental action
in the Islamic world and openness to global
experiences in the protection of the environment
from an Islamic perspective, while working
towards preserving its resources and addressing
sustainable development issues in general,
through recognizing the merits of the efforts of
individuals and institutions concerned with the
management of natural resources for the benefit
of present and future generations alike.

Scope:
The Award is dedicated to outstanding works carried
out by individuals and public as well as private
institutions and organizations operating in the
various fields of the environment and sustainable
development, in recognition of their substantial
contributions to reconciling the environment and
socio-economic development through a holistic
and integrated approach that advances the 2030
Sustainable Development Goals, in line with the
Islamic principles calling for the sustainability
of the world’s resources to fulfill Man’s needs,
prosperity and lieutenancy on earth.
The Award is also aimed at consolidating and
adopting the broad concept of environmental

management in the Islamic world, which calls
for making good use of natural resources and
protecting them from depletion and pollution,
through instituting and disseminating the
principles and methods of sound environmental
governance in public, private and non-
governmental development sector institutions
and organizations in the Islamic world.
Other objectives include stepping up the efforts
to achieve human and environmental security,
improving the quality of life of Muslim peoples and
other peoples of the world, preserving the right of
all generations to clean environment, mobilizing
the efforts of the Ummah and institutions to
come up with scientific and practical innovative
solutions to current and future environmental
problems, and fostering scientific and legal
interaction at the global, regional and national
levels in addressing environment and sustainable
development issues and adapting them to the
reality of the Islamic world

Frequency:
The Award is granted every two years and the date
shall be determined when opening of nominations
is announced. The deadline for reception of
submissions shall also be announced. The Award
shall be presented at the opening session of the
Islamic Conference of Environment Ministers,
which is organized by the Islamic Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO),
in cooperation with the Organization of Islamic
Cooperation (OIC) and the General Authority of
Meteorology and Environmental Protection of
the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Award Higher
Committee may choose any other date.

Categories:
The Award of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for
Environmental Management in the Islamic World
covers five categories:
1. Best individual or collective research,
achievement or practice in the environment
and sustainable development, particularly
those addressing specific environmental
issues of concern to or may potentially benefit
the Islamic world.
2. Best practice in environment and sustainable
development projects or activities in the
public sector in the Member States.
3. Best practice in environment and sustainable
development projects or activities in the
private sector in the Member States.
4. Best leading practices or activities in the
environment and sustainable development in
non-governmental organizations that can be
replicated in the Member States.
5. Best environmentally-friendly Islamic city that
meets the conditions and commitments to
achieve environmental, social and economic
sustainability.

Award value (Edition 2018-2019):

The total of the Award value is estimated at US$
195,000 (One hundred and ninety five thousand
US dollars) in addition to shields and certificates.
The Award covers five categories from which
three winners will be selected in each category.

Eligibility Criteria:
Criteria for the best research or achievement
in the field of environment and sustainable
development:
• The importance of the subject or achievement
regarding the environment and sustainable
development.
• The scientific findings and the possibility to
build on them in the field of the environment
and sustainable development in the Member
States or beyond.

Criteria for the best practice in environment and

sustainable development projects or activities in
the public sector in the Member States:
• It should have a clear impact on the
environment and sustainable development in
their various fields both in terms of protection
of natural resources from depletion and
pollution and in terms of bringing about the
desired impact on the health, economic,
social and cultural environment, etc.
• It should be original and distinct from the
ordinary functions of public or specialized
institutions in any country, in such a way as
to be innovative in saving or safeguarding
the resources or improving developmental
outcomes through management methods,
used techniques etc.

Criteria for the best practice in environment and

sustainable development projects or activities in
the private sector in the Member States:
• It should have a clear impact on the
institution’s relation with the environment

 and sustainable development in their various
fields both in terms of protection of natural
resources from depletion and pollution, and
in terms of bringing about the desired impact
on the environmental rights of the institution
staff, customers etc.
• It should be innovative and reflective
of a special effort to trigger interest in
the environmental and developmental
dimension of management as well as the
sense of environmental citizenship within
the institution in terms of the sustainable
management of its functions.
• It should showcase the impact of practice on
the marketing of the institution products and
competitive edge as well as the satisfaction of
consumers and the staff of the institution.

Criteria for the best leading practices or activities

in the environment and sustainable development
in non-governmental organizations that can be
replicated in the Member States:
• It should have a clear impact on the
environment and sustainable development in
their various fields both in terms of protection
of natural resources from depletion and
pollution and in terms of bringing about the
desired impact on the health, economic,
social and cultural environment, etc.
• It should nurture the sense of entrepreneurship
and volunteering in citizens.
• It should have an impact on the local
administration and decision-making and help
foster environmental and developmental
partnership in the local community.

Nomination:
Participation shall be open to all stakeholders
involved in environmental management
and sustainable development (individuals,
groups, institutions, organizations, companies,
associations etc, be they public, private or
nongovernmental) from the Islamic countries.

An electronic platform is dedicated to the Award

for receiving the nominations and includes details
on nomination procedures and conditions. For

Criteria for the Islamic Green City Excellence Award

The selection of the candidate city for the Islamic
Green City Excellence Award is assessed on the
basis of specific criteria covering the following
major areas:
• Clean, Sustainable and Smart Transport;

• Green and Smart Buildings;

• Sustainable Energy Use and Conservation;

• Water and Wastewater Management and

Recycling;
• Waste Management and Recycling;

• Sustainable Land Management and Urban

Forestry;
• Ambient Air Quality and Acoustic Environment;

• Nature and Biodiversity Preservation;

• Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation.

Nomination Conditions:
• The research submitted should be published
and referred and must have been published
no more than five years prior to the
announcement of the Award.
• In case of collective work, the submission must
include a written consent of all participants,
and specify the name of the recipient to
whom the Award check should be issued.
• A written affidavit must be submitted stating
that the work has never won any other prizes.
• Only one nomination is allowed for each
submission.
• A report on the nominated work should be
attached to the submission using the template
developed to this end.
• Members of the jury may not nominate
themselves or their relatives during the
exercise of their mandate.
• Recipients may not present their submission
to the Award’s following edition. However,
they may present different submissions in
subsequent years.
• To be eligible for the Award, nominees
must possess legal capacity before the
announcement of the results.
• The Award theme must be in line with Islamic
values and principles.
• The Award may be granted to more than one
individual or institution.
• In the case of the death of an individual
winner, the Award may be presented to his/
her legal heirs.
