Heavy Duty Gas Turbine

Introduction & General Overview
Introduction & General Overview

A ‘Gas Turbine’ is a rotating

engine, able to continuously
convert thermal energy into
mechanical energy

 High specific power engine (light and  Output Power ranges from 5MW up to
powerful machines) about 500MW
 High speed rotating machine  Efficiency ranges from 25% to 40%
 Capable to drive electrical power  May use a wide variety of fuels (both gas
generators (GD = Generator Drive and liquid types)
applications) or pumps & compressors
 It may be operated continuously, without
(MD = Mechanical Drive applications)
any stop, up to one year

Gas Turbines Applications

High temperature (~500°C) and high specific flow of GT exhaust gases (>10kg/kW) are sent to a
heat recovery system to produce steam (~1kg/s steam are generated by 8÷10 kg/s gas).
The Steam Turbine (ST) produces about 50% of power compared with the Gas Turbine (GT).
STACK
RECOVERING BOILER
(HRSG)
The ST power is generated at “zero fuel
EXHAUST GAS consumption”, as the combustion occurs

only in the GT.

As a consequence, the combined cycle

 STEAM efficiency is about 1,5 times the efficiency

TURBINE of a GT simple cycle and at least 1,2
(ST) times the efficiency of an equivalent
