ABSTRACT
The present work aims to understand the phase transformations that occurred during the
preparation of Si-C and Si-C-B ceramics produced by Mechanical Alloying and
subsequent sintering by plasma, through the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) technique.
The compositions Si-50C (% at), Si-42.9C-19.1B (% -at) (SiC: B4C molar ratio of 8: 1)
and Si-33.3C-44.4B (% at .) (2: 1 SiC: B4C molar ratio) were prepared from elementary
powders and milled in a planetary ball mill. The powders were handled inside a glove
box under argon flow. The grinding was performed on a Fritsch P-5 planetary ball mill
using a 300 rpm spin speed and ball-to-powder weight ratio 5:1. The milling process of
powders Si-C was performed using hardened steel beads of 10 mm diameter and Si3N4
jar (225 mL) for a period of 17 hours, while the Si-CB powder milling process was
performed in stainless steel jar (225 ml) and hardened steel balls (19 mm in diameter)
for a period of 30 hours. The sintering step occurred via Spark Plasma Sintering heating
the samples to 1300ºC (50º / min), maintaining for 10 minutes and a pressure of 20
MPa. The X-ray diffraction results of the Si-50C powders indicate that the C peaks
disappeared after 1 hour of milling while the intensity of the major Si peak was
oscillated to the milling time of 17 hours. There was also variation in the lattice
parameter a with increasing grinding time. These effects were associated to the
obtainment of metastable structures with exothermic formation of the SiC compound
and possible obtaining of nanostructures during the milling. For the mixture of Si-C-B
powders it was possible to perform the indexing of the SiC and B4C phases in the
powder diffractograms. SEM images of both powder mixtures reveal the formation of
agglomerates and continuous fragmentation and rounding of the particles, caused by
grinding. The micrographs of the sintered samples presented different aspects between
the lighter and darker regions show in SEM, with possible formation of intragranular
structures and formation of composites such as SiC + C and SiC + B4C.
