Parent-Child Relationship

When reading the journal “Impact of parent-relationship on educational aspiration and

self-esteem of adolescents boys and girls” by Kehksha and Deoshree Akhouri, there are many

elements that make it very interesting to read. The purpose of this article is to show the negative

and positive effects that the parent-child relationship has on the adolescents. The audience the

journal was written towards was most likely a group of adults who are professionals in

researching the effects of the parent-child relationship. This specific journal talks about how

parents can have either a negative or positive impact on their children. Both the mother and

father do specific things that can affect boys and girls in different aspects. In the journal, the

specifics are explained and what categories affect the boys more and which affect the girls more

from each parent. Throughout the journal the use of well-detailed descriptions/information,

having separate specifics from the mother and father, and using credible sources help to make the

journal interesting and successful from beginning to end.

The authors’ use well detailed descriptions and background information to help enhance

their journal. In the journal the authors talk about how a person with high self-esteem thinks of

themselves as a person of worth, and a person with low self-esteem has a lack of respect for

themselves. Including this information into the journal helps enhance the quality of the journal

because it gives the audience the information about a person with low self-esteem and a person

with high self-esteem. Another example of the use of background information is, “Studies have

shown that parental love and permissiveness are related to high self-esteem, while parental

rejection, restrictiveness, and punitive parental discipline are associated with low self-esteem”

(Kehksha and Deoshree). By incorporating this information into the journal, it helps to show the

audience the positive and negative effects the parents can have on their children’s well-being.

Using specific information and results from both the mother and father help to make the

journal very informative. They begin by giving the results of the father’s relationship from the

study. “...girls get more protection... less object punishment from father in comparison with

boys…” (Kehksha and Deoshree). When including the results of the study, it helps the audience

to see what exactly affects the children, and it shows the positives and negatives from the

parent-child relationship. Later on in the journal they go on to talk about the mother’s

relationship with the children and those results from the study. The results of the study of the

mother-child relationship were that girls get more symbolic punishment, rejection, and object

punishment more than the boys do. Another result is that the boys get symbolic reward, love, and

object reward from their mothers than the girls. The use of this information helps to show what

the mother does that affects both boys and girls in a positive or negative way.

Finally, throughout the journal the author's use credible sources to help enhance the

entirety of the journal. One of the sources they use is the Parent-Child Relationship (PCRS). The

PCRS is a scale that was developed by Rao in 1989, and it contains 100 different items that are

categorized into ten dimensions. When including this into their research, it helps the audience to

see that there is a credible source that they are using for the information from the study. Another

source that is used throughout the journal is the Rosenberg Self-esteem Questionnaire. “This

scale was devised by Rosenberg (1965) consists of ten items in which half of the items are

positively worded and half were negatively worded” (Kehksha and Deoshree). By adding this

into the research, it shows the audience that they have a credible source that they used for the

questions that were asked to the children.

In conclusion, the authors’ used many different techniques to make the journal very

successful and interesting to read. The use of detailed descriptions, specific examples from both

mother and father, and credible sources helped to enhance the journal. If anyone wanted to learn

more about the impact the parent-child relationship has on the self esteem of adolescents, this

journal would be very helpful.
