SECTION I
LAUNCH INFORMATION
A. MISSION OBJECTIVES
The objective o f the ATLAS/AGENA launch vehicle was to inject the AGENA
and spacecraft into a 1 0 0 nautical mile circular parking orbit. The AGENA was then
to i n j e c t the spacecraft into a lunar transfer trajectory.
The primary objective of the Lunar Orbiter mission i s t o obtain topographic data
with regard t o the lunar surface for use i n the selection and confirmation of landing sites
for the Apollo mission. These flights w i l l also extend scientific knowledge of the moon's
surface, i t s size and shape, properties of i t s gravitational field, and lunar environmental
data.
Additional specific mission objectives o f the Lunar Orbiter program are a s follows:
1. Take moderate and high resolution photographs of the lunar surface covering
3 0 , 0 0 0 and 19,000 square kilometers respectively

C. SPACECRAFT CONFIGURATION
The Lunar Orbiter spacecraft (S/N 4) has a nominal weight o f 845 pounds and i s
designed t o be mounted within an aerodynamic nose shroud on top o f the ATLAS/AGENA
launch vehicle. During launch, the solar panels are folded under the spacecraft base
and the antennas are held against the side of the structure I n this configuration, the
spacecraft i s approximately 5 feet in diameter and 5 . 5 feet long. W i t h the solar
panels and antennas deployed, after injection into the translunar trajectory, the
maximum span i s increased t o approximately 1 8 . 5 feet along the antenna booms and 1 2
feet across the solar panels.

A. SPACECRAFT
A l l spacecraft systems were nominal during the countdown and l i f t o f f . The space-
craft telemetry signals were good from l i f t o f f u n t i l L O S (loss of signal). A l l spacecraft
systems were norninal at L O S . During i n i t i a l acquisition of the spacecraft by RIS
(range instrumentation ship) H . H . Arnold AGENA second burn was observed t o occur as
planned followed by separation at T + 4 0 minutes and 4 6 seconds (2006:48 G M T ) .
Antenna and solar panel deployments occurred as planned a t T + 4 3 minutes and 1 2
seconds. The switchover from mode 3 t o mode 4, allowing D S S 4 1 t o aquire the space-
craft, occurred at T-t-47 minutes and 2 2 seconds. D S S 5 1 also locked on the spacecraft
at t h i s time.
The only anomaly i n spacecraft operation, at t h i s time, i s failure of the star tracker
t o lock on Canopus. A lock on the moon however has been established and favorable
comparisons of high gain antenna patterns have given an optomistic outlook for the
success of the mission.
Real Time Computer Center orbital parameters compared favorable with those
predicted for a 99" flight azimuth for 1 0 Aug. 66 launch date, as follows:

2 . Propulsion. Propulsion system performance was nominal. A l l pressures
appeared smooth during the start sequence, steady state, and shutdown. Vehicle axial
accelerometer U l O l A indicated 6 . 2 g a t BECO and 3 . 3 g a t SECO.

I n i t i a l Guidance Commands after BECO was pitch LIP 1.1degrees/sec
and yaw left 1 . 2 degrees/sec. The resulting pitch oscillation continued t o SECO
with a maximum amplitude of 0 . 4 2 degrees P/P and a period o f 3 . 5 seconds. The
yaw with a maximum amplitude of 0.95 degrees P/P and period o f 3 . 5 seconds was
damped i n 30 seconds.
Pitch down and yaw right commands a t SECO produced no attitude oscillations.
The pitch and yaw rates a t VECO were essentially zero. Vehicle 5 8 0 1 was the f i r s t
NASA A T L A S flown with integrators active during vernier solo.
4 . Radio Guidance System. Th? Radio Guidance System performance was
satisfactory. The track subsystem acquired the vehicle i n the first cube a t T + 6 1 . 6
seconds, i n the conical mode-of operation, as planned. The switch t o monopulse mode
operation occurred at T+66.4 seconds w i t h a good track flag presented t o the computer
by 6 9 . 6 seconds. Track lock was continuous from acquisition until T + 3 8 7 . 5 seconds.
Final l o s s o f track lock occurred at T+392 . 3 seconds with the track antenna a t an
elevation angle of 3.87 degrees.

D. AGENA VEHICLE
1. Guidance and Controls. The AGENA guidance system performed very well
through 1 s t burn and until L O S at Building AE. The D-timer events were correct and
on time.
The transients at f i r s t burn ignition were small with 2.2" transients seen i n
yaw damped out in 2 secon.ds and 2.2' i n r o l l damped out i n 3 seconds and no appreciable
pitch transient. A t first burn cutoff r o l l had a 2.2" peak-to-peak oscillation of 0 . 6 cps
which was damped out i n 1 0 seconds. The horizon sensors errors were quite small and
the response to them was very good.

Fuel Pump inlet Temperature ( O F ) 55.3
BECO SECO
Propellant isolation valve (PIV) closiire was normal as indicated by both the
pump and venturi inlet pressure at 9 to 1 0 seconds after engine cutoff.
Maximum peak pump inlet pressure4 at cutoff were recorded at 43 psig and
37 psig, oxidizer and fuel respectively.
POGO effects were also noted a t the pump inlet pressures transducers and
were damped out by T+20 seconds.

4. Telemetry. A l l AGENA measurements were good except for the space-
craft radial accelerometer which failed to yield any data. A l l other acceleronieters
on the forward ring and A T L A S axial accelerometer exhibited excursions during the
transonic period.
5. Range Safety Receivers. Range Safety control was switched to down range
at +555 seconds. AGC’s were normal and no commands were sent.
6. C-Band. C-band P R F was steady and indicated normal radar switching until
LOS Antigua T L M .
Significant flight events and times are listed i n table 3 . Actual titnes listed are
event times received from the range shortly af:er launch. Times derived from telemetry
w i l l differ slightly in some cases.

3. Station 7 Radar. Station 7 coverage for radar 7.18 was from +192 to
+633 seconds on automatic beacon. The Range Safety carrier was on from 1930:24
t o 1 9 3 4 : 1 8 Z with no commands being sent.

1. Weather. Weather during the launch operation was good. Upper wind
shears were within acceptable l i m i t s . A t liftoff, the following weather parameters were
recorded :

B. MAJOR PRELAUNCH PROBLEMS (LAUNCH VEHICLE)
One guidance gas regulator failed during AGENA validations i n hangar " E " .
Results of the failure analysis showed faulty worknianship was the cause of the failure.
Just prior t o completion of AGENA validations i n hangar "E", the guidance gas regulator
was replaced for the second time. This replacement was a result of a problem which
occurred at Sunnyvale Regulators of a certain series were suspected because of a
stack up of tolerances which had caused faulty operation at the factory i n at least one
case.
The major launch vehicle and spacecraft tests conducted are summarized i n the
following paragraphs.

2 . B-FACT/EMC, May 5, 1966. T h i s test was a combined B - F A C T and
electromagnetic compatibility check. The test was run to validate the complex AGE.
During the test, the missile battery was replaced due to low voltage output. Also, a
faulty connection between a missile harness connector and an EMC sandwich plug
prevented the destruct signal from blowing the destructor fuses. A l l test objectives
were met.
3 . B-FACT, June 13, 1 9 6 6 . During the plus count portion of the test, there
wcre anomalies in the guidance discrete light indications. The A B E T S self-test switch
was found to be i n the wrong position. It was reset t o the proper position, and the test
recycled to T - 5 minutes. The test was then satisfactorily completed.
a . During the minus count, the prit,nary AGENA timer motor could not be
stopped from the LOB. Investigation discloscid an intermittent contact i n umbilical
catenary cable P 3 . A replacemeiit cable was available but was not wired per print.
Tti? spare cable was rewired per print and installed after the test. A l l test objectives
were accomp 1 i shed.
b . During the minus count the LOR console light which monitors the l i p
seal solenoid position was intermittent. After the-J-FACT investigation traced the
problem to a relay driver (AGE) which activates the console light. The relay driver
was replaced.

d. During the Range Safety Command Test at approximately T-SO
minutes, a manual fuel cutoff indication was not received by the AGENA. Investigation
showed that t h i s anorrialy occurred due t o an improper setting of the AGENA command
destruct switches. This was a procedural error.

1 0 . F i r s t Launch Attempt, August 9, 1 9 6 6 . T h i s attempt was scrubbed
due to a PU noise problem. Other problems that occurred during the count were:
11. Launch, August 10, 1 9 6 6 . The count began on time and proceeded
normally until T-35 minutes when the inability to pressurize the AGENA fuel tank
caused a 1 5 minute hold. A regulator i n the high pressure cabinet (AGE) was adjusted,
permitting the count to continue.
The spacecraft air conditioner problem also recurred during the count, requiring
replacement of a module.

The spacecraft continued with the count until T-350 when the set up for the
Photo Subsystem Test was t o begin. It was found that t o complete t h i s set up the TWTA
had t o be brought on at t h i s time instead o f i t s regular schedule at T - 2 2 5 . Since the

spacecraft was then i n a h i g h power mode the evaluation of the TWTA was made a t
t h i s time and was not brought up again at T - 2 2 5 . T h i s sequence was u t i l i z e d during
the launch countdown.
From this point the spacecraft countdown proceeded smoothly with a l l systems
functioning properly.
During the early portion of the countdown when spacecraft power was turned
on, which was coincident with local sunrise, a problem occwred i n controlling the shroud
inlet air temperature. Excursions i n the' spacecraft above the redline temperature of
52°F occurred. The air conditioning system was brought tinder control at approximately
T - 2 3 0 ininutes and from that point the spacecraft temperature was maintained between
43 - 46°F. A t the time of the "scrub'', a l l spacecraft systems were G O .
