Statement of Purpose:
My greatest goal in life is to make a lasting and meaningful impact on children, I am sure I
can accomplish this by becoming a special needs teacher. Since a very early age, I knew in my heart that
I wanted to become a teacher. Children are very impressionable and take in information with ease. Their
minds can be molded and shaped into what you want them to become. You can a child the love of
learning and school in general- which I hope to someday do. I came to UNC Charlotte because they have
an amazing track record for producing teachers and they are also part of the new Teaching Fellows.
This goal will not come easily, it will require a lot of time and hard work. First, I plan to gain
some insight about being a special needs teacher by shadowing various teachers in the profession,
including teachers in different countries by doing study abroad in Spain and South Africa. This will help
me in my lesson plans, so I can cater to every student no matter ability, so they enjoy the lessons I teach
and hopefully eventually love coming to school to learn. Next, when I do become a teacher I will strive
to make a real and lasting connection with each of my students by really getting to know them as a
person, not just my student. This will really be the difference in a child loving or hating school. If a
student does not like their teacher how can they possibly love going to school every day? Lastly, I will
just continue to work with children with special needs by volunteering and being a CAP worker to
continually increase my understanding of those with special needs and how to really build those
connections and cater to their needs.
The biggest change for me to accomplish my goal of making that lasting and meaningful impact
on children is my schedule. I like to help and get involved in any way I can, but this sometimes leads to me
over involving myself in too many activities. Even while looking for clubs to join here on campus there
were so many that seemed like a great opportunity to help those in need in our community. Therefore, I
will have to really prioritize what is important to me and what will help me reach my goal.
I am beyond excited for the future. I have many ideas for my classroom. I have even started
collecting books to start my own classroom library. I have also gained many ideas for assignments and
organization from the teachers I have worked with. Each classroom is arranged similarly, but each one is
different from the other- just like their teaching style. Every teacher has their own style and way to teach
each subject, just as I will have my own. Time does not always change things, but, instead it confirms
your ideas. As I get closer to obtaining my degree and taking hold of my future, I am sure that teaching
is the perfect path for me.
