OEC Elite/9900/9800/9600 HV Cable Connector/Receptacle Cleaning and Greasing Instructions

Overview
Note: The procedures in this instruction supersede any HV cable connector/receptacle cleaning and
greasing procedures found in any other service documentation.

This procedure provides detailed instructions for cleaning and greasing the High Voltage (HV) cable anode
and cathode connectors and receptacles. The most critical step to perform when assembling the HV system
is ensuring that all HV cable connections are adequately sealed against ingress of moisture, air pockets, or
debris to prevent arcing and corona discharge, which can lead to degradation of the insulating materials
and connectors.

Disconnect Power Sources and Setup

The following steps assume that all safety procedures have been followed, power has been switched off, all
necessary covers have been removed, and that the HV cable connectors have been disconnected from the
HV tank and X-ray tube and are accessible for cleaning and greasing. See the appropriate service manual for
the steps necessary to create this system condition.

WARNING: Only competent personnel trained in safety practices involving HV electrical equipment
should attempt to install or reinstall HV components. All equipment must be turned off
and allowed to discharge during installation and removal of parts. Do not touch or move
energized parts. Electrical circuits inside the equipment use voltages that are capable of
causing serious injury or death from electrical shock, and/or damage to the equipment.
Use appropriate precautions.

CAUTION: Follow all Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.

CAUTION: To prevent ESD damage, ensure that you are properly grounded with a grounded wrist strap
before handling any electronic components sensitive to ESD.

CAUTION: Do not touch the HV cable connectors with your bare hands. Oil from them can contaminate
the rubber.

CAUTION: The HV cable connectors are not resistant to some solvents, oils and greases. Use only
approved Isopropyl Alcohol Wipes to clean the connectors and receptacles.

OEC Elite/9900/9800 Cleaning and Greasing

Note: The following procedures use only one HV cable connector and HV tank or X-ray tube receptacle as an
example. Perform the same procedures for each connector and receptacle.

Cleaning Procedure
1. Put on rubber/nitrile gloves to avoid contact with chemicals, grease and HV cable connectors.

2. If not already removed, remove the HV cable connector from the X-ray tube and/or HV tank receptacle.
Using a spanner nut wrench, loosen the high voltage nut on the HV cable. Unscrew the nut and slide it up
along the cable and out of the way. Carefully remove the HV cable connector from the receptacle and
remove the U-shaped high voltage retainer. Set the retainer aside.

3. Use a Kim Wipe cloth to remove HV grease from the high voltage cable connector. Then use an Isopropyl
Alcohol wipe to remove any remaining grease/contamination and to thoroughly clean the connector.
Repeat as needed.

4. Use a lint-free Kim Wipe cloth and Chemtronics Ultra Jet Canned Air to wipe off and completely dry the connector
and its pins.

5. Use Kim wipes to remove HV grease from within the receptacle of the HV connector on the HV tank or X-ray tube.
Then use Isopropyl Alcohol wipes to thoroughly clean and remove all remaining grease/carbon deposits.

6. Use Chemtronics Ultra Jet Canned Air to disperse any remaining grease/contamination from the back of
the receptacle and use Kim wipes to remove residue. Repeat as needed until the receptacle is clean of
any deposits.

7. Use Chemtronics Ultra Jet Canned Air to completely dry the receptacle.

CAUTION: Failure to thoroughly clean the interior (receptacle) of the HV connector on the HV tank or X-ray
tube (next step) can result in serious equipment malfunction. Make sure these areas are clean
and thoroughly dry.
8. If needed, use the flat non-serrated edge of the plastic knife wrapped with a Kim Wipe to assist in wiping
and drying the interior (receptacle) of the HV connector on the HV tank or X-ray tube. Do not use your
fingers.
9. Inspect the interior of the receptacle carefully, using a flashlight and (if necessary) a dentist mirror. If
there are cracks or significant arc tracks that cannot be cleaned, replace the HV tank or X-ray tube.
10. Inspect the HV cable connector carefully, using a flashlight and/or magnifier. If the cable connector
shows significant evidence of arcs, such as charring or blackening that cannot be cleaned off, replace
the HV cable.

Greasing Procedure
CAUTION: Use only approved Dow Corning compound listed above. Do not use any other type of grease,
and do not use grease that has been stored in a can. Do not save old grease as it can become
contaminated by moisture, etc.

OEC Elite/9900/9800/9600 HV Cable Connector/Receptacle Cleaning and Greasing Instructions

CAUTION: Use only a clean plastic knife (supplied with each tube of grease) to apply and spread the
grease, and wear rubber/nitrile gloves so your skin does not contact the HV connectors or
grease.

CAUTION: Do not use wood tongue depressors, spatulas, or any kind of brush to apply the grease. Be
careful not to contaminate the connectors with hair, or by handling them with bare hands.
1. Apply Dow Corning compound grease to one side of the HV cable connector by squeezing out of the
tube a small bead, about ⅛" thick, beginning at the flange and continuing all the way down to the tip on
one side of the connector. Repeat on the opposite side.
2. Using the plastic knife, spread the grease evenly around the connector in both directions until there is
an even coating the entire length of the connector. The grooves left by the serrations of the knife should
be around the circumference of the connector, not down its length. Do not spread the grease
lengthwise, as this can allow trapped air paths along the length to occur.
3. Carefully fill each of the three pin wells of the connector. Start by placing the grease tube opening at the
edge of each pin well, leaving room for the grease to flow out of the well (see Figure 1). Gently squeeze
the grease into the well in order to push air out of the well opening (see Figure 2). Inspect the grease-
filled well and ensure that there are no air pockets (see Figure 3).

Figure 1 Figure 2 Figure 3

4. Use the flat edge of the plastic knife to gently wipe away the excess grease from the face of the
connector (see Figure 4).

Greased Connector Installation Procedure

Note: The following steps outline how to properly connect the HV cable anode and cathode connectors to
the HV tank or X-ray tube.
1. Position the HV cable connector so that it is correctly aligned with the socket in the HV tank or X-ray tube
receptacle. Carefully insert the connector straight into the HV tank or X-ray tube receptacle to avoid
wiping off the grease along one side of the connector and then gently rotate it to engage the contacts.
2. When you feel the contacts are about to engage, rotate the connector about one quarter turn each way
to displace any air paths that may have been formed. You may need to press down and release a little
way several times until the connector is fully engaged with no air pockets trapped inside.
3. After the contacts have engaged, press firmly down until the connector is fully inserted into the HV tank
or X-ray tube receptacle.
4. Install the U-shaped high voltage retainer over the connector’s flange, making sure that the guide pins in
the receptacle are aligned with the slots in the retainer. Screw on by hand the high voltage nut until it is
finger-tight. Using a spanner nut wrench, tighten the high voltage nut.

High Voltage Arc Test

1. Perform a High Voltage Arc Test following instructions in the appropriate service document for the model
of the system being serviced.

Note: If arcing occurs, troubleshoot the high voltage system using the appropriate service manual.

9600 Cleaning and Greasing

the receptacles using the following steps even if no contaminants are found.

1. Insert a lint-free Kim Wipe cloth into the HV Tank receptacle, then clean out the old grease. Use as many
lint-free Kim Wipe cloths as necessary. See Figure 6.

Figure 6. Insert a Lint-free Kim Wipe cloth into the Receptacle

2. Use Isopropyl Alcohol wipes to thoroughly clean and remove grease/contaminants.

3. Use Chemtronics Ultra Jet Canned Air to disperse any remaining grease/contamination from the back of
the receptacle and use Kim wipes to remove residue. Repeat as needed.
4. Align the connector’s key with the notch in its receptacle (6 o’clock position), then push the connector into
the receptacle until the connector’s pins engage in the receptacle, pull out the receptacle and note if the
connector picked up any remaining grease/contaminants.
5. Use a lint-free Kim Wipe cloth to wipe off any grease/contaminants from the connector. Then use an
Isopropyl Alcohol wipe to thoroughly clean the connector. Repeat as needed.

Greasing, HV Tank Cable Connector

CAUTION: Concerning grease for both the HV tank and X-Ray tube cable connectors:

Be sure to use only the approved Dow Corning grease compound.

Do not use grease that has been stored in a can.

Do not save old grease.

Use only a clean plastic knife to apply the grease. Be careful not to contaminate the connectors
with bare fingers or other contaminants.

It is very important to insert the connectors straight into their receptacles, to avoid wiping off
the grease along one side of the connector as you insert it. Because of the flexible nature of the
connector, it is possible to insert it in a misaligned position.

If too much compound is applied, complete engagement of the HV connector will be difficult or
impossible. In this case, remove some of the compound and repeat engagement until the
connector is seated. It is actually good if a (very) little compound oozes out around the
connector flange – it helps hold the retaining ring in place, does no harm, and gives some
assurance that the space between the connector and the receptacle is full of compound.

CAUTION: The grooves left by the serrations of the knife should be around the circumference of the
connector, not down its length. Do not spread the grease lengthwise, as this can allow trapped
air paths along its length to occur.

1. Place the HV cable nut onto the HV cable connector, then slide it up past the connector’s flange onto the
cable so it doesn’t obstruct greasing the cable connector. See Figure 8.
2. Re-install the rubber seal onto the connector with the tapered end facing the end of the connector, then
slide it up to where it meets the connector’s flange. Ensure the rubber seal’s notch aligns with the
connector’s key. See Figure 8.

3. Squeeze an ample sized strip of grease from the rubber seal down to the connector’s tip, then squeeze
another identical bead strip on the opposite side of the connector. The beads should contain enough
grease so that the entire length of the connector is covered in grease with no dry spots. Typically this
should be at least ¼-inch thick or greater. Ensure there are two bead strips on each (opposite) side,
extending from the rubber seal to the connector’s tip. See Figure 8.

Figure 8. Squeeze Beads of Grease onto Connector

4. Using the plastic knife’s serrated edge, spread the grease evenly around the circumference (not
lengthwise) of the connector in both directions until there is an even coating on the entire length of the
connector. Ensure there are no dry spots on the connector.
5. Place an ample sized bead of grease on the tip of the connector, the spread it evenly over the top of the
connector.

Re-Installation, HV Tank Cable Connector

CAUTION: Ensure you insert each connector with correct polarity: anode to anode, cathode to cathode.

Note: Begin by re-installing the lower connector first for ease of re-installation. If the upper connector is re-
installed first, it will be more difficult to re-install the lower connector.
1. Align the HV cable connector’s key with the notch in its receptacle (6 o’clock position), then push the
connector into the receptacle until the connector’s pins engage in the receptacle.
2. Place the U-shaped retainer over the connector’s flange, with the retainer’s tapered side facing inward
toward the HV tank.
3. Using the larger end of the spanner wrench, re-install the HV cable nut and tighten it one-half turn past
snug.

X-Ray Tube Cleaning and Greasing Procedure

Cleaning, X-Ray Tube Cable Connector
1. Using the smaller end of the spanner wrench, remove the HV cable nut from the X-ray tube.
2. Remove the U-shaped retainer from the X-ray tube.
3. Gently pull the X-ray tube HV cable connector out of its receptacle.
4. Slide off the HV cable nut from the cable connector. Use a lint-free Kim Wipe cloth to wipe off grease and
contaminants from the cable nut and retainer. Then use an Isopropyl Alcohol wipe to remove any
remaining grease/contamination. Repeat as needed.

Note: For the retainer, ensure that scratches on the underside caused by contact with the roll pins are
cleaned off. Any scratched off metal is contamination.
5. Use a lint-free Kim Wipe cloth to dry the nut and retainer. If necessary, use Chemtronics Ultra Jet Canned
Air if the nut or retainer cannot be completely dried with a lint-free Kim Wipe cloth.
6. Use a lint-free Kim Wipe cloth to wipe off grease and contaminants from the HV cable connector. Then
use an Isopropyl Alcohol wipe to remove any remaining grease/contamination and to thoroughly clean
the connector. Repeat as needed.
7. Visually inspect the connector, preferably using a flashlight and/or magnifier, to ensure it is clean. If there
are significant arc-tracks (other than a small spot), such as charring or blackening that could not be
cleaned off, replace the HV cable.
8. At this point, use only Chemtronics Ultra Jet Canned Air on the connector and its three pins to completely
dry them and to remove any particles that may have been left by the lint-free Kim Wipe cloth. Ensure the
connector and its three pins are completely dry.

Cleaning, X-Ray Tube Receptacle

CAUTION: Failure to thoroughly clean the receptacles of the HV connectors can result in serious
equipment malfunction. Clean the receptacles using the following steps even if no
contaminants are found.

1. Wrap a lint-free Kim Wipe cloth around a plastic knife, then use the non-serrated flat side of the knife to
thoroughly remove the grease from the receptacle. Use as many lint-free Kim Wipe cloths as necessary.
2. Using a 6-inch long Chemtronics swab, insert it into the receptacle down to the bottom end where the
contact pins are located, and remove any remaining grease. Use as many swabs as necessary.
3. Use Isopropyl Alcohol wipes to thoroughly clean and remove grease/contaminants.
4. Use Chemtronics Ultra Jet Canned Air to disperse any remaining grease/contamination from the back of
the receptacle and use Kim wipes to remove residue. Repeat as needed.
5. Inspect the interior of the receptacle carefully, using a flashlight and a dentist mirror, and ensure that it is
clean. If there are significant arc tracks (other than a small spot), such as charring or blackening that
could not be cleaned off, replace the X-ray tube.

6. At this point, use only Chemtronics Ultra Jet Canned Air to dry the receptacle. Ensure the receptacle is
completely dry.

Greasing, X-Ray Tube Cable Connector

1. Place the HV cable nut onto the HV cable connector, then slide it up past the connector’s flange onto the
cable so it doesn’t obstruct greasing the cable connector.
2. Squeeze one small bead strip starting from the connector’s flange down to the connector’s tip, then
squeeze another identical small bead strip on the opposite side of the connector. The beads should be
about ⅛-inch thick. Ensure there are two bead strips on each (opposite) side, extending from the
connector’s flange to its tip.
3. Using the plastic knife’s serrated edge, spread the grease evenly around the circumference (not
lengthwise) of the connector in both directions until there is an even coating on the entire length of the
connector.
4. Place three very small beads of grease on the tip of the connector, between the pin’s three sockets, and
carefully spread the grease across the flat surface of the top. Do not get any compound inside the pin’s
sockets. You should have a very thin film of grease over the flat portion of the connector only, no more
than 1/32-inches.

Re-Installation, X-Ray Tube Cable Connector

CAUTION: Ensure you insert each connector with correct polarity: anode to anode, cathode to cathode.

1. Insert the HV cable connector into the receptacle, and when you feel that the connector’s three pin
sockets are about to be fit over the receptacle’s three matching extended pin shafts, gently rotate the
connector about a quarter turn each way to allow any trapped air to escape down the side of the
connector.
2. Press the connector firmly in place by rotating the connector until the connector’s three pins sockets
engage over the receptacle’s three extended pin shafts.
3. Position the U-shaped retainer over the connector’s flange, making sure you fit the retainer’s three
notches over the matching three roll pins on the X-ray tube.
4. Using the smaller end of the spanner wrench, re-install the cable nut and tighten it one-half turn past
snug.

High Voltage Arc Test

1. Perform a High Voltage Arc Test following instuctions in the appropriate service document for the model
of the system being serviced.

Note: If arcing occurs, troubleshoot the high voltage sub system using the appropriate service manual.
