MOVIE SUMMARY

This movie is about relationship between 3 best friends who is Ranchoddas Shyamaldas
Chanchad (Aamir Khan), Farhan Qureshi (R. Madhavan) and Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi).
These three boys are an engineering students who share a room in a hostel at Imperial College
of Engineering which is one of the best engineering college in Indian. This college are held by
a fierce headmaster or the dean of the college who is Professor Viru Sahastrabudhhe (Boman
Irani) or most known as “Virus” at the college. There also have one character which is very
nerd person and also a smart student there who is Chatur Ramalingam (Omi Vaidya) or they
called “Silencer”.

This story starts with a flashback from the present day, ten years after “Silencer” vowed
revenge from Rancho and his other friends for embarrassing him at the speech on a ceremony
and promised to become more successful than Rancho ten years later. Having lost contact for
ten years with Rancho, his friends Farhan and Raju begin a journey to find him for a long time.
They are joined by “Silencer” who want to compare about his wealth and Rancho, and wanted
to revenge about what happened last ten years.

During their journey, “Silencer” also are looking to make a deal with a famous scientist
during the year named Phunsukh Wangdu. Phunsukh Wangdu are most talented scientist and
prospective business associate who has hundreds of patents. When they find Rancho's house,
they walk into his father's funeral, and find a completely different Rancho (Jaaved Jaffrey).
After accusing the new man of stealing their friend's identity and profiting from his intellect,
the host pulls a gun on them, but Farhan and Raju turn the tables by seizing the father's ashes
and threatening to flush them down the toilet. The householder capitulates and says that their
friend was a destitute servant boy who loved learning, while he, the real Rancho, was a lazy
wealthy child who disliked study, so the family agreed to let the servant boy study in Rancho's
place instead of labouring. In return, the real Rancho would pocket the qualifications and the
benefits thereof, while the impersonator would sever all contact with the world and start a new
life.

The real Rancho reveals in picture that “Silencer” showed them and see Rancho behind his
secretary. As they know, Rancho is now a school teacher in Ladakh. Then, they go there
immediately. But before that, they take Pia (Kareena Kapoor) who is Rancho’s ex-girlfriend
during their college. Unfortunately, Pia is wanted to marry again with Suhas which they already
wanted to marry each other in the last ten years before Rancho make them separate. These two

friends make the ceremony failed again by taking Pia rom her wedding with performing the
same tricks with his material possessions and having Raju turn up the ceremony disguised as
the groom and eloping Pia in public.

When they arrive in Ladakh, they see a group of enthusiastic Ladakh children who are
motivated by love of knowledge. Pia and the fake Rancho rekindle their love, while “Silencer”
mocks and abuses Rancho the schoolteacher before walking away. When his friends ask what
his real name is, he reveals that his name is Phunsukh Wangdu and then he is calling “Silencer”,
who has turned his back, to turn around and meet his prospective business partner. “Silencer”
is horrified and falls to his knees, accepts his defeat, and continues to plead his case with
Phunsukh Wangdu to establish the business relationship he was after. The movie end with the
3 friends and Pia left “Silencer” behind while he try to approach Phunsukh Wangdu.

CONTENTS

1.0 DESPERATE TO DO ANYTHING WITHOUT THINKING THE OTHERS

1.1 Ethical Awareness

This can be seen in the first opening of the movie itself where Farhan pretending to be sick
and fall unconscious in the airplane. Instead, he is making the rest of the people on that plane
become nervous and anxious. Due to this undesirable event, the pilot made emergency landing
and two doctors come with a wheelchair to give immediate treatment. They did not know that
Farhan was cheating them all.

Before they pass through the gate suddenly Farhan woke up and walk like nothing happen
and run away in haste and collide with the people in the airport. He also lied to the taxi driver
by pretending to be someone else to get a free ride. In the end, Farhan successfully achieved
his plan to meet Rancho.

1.2 Awareness of Stakeholders

Farhan did this unethical things because he needs to meet his friend, Chatur on specific
location immediately. While on call, Chatur tell him that he knows where Rancho was now.
Farhan was so excited to meet his long-lost friend that he meets for the last time was at the
graduation day.

1.3 Ethical Reasoning

Farhan did such action because he believed if he hesitate to do so, he would not have a
chance to see his old friends again. The feelings of strong friendship and longing memories
among themselves as student before, triggered Farhan to do action out of the control. Besides,
the act of Farhan unethical because, it can cause other people on that plane stuck and will
interrupt their business matter that had been set.

1.4 Ethical Suggestion

We made a conclusion if we were in that situation like Farhan, we would ask the permission
of the pilot through the flight attendant to get off from the plane before it get departure. It is
because, if the plane had departure, it was hard to return except it has a strong reason to do so.

1.5 Ethical Decision Making

Farhan should move on or let it go because he get the call a bit late. He should not done the
commotion in the plane as it will make others in trouble. Besides, One of the ethical approach
that should Farhan take is utilitarianism principles. It is a moral principle that holds that the
morally right course of action in any situation is the one that produces the greatest balance of
benefits over harms for everyone affected. Farhan disturb the other passengers on that plane
from his action which is passengers should have a convenience experienced while in the plane
or on flight. For Farhan case, the passengers unable to get benefit from the flight services. This
clearly shown that Farhan compeletely violate the utilitarianism principles because his action
produce harms over benefit to everyone on that plane.

2.0 SUICIDE

2.1 Ethical Awareness

Ethical awareness is the willingness and ability to identify moral and ethical contexts and
dilemmas, critically examine, assess, and change one's own ethical values and examine the
implications of one's own behaviour for the lives of others. Based on this movie,there are two
conflict of suicide. First scene is Joy Lobo who have hanging himself up in his room. The
second example is Raju Rastogi who is jumping out of window from the director office.

Rancho has stated that Joy Lobo’s death is not a suicide, but it is the emotional killing. Dr
Virus is keep pressuring him about his final project, and he explained to Joy,s father directly
that he will not graduate this year. This thing have bring a big impact to Joy since he feel very
pressured due to his assesment. Moreover, he only can make his final project after his father
getting well from sick. Because of depression, Joy have commited suicide in his

As for Raju Rastogi, he has a more worst situation. The pressures reach a critical stage
when they was drunk, and then Raju were wondering why Rancho can get the first place in
exam, but not him and Farhan. And then they made the deal to change themselves if Rancho
propose Pia. To accept the challenge, the three friends have break into Dr Virus’s house at
night to allow Rancho to propose to Pia, and then urinate on a door inside the compound before
running away when Dr Virus senses intruders and he can identify one of the three companies
which is Raju. The next day, Dr Virus look for Raju and he threat to expel Raju lest he talks
on the other two. Unable to choose between betraying his friend or letting down his family,
Raju jumps out of the 3rd floor window and lands on a courtyard, but after extensive care from
Pia and his roommates, awakes from a coma.

2.2 Awareness of stakeholders

Joy Lobo is the side character that bring one of negative effect in the movie. Due to the
pressure that he have face, and he feel really ashamed to meet his father, so he has decided to
suicide. For him, that is the only way to get rid of the problem. However, he has make a wrong
decision since he have make everyone that loves him feel really sad and terrible.

Raju Rastogi is one of the main characters in this scene. Raju try to commit suicide because
he think the best that his can do in this situation now. But actually his wrong, Raju feel sorry
after his awakes from a coma and try not on doing it once more.

Dr Virus who are the director of the Imperial College of Engineering in Delhi, was very
angry because they found out Raju, Farhan and Rancho trespassing his house, making chaos
and urinating in front of his door. Dr Virus are the in charge in the university who can expel
the student in that university.

2.3 Ethical reasoning

Joy Lobo cannot submitting his final project early not on purpose. Actually,before this he
is taking care of his father that is not so well. Since Dr Virus is being too strict with him, and
being cruel to decide not giving him the second chance, this has force him to suicide.

Meanwhile, the three friend which is Rancho, Farhan and Raju is doing that thing because
they feel very angry to the Dr Virus when Dr Virus always trying to judge and thinking negative
about them. With that, Dr Virus can giving to them punishment. So, they get revenge by going
to Dr Virus’s house to make chaos such as urinate on a door inside the compound before
running away. Unfortunately, Dr Virus identify one of the person that make chaos in his house
that night which is Raju. On the next day, Dr Virus look for Raju and announced that he will
be expel from the university. Dr Virus ask them to quit because his feel very angry what Raju
did to his house last night. Dr Virus give Raju two option either expelled himself or expelling
Rancho from university.

Raju did not also want his to be expel from university because he is the only son in his
family and he need the certificate to get a good job to support his father that is sick, and also
his sister that still unmarried because his family is very poor and he is the only hope for his
family. At the end, Raju try to commit suicide because his think this is the best action that he
can do. But actually it is totally wrong and his feel sorry.

2.4 Ethical suggestion

Joy Lobo and Raju shouldn’t try to commit suicide in this situation.

For the best ethical suggestion, Joy should persuade and convincing Dr Virus that he can do
his best for his final project and he can become one of the best student in the college. Dr Virus
also should not be too strict with Joy. He must also considered about Joy’s application to extend
the submission due date as he is not doing it on purpose.

As for Raju, he should try to persuade Dr Virus to forgive him. Raju should begging Dr to
give one more chance for him to change his attitude and his personal self. Dr Virus also actually
cannot insist Raju to choose the two option whereas the first option is Raju must expel from
the university and the second option is betrayed Rancho with the ways Rancho had to be
stopped from the university. This will bring a big pressure on Raju and make him weak-willed.
The best ethical suggestion for Dr virus is to forgive Raju and ask him to did not make the such
things again. With that, it will become the situation in a good situation.

2.5 Ethical decision making

Raju Rastogi and Joy Lobo are having ethical issue/dilemmas in this scene which is from
religious issue. Raju tried to commit suicide and Joy have committed suicide when he was to
be stopped from the university. As we know that, all believers are forbidden to commit suicide.
So, have been done by Joy and Raju are totally wrong and forbidden by religion.

The best solution to resolve the ethical issues is Raju and Joy should supposedly persuade
the lecturer which is Dr Virus meet a better settlement or positive solution.

3.0 IRRESPONSIBLE

3.1 Ethical awareness

- Raju wants to get excellent results in the exam and wants to change his room with chess.
Because of fear that his decision will be affected if he does not. The rancho is a bit mischievous,
when he farts in class, he will insult Chatur and the rancho also likes to make trouble with other
people, Chatur has been stuttered by him by changing teachers’ day scripts, when Chatur read
the paper, many people are defiling it because he mentioned things that made himself ashamed.

3.2 Awareness of stakeholders

- Raju does not change his room as Rancho tells him that he will not make Raju a good
decision. Raju gets excellent results for not changing rooms with Chatur. Chatur also likes farts
in the classroom and Rancho is aware of Chatur. Chatur is not a good example for us to follow.

3.3 Ethical reasoning

- Rancho thinks that Raju will not get a good result if Raju changes the room, but Raju will
get excellent results if he does not change the room. proved Raju got a brilliant decision when
he did not change the room

3.4 Ethical suggestions

- Other suggestions are more diligent in learning and making initial preparations. By changing
the room with Chatur does not bring any meaning if our knowledge is low, so we must learn
early and prepare neatly to answer the exam and spend a long time studying the lesson.

3.5 Ethical decision making

- In my opinion, if I become a rider I will study early to answer the exam and be prepared to
answer the exam at any time, and if I become a rancho, I will be straightforward to the mistake
Chatur did because Chatur will always insult others for the behavior that is.

4.0 BULLYING

4.1 Ethical Awareness

Bullying is the use of superior strength or influence to intimidate someone, typically to force
them to do something. In 3 idiots’ movie, Raju Rastogi, Ranchhoddas Chanchad, Farhan
Qureshi and their friends were bullied in the campus. On the first day of their campus life, they
were told to show their underwear in front of others. Every one of the new students will got a
stamp on their butt after being check by the seniors. They were forced by their seniors and
being treat if they don’t want to do it. It was a tradition to give respect to seniors. In business
ethics, there are many unethical things that have done include this bullying issue. The superiors
bullied their employee that not have power. They did whatever they want without think about
people’s right. For example, the employer told their employee to work extra time without
paying the reasonable salary. Or, the employer give work that is not in the employee job scope
which can make them feel depress and being emotional. Bully is totally not good for one’s
mental health and will affect the physical health as usual.

4.2 Awareness of Stakeholders

Gang of bullies (seniors) do that kind of bully because it is a campus tradition. Every a new
students come to the college, they will face the same situation for respect seniors for a reason.
We can said that the bully have a depression, so that they want to release tension by hurt other
people and feel satisfied. Some of them just want to show off their power and being an attention
seeker trough do unethical things. Through this problems, there are better alternatives such as
do a welcome party for new students. This will help new students feel encourage to start a
campus life without any depression and mental pressure. Having a good relationship between
superiors and others have a lot of positive impact and our works will get more qualities.

4.3 Ethical Reasoning

Seniors in the campus run the tradition of “show off underwear” for new students for make
fun of them. Bullied was a satisfaction to the seniors at the same time to embarrass other people.
The superiors felt no guilt did such things to other students. Ranchhoddas Chanchad fought the
bullies to avoid himself to take off his pants. At the same time, he was saved other students
from kept bullied.

4.4 Ethical Suggestion

The school, campus, government and any parties should enforce law to fight bullying
activities. We should fight for justice to make sure no one get harm by bullies. Give punishment
to anyone who involve in bullied. Any violation of fundamental rights should be emphasized
and take action seriously.

4.5 Ethical Decision Making

Moral rights which is right that all human beings everywhere possess to an equal extent
simply by virtue of human being. Ranchhoddas Chanchad and his friends should be treat
equally like other people. No one have to follow the campus tradition to hurt others’ feeling
and pressure students mentally. Justice that fairness among people. The students were bullied
and face unjustly discriminating. Actions should be taken to punish and give penalties to the
bullies.

CONCLUSION

In the nutshell, we can see that there are a lot of ethical and also unethical issues in this
movie. Although it is just a funny movie if the viewers just want to see that, but there are many
ethical issues that we can learn based on this movie.

The first ethical issues are doing something with passion. We must doing something
example doing assignment or studying with passion and without tension. We need to love what
we do and that is when we can get greater things at ease. For example in this movie, Rancho
love to study and love to create something creative with passion in his study and finally he
became a successful well known scientist.

Furthermore, learning is not about being a classroom all the time. We also can learn
something outside the classroom for example Farhan learn to snap a photo outside the class
without learning in formal in the class and the result is all the photos that he snapped draw an
attention from the famous photographer.

Finally, everyone is having their own timeline.Some people have their succesful time in his
short time while the other vice versa .We do not have to race with the other doing it to achieve
something on a timeline. We must always try to gain some knowledge and experience. For
example Raju was not a best student in the university but he did not give up and always work
hard to be a successful engineer in the future. He knows that his friends was taking a scheme
answer for his examination but he did not take it and said he did not want to be engineer by
cheating and he willing to take any repeat paper without cheating to be an engineer.
