Self Assessment Report Department of Aeronautical Engineering, EEC
The Department of Aeronautical Engineering has aimed at offering Outcome Based
Education (OBE). Assessment process is an important tool in the OBE to evaluate and
assess the attainment of Course Outcomes. Program Assessment Committee meeting is
conducted to set the target for COs based on Blooms taxonomy. The assessment processes
are carried out by the department that identify, collect and prepare data to evaluate the
achievement of Course Outcomes. The attainment of the course outcomes are measured
using two assessment tools.

i. Direct Assessment

ii. Indirect Assessment

Direct Assessment: Direct assessments are performance based and they are measured by
student’s knowledge and skills from their performance in the continuous internal
assessment exam, tutorials, classroom interaction, assignments, laboratory observation,
projects and university examinations. These methods provide a sampling of what students
know and/or can do and provide strong evidence of student learning.

Direct Assessment Methods
Internal Assessment Exam
The Internal Assessment marks in theory subject shall be based on three exams
generally conducted once in a month in each semester. An additional test may be
conducted after each internal assessment examinations for the desirous students to give
an opportunity to improve the Internal
Assessment marks. Question papers for the corresponding course will be prepared
based on knowledge level for 100 marks by the respective faculty member and will be
submitted to the internal assessment Exam Coordinator well in advance. Each and every
exam is focused in attaining the course outcomes.
Tutorial
The tutorial sessions provide the students to have more knowledge on problem
solving. Two faculty members are allotted in each class to monitor the students to solve
the problems and verify individually. This ensures maximum knowledge transfer and
Part B-Critrion3: Course Outcomes and Program Outcomes
Self Assessment Report Department of Aeronautical Engineering, EEC
hence maximizes the impact of the delivery of course content. Tutorial questions
ranging from basic to challenging problems are used to assess the fundamental
concepts, numerical and analytical skills.
Assignment
The assignment is a qualitative performance assessment tool designed to assess
students knowledge of engineering practices, framework, and problem solving.
Assignments on specific topics which include application of concepts to solve a wide
range of problems are given frequently to the students and also increase the Learning
Capabilities. The evaluation done by the course teacher based on the rubrics framed
during the PAC meeting along with program and course coordinator.
Classroom Interaction
Classroom interaction is a metric to assess student’s course knowledge by
questioning the students about the particular topic which is discussed by the course
instructor. Classroom interaction is a type of assessment tool by asking question with
the intent of leading students to discover the answer themselves.
Lab Assessment
Lab Assessment is to mainly assess student’s practical knowledge with their
designing capabilities. The marks for the Lab excise are awarded base on the rubrics
after the completion of each excises including the viva questions for each lab courses
respectively.
Projects
Mini project is given to students to keep them updated with the practical
knowledge, skill and team work. It is used to evaluate the students’ ability to use
various tools like use of equipment, components and software and power point
presentations etc.
Main project work is carried out during the final semester of the program. The
work is carried out batch wise, each batch consisting of a maximum of four candidates.
The Project Coordinator(s) gives the instructions to the students by the end of 7th
semester and project batches are formed among the student. Students will submit the
synopsis of their project to the project coordinator(s) for scrutinizing. By the end of 7th
semester zeroth review will be conducted for the students in order to approve and
finalize the selected topic. Based on the area of specialization and competency skills of
the faculties, project coordinator(s) will allocate the batches to the internal guides based
on the student’s interest and faculty expertise.

The guide will continuously guide and monitor the students on weekly basis and
get the updates of the works done by their corresponding batch of students. Three
project reviews will be conducted by the corresponding guide along with project
coordinator(s) based on a schedule.
Based on the performance of the students, the external viva voce marks are
awarded and the same is submitted to the university. The department encourages the
students to showcase their skills by publishing papers in conferences/journals forum and
participating in technical paper presentations. The evaluation procedure for Project is
done by the project coordinator and supervisor based on the rubrics.

University Examination
University examinations that are conducted for theory and laboratory courses are to assess
whether all the course outcomes are attained. After the result declaration by the university
the final grades are evaluated and recorded to check whether the set target level is
attained by the course for the respective COs.
Indirect Assessment methods
Course End Survey
At the end of the semester, a survey is obtained from each student to individually
assess the course outcomes. To assess the knowledge of student on the subject which
individually indicates the course outcome attainment, minimum 3 to 5 suggestions
relevant to each course outcome is posed to each student in the survey form which is
called as course end survey as shown below.

3.2.2. Record the attainment of Course Outcomes of all courses with respect to set
attainment levels (40)

The Department of Aeronautical Engineering has set the attainment

levels for course outcome as detailed below and the set Target level is 3. The Program has
to define the set attainment levels of Course Outcomes for all the courses based on the
University curriculum, blooms taxonomy and type of course and the average attainment of
the past 3 years of the program. The data collected to assess the Course Outcomes and
attainment verified by the HOD and program coordinator through the PAC committee. The
target is analyzed for three consecutive batches and if the target is not achieved then the
target will be refined as shown in the Figure B.3.2.1-1.

Indirect Assessment Tool:

PO and PSO Calculation through Indirect Assessment
The Survey results from Students exit, Alumni, Employers and Parents at the end
of program and also assessment with respect to other co-curricular and extracurricular
activities are recorded as indirect assessment (Figure B.3.3.1-2).

Figure B.3.3.1-2 Indirect Assessment method

Student centric activities like paper presentation in the conference/symposia, project
presentation involvement in college/state/national level/club/cell activities ( ISTE, IETE,
NSS, EDC, culture club, Rotract club, etc.,) and sports activities are recorded in student
portfolio. The survey results and student’s portfolio results are directly mapped with the
POs.
Apart from these assessments normally a student admitted in the program
undergoes In-plant training, Industrial training, pedagogical training, soft skill training etc.
The attainment levels through indirect assessment for the academic years 2016-17, 2015-
16 and 2014-15 are calculated and it is converted to 3 point scale.
