Appendix D: Lesson Plan Guide

Subject/Grade level: Science/ 5th grade

Unit topic (if applicable): Light Energy
Lesson goals: The student will be able to identify and explain the concepts of reflection and
refraction using different objects and working on different activities.
Lesson title or topic: Light: Reflection and Refraction.
Estimated length of lesson: 45 minutes
TEKS Standards:
§112.16. Science, Grade 5
(6) Force, motion, and energy. The student knows that energy occurs in many forms and can be
observed in cycles, patterns, and systems. The student is expected to:
(C) demonstrate that light travels in a straight line until it strikes an object or travels through one
medium to another and demonstrate that light can be reflected such as the use of mirrors or other shiny
surfaces and refracted such as the appearance of an object when observed through water.
Learning Objective(s):
The students will be able to compare the differences between reflect and refract using a variety
of objects, and also to discover how light travels by working in stations.

Academic Language: Students will develop the following vocabulary words:

 Light
 Reflection
 Refraction
 Absorb
 Transmits
Grouping: During the activity, students will be separated in five different groups.

Materials:
Screen 22 lab worksheets Concave lens
YouTube video 2 mirrors 1 pencil
22 whiteboards Star drawings 2 glasses of water
22 markers 4 spoons 22 chrome books
1 anchor chart 5 index cards Kahoot game
1 craft stick 1 Flashlight
1 foil Convex lens

Resources:
Youtube video- this video will be important since it contains great information for review of the
concepts taught before, and students can reinforce their learning throughout watching it.
Kahoot- it will be used to review the information taught, and also as an assessment.
Connections to Other Subjects: Math, Art, ELAR
The lesson has connection with Math because reflection is also a concept used in that subject,
and students have to understand about angles in order to understand the concept of reflection. It
also has a connection with ELAR since they have to read, write, and communicate with others
while working in groups. Finally, it is also connected with art since they will have to describe
what they observe through drawings, using their creativity.
Gradual Release of Responsibility:
The lesson will begin with the teacher modeling the lesson objective. The teacher will start the
lesson reviewing the concepts taught two days before. The teacher will do an activity with the
whole group to clarify misconceptions. Once this finish, independent student practice will take
place; students will be doing the activity in groups, but at the same time by their own. During the
time of working on stations, teacher will be only monitoring, supervising, and guiding students.
By this way, the teacher will informally assessing student learning.

Instructional Procedures (including differentiation and targeted support)

The lesson will start at 1:00 pm.
The teacher will ask some questions to get students ready for the topic (icebreaker)
Teacher will reproduce part of a YouTube video for review.
Once the video ends, teacher will begin the lesson doing an activity with the whole group.
The teacher will distribute a white board and a dry-eraser marker to each student.
While the activity takes place, the teacher will display an anchor chart in the screen as a
reference; this will be helpful for those students who still struggle with the concepts.
Teacher will show 4 different objects, and students will use their whiteboards to answer if they
think the objects refract or reflect. (We do). (15 mins)
The main activity will take place. Students will be separated into 5 groups, two groups will be
conformed of 5 students, and 3 groups will have 4 students. Even though, students will be
working in groups, there will be a moment when each student will be working by his/her own.
Teacher will assign 5 stations.
All students will receive an individual lab worksheet (the worksheet contains the five stations on
it). Students will complete the worksheet while they are working on their experiments.
Students will be assigned to a specific station.
Teacher will explain all 5 stations and will model an example of the activity for a better
comprehension.
Students will work in a station for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, students will rotate to the next
station until they complete all of them. (25 mins)
After the activity, a Kahoot game will take place. Students will review all the information taught
by using their chromebooks. Once students finish answering the kahoot questions, teacher will
review the questions with all students to provide feedback.
Kahoot will be also used as a formative assessment when the teacher gets students´ individual
results to assign a grade.
(5 mins)
Assessment:
Formative assessment will be used. The teacher will be monitoring students while they are
working on their stations. On the other hand, the summative assessment will be using kahoot.
The teacher will see how many questions each student gets right in order to give individuals
grades.
Accommodations/Modifications/Enrichment:
For the ELLs, and for some SPED students who have difficulties reading and writing in English,
the teacher will translate the most important parts of the lesson, write the station´s instruction in
Spanish, and model how to do them for a better understanding. Teacher will also allow extra
time for those students who need it.
Gifted and Talented
For the Gifted and talented students, an extra activity will be assigned in order to challenge them
and maintain the lesson interesting for all. These students will have to investigate and explain
what is exactly happening with the light and the objects in a deeper way. They will have to write
it down on their science notebook. The teacher will explain this activity once they finish their lab
worksheet.
