Brazilian security forces have occupied one of Rio de Janeiro's biggest slums as part of a major crackdown
ahead of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics.
Some 800 police and special forces moved into the Mangueira shantytown, without needing to fire a shot, having
announced the raid in advance.
The slum - or favela - is close to Rio's famous Maracana stadium, where the World Cup final will be played.
The pre-dawn operation involved armoured vehicles and helicopters.
According to the newspaper, O Globo, leaflets were thrown out of the helicopters, some with photos of wanted
criminals.
Others were printed with the police special forces' telephone number so that residents could pass on information
about drugs traffickers or weapons.
BBC Brazil correspondent Paulo Cabral says most of Mangueira's residents co-operated with the operation, as
they want to rid the area of drug dealers.
He says that Rio's authorities are making an effort to gain the trust of those living in the slums, who – after
decades of abuse - have got used to seeing the police as their enemy.
Mangueira - home to one of Rio's most famous samba schools - is the 18th favela that the authorities have
occupied recently.

Having built an impressive oeuvre over the past three decades, today Kapoor stands out as a sculptor in the
strictest sense of the word: he has introduced sculpture in a new aesthetic and technical scale by incorporating
techniques – appropriated from architecture, aeronautics, and the heavy industry – to the support.
Anish Kapoor’s forms and sculptures are apparently deceiving; they seem quite simple in terms of form, yet they
convey, each of them, a dizzying complexity of natural elements, technique, aesthetic and finishing. Brazilian poet
Antonio Cicero once told me that finishing accounts for 50% of a poetic creation.
I have become deeply aware of this fact. In Kapoor’s work, it accounts for even more. For example, When I am

the wall, enunciating a bulging form that in itself heralds creation and the sublime. It is art, wanting to be born.

A long-lost early Christian text says Jesus asked Judas to betray him.
Even Jesus recognized that there was s o m e t h i n g paradoxical about his betrayal by Judas Iscariot – in three
of the four canonical Gospels, with a kiss. Judas is damned for helping bring about the salvation of mankind. And
Jesus knows all along that he will sell him out. We’ve always known that there was a Gospel of Judas. The Gospel
was in vogue for a few hundred years, then disappeared from history – until last week. This Gospel tells us that
Judas was Jesus’ only true disciple, to whom he imparted secret mystic knowledge, and whom he asked to turn
him in to the Romans, in order to free his spirit from its fleshly prison.
Judas’ betrayal of Jesus has sparked considerable anti-Semitism over the centuries, and the new Gospel may
help Christians see beyond ancient – and historically unfounded - stereotypes .Or it may simply add to our sense
of how inchoate and multifarious early Christianity was. But right now, people are loving the idea that Jesus and
Judas were dear friends who were in it together.

There is no time like the present to look at the future of American dance. So much keeps coming, so much is left
3
behind, and the uncertainty and immense promise of all that lies ahead tell us that the young century is
4 5
witnessing a watershed in American dance history. Candid shots of American artists on the move reveal a wide-
6
open landscape of dance, from classical to modern to postmodern and beyond.
7 8
Each of our dance traditions carries a distinctive flavor, and each demands attention: the living legacies of
9
George Balanchine and Antony Tudor, the ever-surprising genius of Merce Cunningham, the all-American
10 11
exuberance of Paul Taylor, the social commitment of Bill T. Jones and Joe Goode, together with a vibrant new
12
generation of American dance-makers who are responding to the amazing growth of dance companies and their
13
audiences from coast to coast.
14 15
Most of all, the optimism and sheer daring that have long marked American dance are alive and well from New
16 17
York to San Francisco, from Miami to Seattle, and from Houston to our capital in Washington, D.C. They are
18
alive in Mark Morris's cheery iconoclasm, in Lar Lubovitch's invention, in Michael Smuin's jazzy abandon, in
19
Broadway's newfound love of dance, in every daring bit of performance art that tries to redefine what dance is
20
and what it is not. American dancers today represent the finest, most exciting, and most diverse aspects of our
21
country's cultural riches.
22
The phenomenal aspect of dance is that it takes two to give meaning to the phenomenon.
23 24
The meaning of a dance arises not in a vacuum but in public, in real life, in the magical moment when an
25
audience witnesses a performance. What makes American dance unique is not just its distinctive, multicultural
mix of influences, but also the distinctively American mix of its audiences.
26 27
That mix is even more of a melting pot as the new millennium unfolds. And it makes for a uniquely varied,
gripping tale of dance and dancers facing a new era.
28 29
Ours is a constantly changing tradition whose very vitality is what we will bequeath future generations: the
30
cowboys and sailors alongside the magical swans and sugar plums, the dances of political questioning and the
31
dances of pure joy of movement, the selflessness and optimism, the generosity of spirit, the elemental theatrical
excitement that is the promise of each rising curtain.
32 33
American dance stays alive by ensuring that it never remains the same, that it is a living tradition, the American
34
tradition. Enriching that tradition involves not just looking ahead to the next surprise but also looking back with
35
both pride and affection at the giants of American dance who have made the future possible. (…)

With the global warming, mosquitoes are everywhere. And this means that microorganisms will be spread to new
habitats, bringing diseases to new population.
Mosquito-born-malaria, for example, generally appears in humid regions with average temperatures above 61
degrees Fahrenheit. Global warming and the range of 6 to 10 degrees will increase malaria-carrying mosquitoes
on 60 percent of the globe. Climate change is also increasing the range of Aedis aegypti, the species of mosquito
that carries both dengue and yellow fever. Another deadly threat is the resurgence of cholera. (There were 5,000
deaths in the 1991 cholera epidemic in South America.) How many will die next time?

In America, Muslim women are seen as timid creatures, covered from head to toe, who scurry rather than
walk. They have no voices, no rights and no place outside the home. The West’s exposure to Muslim women is
largely based on Islam’s most extreme cases of oppression: Taliban dominated Afghanistan, Wahhabi ruled Saudi
Arabia and post-revolutionary Iran. Under these regimes women were and are ordered to cover themselves. Many
Afghan women are forbidden to attend school, and no Saudi woman is allowed to drive. Yet despite the spread of
ultraconservative versions of Islam over the past few decades, these societies are not the norm in the Muslim
world. In Egypt, female cops patrol the streets. In Jordan, women account for the majority of students in medical
school. In Syria, courtrooms are filled with female lawyers. Women in these countries are to be found in every
profession and expect equal pay.
Jihadists portray Muslim women as ignorant lambs who need to be protected from outside forces, while the
United States considers them helpless victims of a backward society to be saved through military intervention.
Their empowerment is being exploited by men. But Muslim women have grown very, very sensitive about how
they are depicted on either side. Millions of Muslim Arab women still love the societies they are born into,
regardless of jihadist manipulation or American intervention. If reform is to come, they will surely be the ones who
push it forward.

Gang violence grips Brazil State
Attacks are continuing in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo where a wave of coordinated violence since Friday has
left at least 81 people dead.
9 5
Overnight, gangs torched buses , targeted banks and maintained their attacks on police patrols and stations. At
10
least 23 people were killed in the latest fighting , officials said. Authorities say the unrest is being directed from
14 13
inside jail by a criminal gang after hundreds of its members were sent to maximum security prisons.
Correspondents say the violence is an escalation of what many in Sao Paulo are calling a war between the state
authorities and the First Command of the Capital (PCC) criminal faction.
1
Uprisings are said to have been quelled at some 40 jails , but officials are also struggling to restore order in 29.
11
About 120 people are still being held hostage. Unrest has also been reported in some prisons in neighbouring
states, including Mato Grosso do Sul and Parana. Following a meeting with the Brazilian president, Justice
8
Minister Marcio Thomaz Bastos is on his way to Sao Paulo to offer the use of both the army and an elite police
15
unit. Petrol Bombs Heavily armed gangs held up more than 60 buses during a third night of extreme violence in
6 7
Sao Paulo, clearing the passengers off and then setting the vehicles alight. Molotov cocktails were hurled into
several bank branches and across Sao Paulo city, police stations again came under attack by gangs wielding
machine guns, machetes and home-made bombs. There were also several fatal shoot-outs.
On Monday morning, bus terminals and underground stations were closed amid fears of further attacks, making it
18
impossible for many people to get to work. Many worried parents kept their children away from school . The
20
attacks and riots began on Friday after 700 jailed PCC members were transferred to higher-security facilities .
Violence was reported in various parts of Greater Sao Paulo, as well as towns along the coast, including Guaruja,
Santos and Cubatao, and towns in the interior of the state.
4
Despite the violence, the governor of Sao Paulo state , Claudio Lembo, has said local authorities can cope, but
Brazilian newspapers report that the federal government is eager to send troops to restore order.
Mobile Phones A local public safety official told the Associated Press that authorities had been prepared for a
PCC response to the jail transfers but "never imagined it would be so big or ferocious”.
According to authorities, 38 gunmen and 39 police officers and prison guards are among the dead. Those who

the safety of their cells.

In November 2003, the gang attacked more than 50 police stations , killing three police officers and wounding 12.
Those attacks were thought to have been orchestrated by PCC leaders in jail.

The first known use of the cocoa bean to make a spicy (not sweet) chocolate drink dates back to the Mayan
1 32
empire of what is today Southern Mexico and Guatemala. For the Maya , cocoa and the thick ‘chocolatl’ drink
27 28 2
that it produced were a symbol of sanctity, evoking both fertility and prosperity . Mayan priests are the first to
3 12
have made the drink during the classical Mayan period from about AD 250 to 900. The bean was so highly
23
valued that it was used as a form of currency at a fixed market rate – you could get a rabbit for ten beans, a
4
slave cost a hundred and a prostitute went from eight to ten “according to how they agree .”
With the collapse of Mayan civilization, the use of chocolate spread north (probably carried by Mayan tribes) to the
5
Aztec Empire of central Mexico. Here the drink was restricted to the elite of warriors, merchants and priests, who
6
controlled Aztec life. It is interesting that Aztec warriors carried high-energy chocolate on military campaigns and
7
that later chocolate gained its post-World War One popularity after it was used in soldier’s ration kits. Cocoa
29 11
beans continued to be used as a currency, so those who could actually afford to drink chocolate were
8 17 24 18
privileged indeed . The Aztec emperors stored beans as a way of storing wealth and are reported at one
point to have had about 960,000,000 beans in the royal coffers. When chocolate was prepared, it was with great
ceremony, paying careful attention to the foaming process and adding a delicate mixture of spices, honey and
flowers to get a recipe correct.
19
Unlike the Aztec’s gold, chocolate was not immediately to the taste of the barbaric Spaniards who killed any
Amerindians who would not accept the domination of the Spanish crown. They used to say that the awfully-tasting
drink was more fit for pigs than people. But innovation through the adding of sugar transformed chocolate for the
13
sweet European palate and it grew in popularity, particularly with the ladies of the Spanish court. Other
innovations included taking the liquid hot rather than cold and producing it as a tablet that was easily transportable
20 21
and crumbled into a powder from which the chocolate drink could be prepared. For nearly a century chocolate
14
remained a secret of the Spanish aristocracy virtually unknown in the rest of Europe.
9 25
For some 28 centuries, chocolate had been a drink of the elite from Aztec emperors to French courtiers and the
10
English bourgeois . But with the invention of a cocoa press by the Dutch in the late 19th century, which extracted
the cocoa butter out of the beans leaving a powder of cocoa solids, all that changed. A vast new confectionery
industry came into existence. The Cadbury company, which brought the press to England, was soon producing
30 15 26
both powder and candy bars as fast as the machinery would work. This company was quickly joined by
16
others in Britain and in the United States. To this day these and a few other firms from continental Europe, most
31
prominently the gigantic Nestlé corporation based in Switzerland, dominate the growing global chocolate 65
market.

COOKING UP A CARROT
Thanks to some stubborn scientists, agronomists and farmers, Brazil is turning some of the most inhospitable
regions of the tropics into a cornucopia.
Much of the credit goes to the government-run agricultural-research company, Embrapa, whose boldest work to
date has been the handsome Alvorada carrot.
In the steamy tropics, a carrot’s life is short and drab. Those that survive the summer come up knobby (due to a
carrot disease) and tinged green. After experimenting for two decades, Embrapa’s garden-vegetable division
came up with the Alvorada carrot that grows fat and straight, and consistently orange in color. But the Alvorada is
not all good looks. It was built to withstand diseases and pests that prosper in the heat and humidity of the tropics.
And it has 35 percent more carotenoids (a vitamin A precursor) than varieties planted elsewhere in Latin
American.
1
When Embrapa launched the carrot in 2000, scientists thought it would sweep the market. It hasn’t . The Alvorada
is heaper than imported carrots, but far more expensive than the traditional varieties. And to most consumers,
cost is what counts. “Brazilians don’t even know yet what carotene is,” says Jairo Vidal Vieira, Embrapa’s carrot
2
expert. Slowly, he thinks, they’ll come to realize the benefits of eating healthier. “I’ll bet my career on it ,” he says.

Food Fight
The battle heats up between the U.S. and Europe over genetically engineered crops
"Around the world people are taking a closer look at the genetic makeup of what they.re eating . and growing
uneasy with what they see. Over the past decade, genetically modified (GM) food has become an increasingly
common phenomenon as scientists in the U.S. and elsewhere have rewoven the genes of countless fruits and
vegetables, turning everyday crops into uber-crops able to resist frost, withstand herbicides and even produce
their own pesticides. In all, more than 4,500 GM plants have been tested, and at least 40 . including 13 varieties of
corn, 11 varieties of tomatoes and four varieties of soybeans . have cleared government reviews. For biotech
companies such as Monsanto, based in the U.S., and Novartis AG, based in Switzerland, the rise of GM
technology has meant boom times. Sales of GM seeds rose in value from $75 million in 1995 to $1.5 billion last
year, and the crops they produce are turning up not only on produce shelves but also in processed foods from
cookies to potato chips to baby food.
Since the Federal Government sees GM components as mere additives, they require little government oversight.

Early in the morning or late at night, when the waters are at their calmest, you will hear them. Botos, or river
dolphins, are found throughout the Amazon rivers. On Jacques Cousteau’s expedition, this mammal was
described as "pink". In the Amazon tradition it is known as the "red" dolphin, but black and gray botos are also
found in those waters.

Scientists believe the botos moved into the rivers from the ocean. Because of the abundance of food, they
adapted quickly to the environment. Their sleek bodies and echo-location abilities allow them to swim through the
muddy and black waters of the flooded forests.
They are extremely intelligent and attractive creatures. Their mystical nature has made them the protagonist of
many Amazonian legends. Storytellers love to share legends about how the botos saved people from drowning or
from aquatic predators. Some tell about the enchanted boto kingdom found in the depths of the river. Here, in
their cities, is where the botos gather to celebrate and have parties. Many ribeirinhos, people who live in stilt
houses along the river banks, believe that the botos like to party so much that they come to their parties
disguised as men dressed in hats and white clothes. They are so polite and charming that the women fall in love
with them, even claiming unplanned pregnancies to be the result of the attraction.

Pedagogy: Learning Styles
9 10 11
Learning styles could be described as the various ways in which children and adults think and learn. Each of
8 1 12 13
them develops a preferred and consistent set of behaviours or approaches to learning .
The education literature suggests that students who are actively engaged in the learning process will be more likely
2 7
to achieve success. Once students are actively engaged in their own learning process they begin to feel
empowered and their personal achievement and self-direction levels rise.
3
A key to getting and keeping students actively involved in learning lies in understanding learning style
preferences, which can positively or negatively influence a student’s performance. It has also shown that adjusting
4 16 14 17
teaching materials to meet the needs of a variety of learning styles benefits all students. Therefore , learners
18 19 20
should be involved in different activities such as working in laboratories and field work ; they should also be
15
given the opportunity to watch others or develop observations about their own experiences, give them
oportunities to create theories to explain observations and use theories to solve problems and make decisions.
There are probably as many ways to teach as there are to learn. Perhaps the most important thing is to be aware
that people do not all see the world in the same way and to recognize that not everybody is comfortable and
5 21
productive within the same learning style mold . The use of varied, experiential and interactive teaching
6
materials will engage and encourage a wider variety of students.

"Combating Teen Smoking: Research and Policy Strategies”, a new book due out in June, offers findings
6 7
demonstrating that anti-smoking programs can prevent young people from starting to smoke or get them to stop
4 10 2 8
smoking , thus sparing them the wide-ranging health effects associated with the habit.
9 11
The authors recommend various ways to help slow, or even reverse, the recent rise in teen-age smoking.
12
Proven methods that states and communities might use include initiating anti-smoking media campaigns, raising
the price of cigarettes, using computers to develop individualized smoking prevention programs, and increasing
investment in smoking cessation programs for both children and adults.
“We still have a lot to learn about teen tobacco use, including the role of genetic factors affecting moking
3
cessation and the factors influencing teens to avoid trying tobacco. But we know enough about peer and
14 13 15
parental influences and how higher prices reduce teen smoking. That is why we support aggressive anti-
tobacco programs”, says one of the authors.

Questão 29 - (UFRN/2001)
As much as intelligent extraterrestrial life could confound our expectations - the way this composite image is
designed to do - physical and chemical properties are universal, so it is reasonable to expect that any intelligent
life we're likely to encounter will share some basic characteristics with Earth life:
SIZE intelligent life must be complex and multicellular, and scientists believe that cells have an inherent minimum
size, so we don't expect intelligent life to be tiny.
HEAD Light, sound, and odor will exist throughout the universe, so sensory organs are good bets, probably
located near a large, complex brain.
SKELETON An internal skeleton to support and protect vital body parts and a central nervous system for internal
communication may be necessary.
limbs Intelligent beings will almost certainly have appendages for locomotion and toolmaking.
Although aliens could have multiple limbs and eyes, on Earth two eyes and for limbs work well without overtaxing
the brain. That doesn't mean that we should expect to find Hollywood aliens though. "Nature is probably much
more inventive than we are, " says Seth Shostak of the SETI Institute in California.

d) órgãos sensoriais, esqueleto interno e tamanho minúsculo

Cleaning Up City Hall
Brazilians send a powerful message in nationwide municipal elections: Straighten up or get out !
17
Blog do Enem Inglês – Adjetivos: Adjectives - Kinds.
Brazilian voters have given notice that they are mad as hell and are not going to take it anymore. In nationwide
municipal elections that ended in a second round of voting on Oct. 29, they swept hundreds of incumbents out of
4
power and replaced them with candidates who promised to clean up city hall. All in all, it was a heartening -and
5 th th3
different– showing for a country that recently dropped from 45 to 49 on a list of countries most afflicted with
corruption, published by Transparency International, a global anticorruption organization.
The big winner was the leftist Workers Party (P.T.), whose candidates have spearheaded anticorruption efforts in
6 1
a variety of cities and towns, and the P.T.’s biggest prize was the mayor’s residence of São Paulo, Latin
America’s biggest and wealthiest city. P.T. candidate Marta Suplicy, 55, a psychologist who formerly dispensed
sexual advice on TV, beat onetime mayor and ex-governor of São Paulo state Paulo Salim Maluf of the
conservative Brazilian Progressive Party, 58.5% to 41.5%. Her win was due in large part to her promise to “close
the faucets of corruption.” The P.T. also won mayoralties in four other state capitals, representing around 14% of
the national population. Exulted Suplicy : “We have to dismantle the corruption machine.”
It was a sobering outcome for President Fernando Henrique Cardoso’s center-right coalition, since the vote was
seen as a boost for the P.T. for the next presidential contest, in 2002. What is clear, Cardoso admitted, “is that the
7
electorate is looking for candidates with a profound concern for public morality.” The irony is that Cardoso has
11
done a lot to help the trend .
8
In fact, the elections capped an upsurge of intolerance for official venality . In the past 18 months, a Federal
Deputy and a Senator have been expelled from office for malfeasance, along with hundreds of mayors, state
congressmen and city councilors. A new generation of federal prosecutors, an unfettered press and special
2
anticorruption courts have all declared war against thieves in high places . Says Welson Gasparini, president of
10
the Brazilian Association of Municipalities : “This is a sign of new times .”
