GENERAL
Watermelon prefers light, deep, rich in organic matter, well drained and
rich in nutritive elements and organic matter soils, with a pH ranging from
6 to 6,5. The compact soils are susceptible to induce cracks and should
be avoided for this reason.
The growth cycle is about 75 to 80 days. Density varies from 4500 to 9100
plants/ha.
Nitrogen and magnesium deficiencies reduce the fruit-setting. Potassium
improves quality, enhancing the sweetness, calibre, shell life and better
transport withstand. Requirements in nitrogen and potassium are weak at
the early stage.
The water-melon is sensitive to the molybdenum deficiency, particularly on
cold, wet grounds, with acid pH. It is also sensitive to manganese and iron
deficiency. Boron accentuates the anti-bursting strength (fruit splitting) in
dry year.

Notice: Formulae and recommended doses correspond to the plant average needs, cropped on well-ba-
lanced soils. They must be adapted to the soil, the climate, the cropping conditions, the variety, the water
management and the yield target. Fertigation schedule indicate daily fertilizer requirements per ha. In
case of irrigation in time intervals other than daily, the amount of fertilizer to be given has to be increased
proportionally. The base dressing (organic and/or mineral) should be deducted from advised recommen-
dations.
