1 GENERALLY

1.1 SCOPE
a) Specified in this section:

1. Thermal insulation of roof, upper roofs and the like.

b) Related sections:

1. Section 02: Roofing and waterproofing.

1.2 STANDARDS AND CODES OF PRACTICE


a) Unless otherwise specified, all works under the present section shall be executed in
accordance with the requirements and recommendations of the appropriate British
Standards and Codes of Practice, together with all amendments, that are current at the date
of the tender, for materials and workmanship.

1.3 SUBMISSIONS
1.3.1 Submission generally
a) Manufacturers catalogues, test certificate, installation method, material samples and shop
drawings, sample panels and prototypes for all relevant materials and equipments shall be
submitted to the Construction Manager for review or approval.

b) The extent of information or samples required shall be adequate and sufficient to


demonstrate that the proposed system end materials are in compliance with the contract
requirements. However, the Construction Manager can request the contractor to submit any
additional or supplementary information to substantiate the performance of the proposed
system or material.

c) All submissions are to be made in English language.

d) Documents larger than A3 size shall be submitted in 3 copies.

e) No bulk materials and systems ordering work shall proceed prior to the Construction
Manager’s confirmation of no adverse comment on the submitted information, samples,
sample panels or prototypes. It is the contractors sole responsibility to ensure that the
required materials or systems can be ordered according to the contractor’s master program.

f) Where the Construction Manager requires prototypes to be submitted by the Contractor, the
Contractor shall be solely responsible for the consequences of delay resulting from failure to
allow adequate time for the assessment and approval of submissions, or from the rejection
of submissions which do not comply with the Contract documents.

g) No claim for any additional time or cost due to any delayed submission of a satisfactory
system will be entertained.

h) The time required for examination of each submission shall be fifteen (15) working days.
1.3.2 Data submissions
a) Before any bulk materials and systems ordering work commences, obtain and submit in
writing statements from the supplier or suppliers, giving the following unless otherwise
required by the Construction Manager:

1. Particulars of the supplier's experience in the required type of work.

2. Production capacity for material of the required type, sizes and quantity.
3. Lead times for delivery of the material to the site.
4. Technical specifications,
5. Standard installation drawings and details,
6. Recommendations for installation,
7. Test reports certified by an independent testing authority showing compliance with the
criteria of the specified tests / with this specification,
1.3.3 Shop drawings
a) Submit shop drawings of the installation including diagrams, illustration, schedules,
performance charts, and other data prepared by the sub-contractor, supplier or distributor
illustrating some portion of the work.

b) Shop drawings submitted without Contractor’s stamp of approval and certification, and shop
drawings which, in the Construction Manager opinion are incomplete, contain numerous
errors or have not been checked or only checked superficially, will be returned unchecked
by the Construction Manager for resubmission.

c) Drawings rejected by the Construction Manager shall be corrected and resubmitted before
fabrication and shall not constitute a claim for extension of time or extra cost.

d) Shop drawings shall be submitted suitably identified and in orderly sequence to cause no
delay to the works. Drawings submitted shall correspond to the size of the contract drawings
where practicable.

e) Do not commence fabrication until permission to use the relevant shop drawings has been
obtained.
1.3.4 Contractor’s documents
a) Before works commences, obtain and submit in writing statements from the supplier or
suppliers, giving the following, where applicable:

1. Approval of installer: If the installation is not by the manufacturer, and if the


manufacturer's guarantee is conditional on his approval of the installer, the
manufacturer's written approval of the specialist installing firm including a statement that
the proposed installer is experienced in the required type of work.
2. Acceptance of substrate: The installing firm's written statement certifying that the
building structure/substrate is satisfactory for receiving the installation.
1.3.5 Samples
a) Before any bulk materials and systems ordering work commences, submit not less than
three samples of the following:

1. All materials and products to be used in the works.

b) Sample Sizes:
1. Sheet products: minimum 0.25 m2 (500x500mm) per sample.
2. Linear products: minimum 1000mm long.
3. Granular or liquid products: minimum 0.5 L.

c) Label each sample for identification, giving the brand name and product name,
manufacturer's code reference, date of manufacture, and the like.

d) Items used in the works shall be in accordance with an approved sample, or within a range
defined by approved samples, as determined by the Construction Manager, otherwise such
items shall be liable to rejection.

e) Keep approved samples in good condition on the site until Practical Completion.

1.4 QUALITY
1.4.1 Quality assurance - quality control
a) During the construction phase, the Contractor shall provide a written certification to the
Construction Manager that they have completed a quality assurance check on the
specifications and drawings.

b) Before commencement of the works, submit to the Construction Manager for approval a
written description of each quality management system, with specific reference to the
following:
1. the relevant standard;
2. where the standard provides for classification levels, the level adopted;
3. the scope and field of application;
4. the personnel involved and their responsibilities;
5. Inspection Test Plans (ITPs)
6. the various procedures required by the standard including those for management
review, contract review, design and document control, process control, inspection and
testing, etc.;
7. other relevant information.
1.4.2 Inspection
a) Give sufficient notice to the Construction manager so that inspection may be made of the
works at the following times:
1. Substrates prior to laying insulation system.
2. Insulation system prior to covering.

b) Where works are to be carried out in stage or progressively throughout the project have the
above inspections for each stage or area.

c) Minimum notice required: 3 working days.

1.5 GUARANTEE
a) The contractor shall submit a written guarantee for the materials, workmanship and
performance of the proposed system(s) to the Construction Manager for review.

b) The guarantee shall warrant that the entice system(s) including materials, structure,
installation, workmanship and performance will be in proper and normal function in
accordance with the contract requirements for a period of not less than ten (10) years from
the date of practical completion of the main contract works as certified by the Construction
Manager.

c) The guarantee shall also warrant that any defective materials, structure, construction,
workmanship revealed during the guarantee period shall be made good at the contractors
own expense to the satisfaction of the Construction Manager.

d) No bulk materials and systems ordering work shall proceed prior to the Construction
Managers confirmation of no adverse comment on the submitted guarantee content and
format.

e) It is the contractor’s sole responsibility to ensure that the required materials or systems can
be ordered according to the contractors master program.

f) No claim for any additional time or cost due to any delayed submission of a satisfactory
guarantee will be entertained.

g) Release of the retention upon practical completion is subject to the presentation of a duly
executed guarantee.

1.6 SPARE
Not required

2 MATERIAL
a) the roof insulation system for flat roof top roof / upper roof shall be rigid insulation.

a) Rigid insulation in block form of 50mm thick, in compliance with ASTM C552 or the
equivalent international standard, shall be supplied to the required performance of:

1. no more than 0.05 w/mK thermal conductivity at 10°C mean temperature,


2. 35 kg/m3 minimum density,
3. 0.5 N/mm2 minimum compressive strength average for standard material, and
4. 75°C minimum service temperature.

b) Unless otherwise specified, anyone of the following systems or products shall be proposed
by the contractor for this project. However, the contractor can submit an equivalent or equal
system or product to the Construction Manager for approval as an alternative to the
followings.

Rigid Insulation

1. FOAMGLAS cellular glass,


2. STYRODUR extruded polystyrene rigid foam from BASF,
3. ROCKWOL hardrock roofing boards,
4. ROOFMATE insulation boards.

c) No claim for any additional cost or time for the use of any alternative as proposed by the
contractor will be entertained by the Construction Manager. Due allowance shall be made
by the contractor to ensure all necessary ordering and delivery works will be carried out in
accordance with the contractors master program.

Any cost saving as a result of the Construction Manager’s approval for any alternative
system or product shall be adjusted according to the contract conditions.

3 WORKMANSHIP

3.1 RIGID INSULATION


a) The insulation block shall be laid strictly in accordance with the manufacturer’s
specifications and recommendations.

b) A layer of rigid insulation shall be laid dry on top of the waterproofing or on top of the
protection sheet board which may be required by the waterproofing system to protect the
waterproofing.

c) After placement of the rigid insulation, a layer of protection fabric sheeting shall be placed
over the insulation with all edges lapped 150 mm.

d) A minimum 50 mm thick cement sand screed shall be completed on top of the rigid
insulation before placing of any precast concrete tiles, pavers or other finishes.
