Experiment No.1
Power Supply Filters

Procedures:
1. Create a power supply circuit consisting of a transformer, diode and capacitor
input filters. Ise the following circuit components:
 Input voltage: 120 V rms 60 Hz
 Power Transformer with 10:1 turn ratio
 Half-waver rectifier circuit using 1N4001
 10kΩ load resistor
 1µF capacitor input filter

2. Measure the AC and DC output voltage and view the output wave form using an
oscilloscope. What can you say about the result?
Industrial Electronics Laboratory GROUP III
ECE 4-1

AC Output Voltage: 3.73 V

DC Output Voltage: 10.052 V

The half-wave rectifier inefficiently rectifies the dc because of the use of

only one diode which causes more variations on the output voltage creating high
amount of ripples.

3. Replace the half- wave rectifier with the bride full-wave rectifier and repeat step
2.
Industrial Electronics Laboratory GROUP III
ECE 4-1

AC Output Voltage: 2.086V

DC Output Voltage: 12.832V

Industrial Electronics Laboratory GROUP III
ECE 4-1

The full-wave rectifiers has lesser ripples that the half-wave rectifier.
Which produces a smoother output waveform, also we noticed the dc output
voltage value had increased.

4. Increase the capacitance of the filter capacitor to 10µF and repeat step 2

AC Output Voltage: 285.875 mV

Industrial Electronics Laboratory GROUP III
ECE 4-1

DC Output Voltage: 15.304 V

After increasing the capacitance of the filter in the full-wave rectifier circuit,
it had caused only little variations and more efficiently rectified DC almost
producing a virtually perfect line.

5. Decrease the capacitance of the filter capacitor back to 1µf and add 1mH
inductor in series to form an LC choke input filter and repeat step 2.
Industrial Electronics Laboratory GROUP III
ECE 4-1

AC Output Voltage: 2.096 V

DC Output Voltage: 12.84 V

The ripples get filtered through choke coil, and even more ripples are
being removed by the capacitor, producing small amount of ripples in a
waveform.
Industrial Electronics Laboratory GROUP III
ECE 4-1
6. Add another 1µf capacitor to form an LC capacitor input filter and repeat step 2.

AC Output Voltage: 1.349 V

DC Output Voltage: 14.107 V

Industrial Electronics Laboratory GROUP III
ECE 4-1

When another capacitor is added to the circuit it forms not one of the pi-style type
which provides a high amount of filtered voltage. This type of circuit is more efficient
because it removes most of the ripples in the output waveform.

7. Replace the inductor by 100Ω resistor and repeat step 2

AC Output Voltage: 1.263 V

When the inductor is replaced by the 100 ohm resistor there is no change in the
variation of the waveform but the value of a DC voltage decreased.
Industrial Electronics Laboratory GROUP III
ECE 4-1

DC Output Voltage: 13.839 V

8. Tabulate all the results and draw conclusions

Conclusions:

 A half-wave rectifier with a single capacitor doesn’t much converts the AC

into DC and filters, which causes variations on the output voltage creating
high amount of ripples.
 A full-wave rectifier converts both half-cycles of the AC voltage waveform
to a continuous series of voltage pulses so the load doesn’t “pulsate”
much
 Increasing or adding capacitors can smooth out or filter the ripples present
in the rectified DC, and the inductors as well can be used.
 A full wave rectifier circuit with RC causes an output voltage drop due to
its resistance.
